Seth is growing up and making better decisions. Brandon has fallen into a writer's trap of alternating story lines between two primary characters. And finally, the series became so-so.

All that said, Grip of the Shadow Plague was another good read from the Fablehaven series for young adult readers and should keep their interest. Both my wife and I agree that this will start to appeal more to boys with Seth's new-found "wisdom" (and I use quotes because he isn't there yet, but well o...more

I think I like this book the best so far out of the series. It felt more complete and whole somehow. I assume it is at least partly because Brandon is becoming a better writer. But I think it also has to do with an improved plot structure and more intense, realistic conflict.

Setting: Still mostly at Fablehaven, but with explorations of even more of the area. Also, Kendra does get to go to a meeting of a secret society (held in a house like a castle) and then to another preserve in Arizona. S...more

Brandon Mull has delivered more of the same with book three of this series, which is just what we wanted.

The plot moved along at a good clip, keeping us involved and engaged.

The characters were real and true to their previous actions. It was a lot of fun to discover along with the kids their unique talents and abilities.

Reading aloud to Emily, I had to pause and laugh quite a few times at the interplay between Seth and Ken...more

This book starts out about a month after Volume 2 ends. Kendra and Seth, the hero and heroine, are still visiting their grandparents and reeling from the betrayal of Vanessa and her shocking message that the man they have all trusted is in fact a traitor to them all. Of course the small group sheltered at Fablehaven bands together to fight the latest foe and to find out the truth about the elusive Sphinx. I was excited to read this book, but maybe I was too excited.

Though I enjoyed the story...more

This is a book I will like more in the future as I think back on it than I do right now having just finished it. The storyline was fine, but the execution of it fell flat for me. I was never completely drawn into the story until about the last hundred pages. Most of this was due to the splitting of the storyline with Kendra on a mission at Lost Mesa in Arizona while Seth stayed at Fablehaven and had adventures there. It felt very choppy as we jumped back and forth between the two storylines. ...more

A page turner like the second book of this series. It was very difficult for me to put this one down as you go from one adventure to the next. There seems to be no end to Brandon Mull's imagination and creativity. I love the "Lost Mesa" adventure as well as the mystery of the "Shadow Plague". Great characters, I loved getting to know the infamous Patton.

There were a few things that I wanted to be different in the book (I'm picky, I know). The way you are left with the Sph...more

Unlike the previous two books in the series, this one pulled me in from chapter 1. I started it Thursday night and had a hard time putting it down until I finished on Saturday. It was a fun book to read.

Having said that, I think that overall I enjoyed the 2nd book more. I felt like the ending of this book was entirely too predictable. Basically, I could have outlined most of what was going to happen in the last 50 pages or so before reading it. There are only a few plot twists, and none...more

Within weeks of finishing the summer vacation Kendra and Seth find themselves once again thrown into the battle between good and evil. The fate of Fablehaven hangs in the balance as a mysterious shadow plague begins to spread through the magical preserve. The once plentiful supply of light creatures are being transformed into creatures of darkness with one purpose: swell the darkness and stop everyone else at all costs. Stakes are raised as Kendra and Seth do not know who is friend and who is...more

I COULDN'T PUT IT DOWN!!!! Brandon Mull is my new favorite author. I loved the first two books in the series, but he outdid himself with this one. What a fabulous storyteller! I was seriously nervous throughout much of the book, just anticipating what was going to happen. I found myself so caught up in the story that I had to consciously make myself slow down to grasp it all better. He even works in the cutest little love story; NOT a little tween thing that really gets annoying among authors th...more

Brandon Mull has done it YET again! (I love this author) The third installment of the Fablehaven series. It just keeps getting better.

Kendra is gone from Fablehaven for alot of the book with Warren on a mission where her abilities as being fairykind come in handy. There is...a boy? Yes, Gavin. We love Gavin. Dragon slayer, expert at using crap weapons to defeat people, what is NOT to love about Gavin? Vanessa is here as is the Sphinx who may/may not be the world's biggest two faced person ne...more

YAY!!! It's finally here. Actually it came on the 22nd through the mail, but I gave it to Carl for his B-day so he didn't open it until the 27th. And so, since he is still reading the Dark Materials Trilogy. he told me I could read this before him. Really, he's mine ladies, I found him first!

Whew, just finished the book last night. Of course they were not able to wrap everything up in this one book, so now I have to wait for the next one. Well, at least it has a title already, so it can...more

I've said this before, but Brandon Mull has the most creative imagination! I especially love how through all the action and creativity, there are real lessons to learn about morals and values. Evil and darkness are "contagious" in real life too! I really connect with Kendra - I understood especially when she thought that every victory or defeat is always followed by new worries and new problems. My favorite part though, has to be the love story between Patton and Lena. In this boo...more

I absolutely loved this book from beginning to end. Fablehaven is once again in trouble, and the whole crew pulls together to save it. With suspicions that one of their allies is their greatest enemy, everyone is on alert that things may not be what they seem. When the Knights of Dawn are called to an emergency meeting Kendra is informed that she should also go. On high alert, Warren, Kendra and Tanu go to the meeting to find that Kendra is needed immediately for a mission to recover another ar...more

We've just really liked this series. The books are a lot of fun, exciting, creative, visual, and I feel like they bring up really great discussion topics with the kids. We get to talk about tricky things like Do bad creatures need to be destroyed, or do they play a necessary part in an environment. That can go from the reintroduction of predator species to free speech discussions. We talk about rules and when you might have to break them and consequences. We talk about strengths and weaknes...more

Again- this book was just as entertaining..no more entertaining than the other books in the series. Im in love with the writer's knack for engaging you personally into the story. I felt like I was actually there and for the first time probably ever, I almost cried during a part in the book. If you are into fantasy-you'll love it. If you aren't into fantasy, you'll at least like it just for the fact that it isn't like you are totally in a different world like in other fantasy novels. You can stil...more

I was fortunate enough to receive this book before it's release date and devoured it in one night. Readers new to the series would enjoy it without feeling lost by not having read the first two (but I wager it will make new readers want to read the first two books after finishing this one) and the story line was fresh and fascinating for readers who have enjoyed the exploits of Kendra and Seth from the first two books.

It's not a spoiler to say the author decided in this book to have "mi...more

Wow! This series is on a roll. I was on the waiting list for about 4 months for this one. This is one of my favorite 3 or 4 young adult series. It's right up there with Harry Potter, The Bartimaeus Trilogy, and...not much else up this high. Maybe Gregor the Overlander...

The characters are believable, there's always action but it is fresh each time, the plot twists and suspense are awesome, it's incredibly creative--I just love this series! The story slowly expands each book in a neat wa...more

This series, in my opinion, has the most potential to follow Harry Potter. They aren't the same, but in the fantasy category I think these books will do really well. I enjoyed it tremendously. A little dark, some death, suspenseful, witty, and well written.

I've heard complaints that he uses big words, so it isn't written appropriately for the age group, but I think the big words will expand vocabularies, so people should just stop complaining. Buy a dictionary if that's the case. Ok, ...more
