OK, first, I'm not interested in crooked cops and the mob as the main vehicles for a story line. Some people are; not me. So that was strike one. However, there were other things about this book that I really didn't like, and I found this very surprising given the rave reviews (in the front of the book - OK, I should have been suspicious) from people whose writing I greatly admire (e.g. George Pelacanos).

For one, I kept checking to see if I had the "abridged" edition (I didn't) since the plot a...more

Soul Patch, by reed Farrel Coleman, A-minus, narrated by Andy Caploe, produced by Audible Inc., downloaded from audible.com.

The 4th in the Moe Prager series. In this one, the ex-cop, now wine shop owner of yet a third wine shop, is approached by his old friend from police days, Larry MacDonald, now chief of detectives. Larry seems very worried, asks for Moe’s help, and gives him a tape. Moe refuses to help him and that’s the end of his second longest friendship with a policeman. He listens to th...more

This was my second Reed Coleman novel. I thought I was re-reading the first one I'd read, because Coleman's character Moe Prager was still wrapped around the axle about his wife's missing brother and her evil politician father, themes which I thought were fully explored and settled in the other novel I'd read. If I were less charitible, I'd accuse Reed Coleman his previous work. By the time I got to Coleman's description of a high-rise apartment complex as a "pile of puss" (who doesn't know puss...more

*** Ex-policeman, now PI and wine-shop owner Moe Prager is approached by Larry MacDonald, a brother cop who is now NYPD Chief of Detectives. Larry gives Moe an unauthorized tape of an interrogation where a snitch claims he has information about the murder of D Rex, a major drug dealer in the ‘70s. Larry wants Moe to investigate as that information cou...more

Moe Prager, a former cop, is asked to investigate the suicide of an old friend and associate, the chief of detectives. The action takes place mostly in Coney Island, Brooklyn NY.

The usual dysfunctional marriage and a bit too much reminiscence about prior cases. The writing is spare, with a somewhat convoluted plot. Though, in the end, I'm interested in reading more of this series.

Detective fiction has a devastatingly charming new (to me) hero in Moe Praeger. Ex-cop and wine shop owner in NY. Killer story and can't wait to read more Moe.
Dave
A beautifully written noir detective mystery set in Brooklyn. Part of Farrel's award-winning Moe Prager series. Delightfully dark and gritty.

Coleman is an excellent writer: his characters are believable, more importantly likeable. Perfect movie material.

Like all moe books this is another bitter-sweet ending.Finding out the real truth will someday be his downfall.

Another good mystery by Reed Farrel Coleman. The 4th in his "Moe Prager" series. It would help, if you've read the other books first.
Alex Connelly
Awful book. Would never recommend this author to anyone.

Further development of moe praeger. Interesting twist at the end
Karen
Wonderful twisty plot.

GOOD TALE and intrigue in Coney Island. Did not see the twist at the rnd coming. An excellent short Halloween story at the end of the book!! My New York / MEGABUS read today!

Very excellent obscure mystery. Woe the mainstream

I like characters like Moe who has both character strengths and weaknesses. Here, he is tempted with infidelity, as he is in a part of his life and marriage that is as flat as Nebraska.
As I work my way through the Moe Prager books, I wonder if people who aren't at all familiar with Coney Island or Brooklyn miss out on or just get anoyed at RFC's use of some of the spcifics of the area (L.I.E.).

If I hadn't read Coleman's "Walking the Perfect Square" and "Redemption Street", maybe this book would have seemed better. This one included one murder after the other with no soul in it all. And, to top it off, the author pulls a dirty trick at the end, throwing in one last death to pull a rug out from under readers looking for an answer to one of the mysteries.

Moe Prager is an ex-New York cop. A freak fall wrecked his knee and ended his career. After an old friend and current chief of detectives "allegedly" commits suicide, Moe finds himself back out on the streets. If you like dark noir, if you like crooked cops and drug addicts, you will like this trip down the dark streets of Coney Island.

This series just gets better and better. This is both the darkest of the lot (so far) and even more character driven than the others. At the same time, Coleman's fashioned a really good mystery, one that plays utterly fair with the reader without being at all obvious. First rate.
Ed
Well-told, complex, and top-notch gumshoe tale set in NYC. An affable, tenacious sort, Moe Prager has some echoes of the late Arthur Lyons' excellent P.I. Jacob Asch on the West Coast. Enjoyable and intriguing P.I. series.
Jennifer
Love this author. Sometimes a bit too circuitous and belaboring in exposition, but makes up for it in his heartfelt characterizations.
Linda
This is a great detective mystery! I love Coleman's style - he's a fantastic story-teller. Can't wait to read the next Moe Prager story.
Minde
Good detective mystery with a pulse on being a cop. A fast read. As good as Michael Connelly's Harry Bosch!
Robin
I am a HUGE fan of the Moe Prager series and this was another good one!!!
