I hadn't read a Patterson in a while when I picked this up and it immediately brought back all of the reasons that I like his books.
After a bit of a let-down for me with 4th of July, the Women's Murder Club is back in fine form. Patterson's characters are all likeable and easy to root for. The writing style is what I would call very comfortable and the storyline moves along at the usual Patterson frenetic pace. Once I start, I usually don't want to put one of his books down and The 5th Horseman...more

Since so many others have outlined the general plot of this story (huge lawsuit against a hospital; suspicious deaths that may or may not have been committed by a doctor) I'll simply leave a brief comment.
Although the story isn't all that complicated, it was still a quick, enjoyable read--and the ending was one I didn't see coming. Please be aware, though, that THE 5TH HORSEMAN is NOT an Alex Cross novel, which seemed to be one reviewer's complaint. This is the story of Lindsay Boxer, SFPD Lieu...more

This book is AMAZING,QUICK,& EASY like some of the things in the world. The time and place the author choose was in the 21st century, usually happening around afternoon, evening time. This setting is important to the story because the murders happened around that time. The author moved the plot sporadically but not too dramatically, towards the end of the book the author rushed through a bit. Yet, the book was gripping and fast-paced enough to hold the readers attention, its a book that can...more
James Patterson is one of my favorite authors, and I wait for his next book to come out in paperback. This is the fifth book in the Woman's Murder Club series. It is just as page turning as the other four and I am waiting to go shopping to pick up the 6th one. Great murder mystery. Most of the characters are professional women; One is a cop, one a lawyer, a newpaper writer and a medical examiner. The same characters are throughout the series. It feels like you are catching up with friends when y...more
James Patterson is a publisher's dream. He produces two hugely popular mystery/thriller series that routinely hit the best seller lists. He even makes appearances on Castle.
5th Horsman is the fifth (how appropriate) installment in his Women's Murder Club series. It finds our four female protagonists dealing with three concurrent cases; a hospital malpractice suit, a murder spree in the same hospital and a series of deaths of young escorts.
And that is the problem with this book. There is too much...more

I am reviewing the novel The 5th Horseman by James Patterson et al which is an excellent thriller & which I bought from a secondhand bookstore. This book is part of the Women's Murder Club series which was the most successful thriller series of the last 10 years before it exceeded a decade. At the end of the book someone explains the title, the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse are various things like famine & the 5th one is man and the potential for all the wrong doing he can achieve. The pl...more
I find these books entertaining even though I don't think they're particularly good. As a native San Franciscan I often find myslf wondering if James Patterson has EVER been to San Francisco because he has no clue about the weather. Fall isn't cold--It's the best weather of the year in the city. In the third(?) book of the series there are more thunderstorms than I ever experienced in 23 years of living in the Bay Area. Patterson also doesn't know that the airport is SFO and not San Francisco In...more

Lindsay, Claire, Cindy, and Yuki are back in a drama that starts with patients dying in the hospital at an alarming rate and continues with young escorts being murdered, dressed up and left in fancy cars to be found. Right from the beginning it turns personal, when Yuki’s mother is admitted into the hospital that is being sued for malpractice and becomes one of the victims of a hospital murderer. If you are already scared of going to the hospital, this book will not help you.

Most of the stories in the Women's Murder Club series have involved two separate plotlines - for instance, the last book, 4th of July, had one plotline focused on Lindsay Boxer's civil trial and one plotline focused on her helping the local law enforcement solve a series of murders while housesitting for her sister. The two plotlines in this book are connected - Yuki and Cindy are following the civil trial of a doctor at a local hospital who has had 20 or so patients die from hospital errors whi...more
These books always have a twist at the end. Just when you thing the crime is solved, there's something else. I think that's what I like about these. That little extra at the end.
The setting for the main crime in this one is a hospital. People are dying who shouldn't. The question is why. Crimes in hospitals are probably the most frightening because we're so helpless there, depending upon the knowledge and competance of over worked staff. Would we know if the wrong medications or doses were admi...more

Like the other books in the series, The 5th Horseman was a book I just could not put down once I had gotten into it. The one thing I have a hard time with in James Patterson's books is that there tend to be more than one case presented in the books. For example, in this book, there were two cases, one case dealing with dead escorts and the other dealing with the hospital murders mentioned in the synopsis above. Nowhere in the synopsis does it mention that Lindsay is dealing with the Show Girl ca...more
Wow! I've just read a five-star novel. What a ride from start to finish. This is what I read Patterson for. This is the best JP I've read since "Honeymoon." Great plot twists. One of the mysteries doesn't even get solved until the "Epilogue". This makes me want to take back what I said about "4th of July."
The courtroom scene with Dr. Garza (Chapters 70 - 72) is the best I've ever read. The tight sequence of chapters is absolutely perfect. This scene is right up there with the courtroom scene...more

When people start mysteriously dying at the Memorial Hospital, despite appearing to be quite healthy, Lindsay Boxer and the Women’s Murder Club aim to get to the bottom of it. The hospital seems content to cover things up and save their reputation, but Lieutenant Boxer won’t let them get away with that. The hunt is on and they won’t back down until they find the killer responsible for these deaths.

The book is fast paced with a gripping, fun and yet disappointing plot. There were a few twists to keep you going but most of them were anticipated. There were two different cases – one involving mysterious deaths in a hospital and another involving the gruesome death of beautiful call girls. The book would have done better if the focus was on either one of the cases as it would have assured us a better quality mystery. Also apparent was the missing motive behind the case which left me searching...more
A very entertaining read.
I wasn't happy with Mr.Patterson's Step on a Crack novel, nor his 6th Target, so for this novel I invested my money the old fashion way and put my name on the hold list at the library. I'm glad I did.
If you haven't already known that this novel is one of Patterson's Women's Murder Club series, and the story introduces the latest member, Yuki Castellano. Yuki's mother has a mild stroke and while she is recovering in hospital, she suddenly dies at a hospital. Well it turns...more

I thought this book was just okay. It was easy to read, quick and the plots seemed to be a bit far fetched. I suppose as a nurse I was really bothered by some of the arguments in the trial. There are more than 2 checks for drug administration, not just room and bed number. A nurse must verify that you are giving the drug to the right person by checking the name band. Then the argument that it takes awhile after discharge for a nurse to know a patient has gone home is preposterous. It is the nurs...more

Lindsay Boxer's life seems to be filled with the unsure. Her relationship with Joe, the assistant Secretary of Home Security, is reaching a new level of feelings, but she is not sure it can survive the cross-country relationship with him in Waschington,D.C., and her in San Francisco.
She is also finally settling into being in charge of Homicide at the police department. She was thrilled with the promotion, but she really misses being able to be right on the street doing the investigations herself...more

The members of the Women's Murder Club face an unspeakable menace in the most suspenseful hospital drama since Coma. Lieutenant Lindsay Boxer is shopping with the newest member of the Women's Murder Club, lawyer Yuki Castellano, and Yuki's mother, Keiko, when suddenly Keiko collapses. She's rushed to San Francisco Medical Center where her condition stabilizes. Yet days later, the hospital calls Yuki with devastating news. Keiko was given the wrong medication and it brought on a fatal heart attac...more

This book was much better written than the 4th - better dialogue and story. Lieutenant Lindsay Boxer is involved in two different serial cases this time. The first is young girls turning up dressed in expensive designer clothes and laid to rest in fancy expensive cars. The second is people dying in San Francisco's Municipal Hospital. Their eyes are covered with caduceus buttons (serpents around a winged staff, symbol of the medical profession). These patients were well on the road to recovery, t...more
This is so far, my personal favorite in the Women's Murder Club series. This time, there is TWO cases to solve instead of the usual one. Case number one involves mysterious deaths in the hospital. Who is killing almost perfectly healthy people by overdosing them with the wrong medications? Case number two pertains to the pre meditated murders and rapes of female escorts. Suffice it to say, homicide inspector Lindsay keeps pretty busy and readers will find themselves anxious to find out the concl...more
As always a very fast-paced novel - a quick read. Enjoyed this as always. Number 5 in the series.

This one was pretty good. The two stories didn't make that much sense since they weren't tied together. There were a lot of red herrings at the hospital. I was a little confused at the end as to why this one killed that one, and all the double crossing and not being what you think they are. I still want more of the "women" of the series name. It seems like each one of them has a story in a different book and things are really bad for them. I like it when they are all in the story and they work t...more
James Patterson and Maxine Paetro are an explosive tandem. The 5th Horseman deserves all the praises and acclaims. This novel is divided into two stories, two separate incidents not related with each other and the women's murder club is working full force. The authors tap into medical malpractice that goes to court and would leave readers shocked at the events. Another angle is the mysterious killing of girls and how they're made to look like mannequins. The suspense never stops and the plot is t...more
I wish I could've given this book 4 or even 5 stars, but the ending just ruined it all for me. There were 3 different story lines to follow. The first was about a hospital being sued by families who had lost loved ones due to medical error. The second was about a deadly duo killing young ladies and leaving them in luxury cars. And the third, the most interesting I thought, was about a a character named the Night Walker who kills patients on the road to recovery and leaves buttons on their eyes....more
I feel like this book is a little all over the place. There are a lot of story lines, multiple unconnected cases and a lot of sub plots all happening together. One of the cases gets solved early and feels like it was a weird filler plotline. The is a subplot involving one of the murder club which was predictable from the start. The main trail that is the focus of the book, sort of, is mostly boring with a twist that I believe is supposed to be a surprise but was set up so far in advance it was h...more
This 5th installment of the Women's Murder Club series does not disappoint. As with 4th of July, much of the story involves a court case, this one involving a suit against a hospital for gross negligence. The hospital asserts that they are not at fault, that a series of mistakes are to blame and that there is a big difference between human error and neglect. The readers are clued in early, well before the detectives catch on, that this series of deaths is anything but accidental. Meanwhile, Lind...more
