Early one morning, a little bear found a little box. He looked inside. Then he exclaimed,

“Why, it’s the greatest thing ever! Mouse will love this.”

Bear’s friends aren’t so sure of his newfound treasure, however. “That’s not so great,” says Monkey. “I’ve seen those before,” says Owl. And by the time Bear finds Mouse, his own doubts have grown. But Mouse has the last say whe...more

Foley, Greg. "Thank you Bear," Viking, 2007, unnumbered pages. Beginning reader.

Description: Bear has something in a box that he wants to give to Mouse. Other animals are not impressed. Later we find out that the box is empty, and Mouse thinks it's perfect for crawling up inside.

Review: This picture book/easy reader uses large text, a simple, yet expressive story line and animal characters to teach reading skills to first and second graders. The text itself is large enough for untrained eye mus...more

I recently read Don't Worry Bear and saw that this book was the first published bear book, and I definitely wanted to read it; I’m so glad I did, and I’ll probably read any other “Bear” books by this author-illustrator.

This is a gentle and sweet story with very young child friendly illustrations. I loved it. The pictures are so simple and so good; they perfectly fit the story.

Bear is wonderful, as is mouse. This is a lovely friendship story and also a terrific story about imagination. Kids also...more

Everything from the simple and sweet story to the simple and sweet illustrations captivated me from the beginning and warmed my heart! I love words and illustrations that can use so little and yet convey so much!

Bear wants to give Mouse an empty box, (he thinks it will be the perfect present for Mouse. So happy to have found such a wonderful gift, Bear shares his idea with other animals, but they don't seem to think it's such a great gift. And, after a while, Bear begins to wonder if maybe he wa...more

From the book: "Sometimes a box is just a box. Sometimes it is much much more. That is what Bear thinks. But not everyone agrees. Until Bear finds someone who sees it differently. Sometimes finding a friend who sees things as you do is the greatest gift of all."

I really like this book. The story is simple, yet interesting for a little one. The illustrations are simple and adorable. This is a good book for reading together and for discussion about friendship, gift-giving, and doing what is import...more

Thank you bear is about a bear that finds a small box and decides it’s the perfect gift for his friend mouse. On Bears way to find his friend Mouse, he runs into some other friends and shows them the box. None of his other friends think the box is that great and Bear starts to get sad thinking that the box really isn’t that great of a gift. Then Mouse finds Bear sitting on the ground with the box and tells Bear that the box is the greatest gift. This book gives a story on true friendship and sho...more

3/18/10 As cute as the concept is for this book, it's a hard one to read to get the children involved. I suppose I could have had them guess the animals on each page, but I had done that with the previous book and I think they would have tired of it. The simplicity of the pictures caught their attention, though.

3/25/10 Again, the pictures caught the attention of the downtown groups, but the story itself was kind of "eh." I did start having the kids point out things like the squirrel's tail and s...more

Bear finds something he thinks is wonderful, until he faces the criticism of others, then he is not so sure. All is well when his good friend mouse thinks it is absolutely perfect. This was simple and repetitive enough that my 2 year old enjoyed it and yet my 4 year old could relate to the themes as well. I read it as many times as possible before we had to return it to the library as I know I will refer back to the story when my son faces discouragement.

This is a really cute story of a bear that finds a box and thinks one of his friends (mouse) will love it. Along the way to mouse all of his other friends seem less impressed with the box and tell him not to give it to mouse, but in the end it is just right. I wasn't sure what the moral was exactly. Don't let other people's criticism get you down? One man's trash is another mans treasure? Regardless, it would be great for a friend's storytime.

Did you ever think something was so great, just to have people rain all over your parade? Well, bear has found something he really wants to share, but everyone is rather negative toward something he thinks is truly special. Bear just has to find the right someone to share his special item with!

A great book and a great read aloud for the PreK group. Especially with my kids with disabilities!

Bear hears lots of criticism about his gift, and he starts to feel like maybe he didn't chose the right gift for his friend. In the end, the gift was just what his friend had always wanted. This simple story is a wonderful way to teach children how to show true appreciation. One of my absolute favorite children's books.

Awww, what a sweet and fun story. Bear finds a box and decides to give it to Mouse. Along the way, all of his friends make disparaging remarks about the box. It turns out the Mouse is delighted with the gift. A great book for the pre-reading set to show how to be sensitive and the power of a simple thank you.

Read this to Bella at the bookstore today and it's now on my buy list. Bear finds a box that he decides would be the perfect gift for his friend, Mouse. All the other animals criticize it and make bear doubt himself, but as soon as Mouse sees it, he agrees that it's perfect. I bet lots of kids can relate.
Melissa
Predictable, but just right for 2 and 3 year olds to start testing their comprehension skills. Lots of opportunities for good open-ended questions about what is in the box, what the animals are feeling, what makes a good present, all that stuff. Good length for toddler storytime.

TOO CUTE! A little bear finds a box and wants to give it to his friend mouse. But as he travels to find mouse, all the other animals put down his amazing box. He's worried mouse won't like it.

Very sweet, nice big pictures, going to try it out in storytime!

Bear finds a box and thinks it's the greatest thing he ever found but the other animals think otherwise except for his friend Mouse.
Greg E. Foley sure knows how to capture the reader's imagination and curiosity with another simple tale of friendship and giving.

I enjoyed reading this story as it kept me engaged to see what was inside bear's little box. I think children would also be engaged. Hence, this provides a great opportunity for students to make wonderful predictions. It also teaches children to be appreciative.

Part mystery, part fable, this deceptively simple story of true friendship is perfect for the very youngest reader. It is sure to tug at your heart.

It is so important for young children to learn that their opinion counts just as much as anyone else's.

I didn't get a chance to use this in my bear story time so may change my rating after I use it with a group.

A simple story of a bear who finds a gift for his friend. Other animals keep criticizing it, but mouse declares, "It's the greatest thing ever."

An adorable little bear has a gift for a friend. A simple gift that no one else appreciates except that special friend. A thoughtful little bear.

I love the coloring in the book - the matching full page color with the animals.
Amy
Oh, the joy that is in this book -- bear finds a special thing and only needs a friend who will appreciate it was much as he does. You'll root for him, you'll see your friends and acquaintances in his, and feel your heart warmed.
Marilyn
Bear finds a little box. He's so excited to show it to Mouse. Every animal on the way to Mouse thinks it's less than amazing. Bear doubts himself. Mouse loves it as much as Bear. Triumph ;). Fun!
Betty Kim
This is a cute story to teach students that we need to be thankful for all kind even though it is a small think. Even though the little box did not helpful for other animals, it provided a house to a mouse.
Jodie
Easy to read story great for very young readers due to the simple text and the simple illustrations. The story is very simple, but so much for the reader to see with the bear exploring the box.
Matt
Elegantly written and illustrated, this small book unpacks a very big idea: namely, that true compassion and friendship involve imagining the needs of another person.
Sandybear76
I need this book and the other two by this author for preschool classes in the library. Cute, short, easy words, easy pictures, simple concepts.
Steph
Very simple book with a very simple and sweet message. (Actually, I think there is more than one message that can be taken from this book).
Katie
This is cute, with a sweet ending. For some reason, none of Foley's other "Bear" books are doing it for me the way that _Don't Worry Bear_ did...

Thank You Bear is a simple story about the value of everyday things. Bear finds an empty box and thinks that Mouse would really like it. On the way to find Mouse, Bear meets Elephant, Fox, Owl and many other characters who say that the box is nothing special. Bear begins to doubt whether the box is so great after all. Then Mouse finds him and declares, "This is the best thing ever! Thank you, Bear. ''
The illustrations are simple and beautiful The colorful characters have evocatively expressive...more
