Would you be an assassin?
When is being the bad guy ever good? Is being an assassin a good or a bad thing? Do killers have different problems then regular people? Cat and mouse by James Patterson is a suspenseful, exciting action book that will blow your mind. Two people fight to the death, who will be the cat and who will be the mouse.

i stayed up all night reading. the only thing that stopped me from finishing it was when i looked out the window the sun was already up and i still have a 8 am class to attend, so i figured i got to catch at least an hour's sleep. really exciting, i couldn't put it down. gary soneji is simply sick... yet strangely fascinating.

Why do I keep picking up Alex Cross novels when I am constantly dissapointed? Is it because I read Kiss the Girls when I was much younger and at that time found it enjoyable? Ah the blissful pleasures of ignorant youth. Maybe it is just because there happen to be so many in every airport bookstore that I just can't resist. This book was apparently thrown togeather with no regard for cohesive story line, no thought of how time passes, and no thought of how real people think and feel. Alex Cross w More...

This book was good in my opinion. The character Gary Soneji from the first book came back to get Alex Cross. There was also another killer that they called Mr. Smith. The ending of the book was intense and very surprising. I recommend this book to anyone who likes the first three because James Patterson just makes them get better and better. I also think that this book was better than the third one, "Jack and Jill."

I am reviewing the novel Cat And Mouse by James Patterson which is an excellent thriller which I bought from a local secondhand bookstore. This is one of the early installments of the Alex Cross series about a criminal profiler with the police who juggles work with looking after his children. In this book he has a love interest called Christine who is a primary school teacher. She thinks he might be the one which pleases him no end. As with a lot of Patterson thrillers there are 2 cases to solve More...

This book is so hard to describe. I can only say it is like the hot girl who will talk to you, but she has horrible breath. You can't help but stick around, and hey, she's talking to you which is a bonus, but in the end, you just can't get around the fact that you know kissing her would be like licking a public toilet.
So what you might ask is so likeable about the book?
The story is awesome and Patterson can write a thriller like no one else. The story segments are great. It is the big picture th More...

I enjoyed reading this book and would have rated it higher, but after I finished it, I realized there were a lot of unanswered questions.
The main character, Alex Cross, pursues two different serial murderers. The first one is Gary Soneji, who is seriously deranged. He has decided to kill Alex and his family. After that case is solved in the middle of the book, Alex pursues Mr. Smith, another serial murderer who is murdering people all over the world.

Its about a guy who's name is Soneji he is a sociopathic killer who ever since he was little has been killing people and has made a game of killing people since he got out of prison. Soneji was trying to get revenge on Alex cross because he was the one who got him put into jail for killing people. That’s where he was raped every single day by a man in prison so when he escaped from prison he went out to get revenge. He killed people at train stations because that’s his secret dark place he has h More...

James Patterson- Cat & Mouse (Warner Books 1998) 4 Stars
Gary Soneji is back and he is coming for Alex Cross’s blood. He does not intend to kill him outright instead he wants to play a deadly game of cat and mouse. At the same time another deadly serial killer is on the loose and he is killing people all over the globe. Mr. Smith and Soneji believe that Alex Cross is the only one who can take them on, but can Cross survive two deadly killers?
The intensity of this novel was great, although the More...

This is the first time I am reading a James Patterson book. It later dawned on me that “Cat & Mouse” is actually part of a long series of Novels featuring Alex Cross, an Afro-American hero who is a criminal psychologist.
Anyone who loves crime thrillers – especially gruesome murder mysteries will love this book. This book actually covers two stories – one featuring the serial killer Gary Soneji; apparently Alex Cross has interacted with him in earlier books; Soneji makes a comeback here, and More...

#4 in the ever so cool Alex Cross series and it doesnt dissapoint. Picks right up a few months after the 'Jack And Jill' case and guess whose back? The evil serial killer Gary Soneji!!! He is back with a vengeance threatening to put an end to what he started way back in the first Patterson book devoted to Alex Cross 'Along Came A Spider' and to also put an end to the entire Cross family. Dual cases (which seems to be the way of most of the Cross books i have read so far) once again present thems More...

Like other novels in Patterson's Alex Cross series, Cat and Mouse centers around Detective Cross, and his pursuit of criminals. It differs slightly from Patterson’s other novels in this series; two serial killers are involved, and one’s true identity comes as a shock to the reader.
Although the premise of this book is interesting, it does not provide enough originality to prevent a feeling of repetition in the Alex Cross series. While the book is by no means dull, it definitely lacks suspense. More...

This is the 4th book in the series. If you haven't read the other ones you might get a few spoilers in here. So WARNING: May contain SPOILERS to previous books! Wheeeeee.
My favorite of bad guys comes back to torture and haunt poor Alex and his family, Gary Soneji. Apart from Soneji is another killer that Alex doesn't want to get involved with because he is wrapped up in dealing with Soneji who is called Mr. Smith. His killings are so gruesome people joke about him being an alien.

As is typical with James Patterson, this book was a fast paced page turner. Alex Cross is a single father, detective and profiler who solves cases that others can not. In this book Alex is out to catch his nemesis, a serial killer who has returned, this time to take out Alex Cross himself. As if that isn't enough, the book is actually two stories in one. In the second part of the book, Alex fights for his life when someone breaks into his house with the intent to kill. But how can that be? Hadn' More...

Since the new ALEX CROSS movie just came out in my area, I decided to pick up CAT & MOUSE and make it an Alex Cross week all the way around. On the bright side, the movie was pretty good--much better than most critics and die-hard Patterson fans are giving it credit for. On the other hand, CAT & MOUSE was just awful. The writing was inept ("She looked slightly beyond great."), and the story was a mess. In this novel, Patterson writes in the first-person for three different characters and More...

I first picked up this book when I needed something to read on a 12-hour drive with my church youth group down to Tennessee. My friend lent it to me, and let's just say it didn't last long at all. By the time we got there, I was almost done with the book, and I hadn't started it until about 5 hours into the trip. I was completely captivated by the characters and world James Patterson had created and became an immediate fan.

Another book in the Alex Cross series. Funny how I've only read two of all the books in this series and the same mad man is on the loose in both books! A quick page-turning read, but how does Patterson make up all these crazy people? I had to laugh at the narcisstic description in the book as it fits my brother to a "t." Of course, my brother isn't a mad serial killer, but he is a difficult person to be around!! (p. 235: They exhibit little or no concern for anyone but themselves, though they so More...

4th book in the series and I have decided that I will not continue reading anymore Alex Cross. According to what I have read online, Alex Cross books after this one get progressively worse and I am taking the internet's advice and will be taking a break from Cross. Now, this book was the same style as the previous three, which I liked but it did not surprise me at all. Patterson did not seem to offer too many options on who the killer could be so I was able to figure it out a little past halfway More...

Alex Cross is a cool customer---a black, jazz and classical piano playing, smooth, fit, smart, Ph.D. psychologist and detective---who is often called in on special murder cases because of his special skills and intuition. Here he is asked to help find Soneji, a serial killer he put in prison once before. Soneji is out to kill with a vengeance this time and Alex Cross is in danger. Cross is aided by Pierce, a talented new investigator who has made his name in England going after a serial killer n More...

James Patterson’s Cat and Mouse is a definite thriller. Patterson’s use of suspense and ambiguity creates what the novel is – a page turner. Yet, with all the book’s cliff hangers that spur anxiety, the author still gives a very descriptive background of the characters in the novel. I liked this book because of the long term detective versus criminal pursuit, which creates the idea of a cat and mouse chase. Alex Cross seemed to be an ambitious man in his career, was very dedicated, loyal and ha More...

NOTE: This review in no way diminishes my love of Patterson's Alex Cross series or his relaxed style of writing. In fact, I started a new Patterson novel last night. That said, I must add that I found Cat and Mouse confusing with Patterson alternating between two equally repulsive antagonists: the vile Gary Soneji in the U.S. and the dastardly Mr. Smith in Europe. The killings in this novel were so brutal they seemed almost gratuitous, shocking the reader for the sake of...well...shocking the re More...

Gary Soneji is back.
He is lurking in the darkness. Spying on his prey. Waiting for the correct moment to make his move.
But, will someone else steal his spotlight?
Now introducing: Mr. Smith
Mr. Smith is a crime fighter over in Europe. But there is a darker side to Smith that emerges as the novel goes on.
Will Cross be able to stop Soneji? Will he finally put an end to the madman who has terrorized his life for years?

I have not read many of Patterson's Alex Cross novels, but those that I have read so far have generally been exciting and suspenseful. Cat & Mouse was no exception. As always, I can live without the sex that Patterson inevitably includes but without a doubt he knows how to write a thriller that will keep you on your toes. One downside to this audiobook was that the quality of the recording was not that great--there are two readers and they were obviously recorded in different conditions; the More...

As you would expect from Patterson, this is a page turner, with incredibly short chapters and pacy sentences. Alex Cross is once again faced with his nemesis, Gary Soneji, as well as an even more gruesome murderer, Mr Smith. There is the usual love interest, and the usual sweet (sometimes in quite a saccharine manner) interludes with his family. This is Gary Soneji's last outing, but he makes it a difficult one for Cross as one would expect.

This was my first venture into Fiction via Audio book. As always, James Patterson was entertaining and engaging . . . it didn't lose it's appeal over this medium. What I DID lose from it was some of the nuances I get from the written word. For instance, spelling turns out to be important and when someone tells me a word, I don't readily visualize the spelling of that word. Further, listening to "romantic" scenes with the narrator's innonation kind of grossed me out (much like hearing a friend de More...

Chapter 69:
"Fifth Street was blocked off and completely barricaded to traffic!"
So what is with the releated use of the exclamation point? Is there an editor on this book or not?
Chapter 99 has a completely new plot development, and then in the past 40 pages another spin that Alex Cross knew about but didn't share with any of us... nothing like reading a mystery where teh reader doesn't get to see any of the clues.

I think this is the best Cross novel so far. Patterson makes the story complex and thrilling by changing narrators. First Alex meets up with Gary Soneji (antagonist in book 1, Along Came a Spider). I don't ant to give anything in the novel away. Kyle Craig is still adamant about needing Alexs help about the Mr smith case. The FBI thinks Mr. Smith is complex, but is he really? Or is he just as simple as your average serial killer? Thomas Pierce was finishing up his studies to be a doctor at Harva More...

Finished book four of the Alex Cross series - I had read this one before, but since I am reading the books in order, I reread this one so I would stay on track. Also, I had forgotten lots of details! In this one, Gary Soneji is back to taunt Alex Cross and to wreak havoc on Cross's family and on innocent civilians at Penn Station and in Union Station. No one is safe in America from Gary Soneji or in Europe as Mr. Smith, a serial killer there, remains unpredictable. When Alex teams up with his lo More...

I'm in the process of reading all of the Alex Cross books in order and have to say this and kiss the girls have been my favorite so far. I guessed who Mr Smith was as soon as Pierce took over the narrative but wasn't expecting the scene on how he became Mr. Smith.
And I was frantically trying to figure out the pattern which kept me engrossed.
I'm still getting used to the constant reflections Alex goes thru but I'm enjoying how each book the writing seems to improve, the descriptions and develo More...
