This is actually two books in one, and I have now read the first half, The Illustrated A Brief History of Time. I passed over this book the first time I saw it at Borders. Just knowing Stephen Hawking's reputation, it seemed a little intimidating. But I love star gazing. When I was a little girl, my dad had a small telescope that he set up in our backyard, and he would show us the moon and the planets and the stars. It was wonderful. I wish that I had had a high school science teacher who...more

Not only is the universe stranger than we imagine, it is stranger than we can imagine. -- Sir Arthur Eddington (1882-1944), English astronomer

This book made my mind explode. I never realized that the idea of alternate dimensions was actually an accepted theory. Hawking makes things pretty easy to understand. I mean, it's still incredibly mind numbing in it's complexity, but a normal person can actually grasp the concepts if they concentrate. I would recommend reading this and then reading The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Series.

Stephen Hawking is a brilliant man whose greatest contribution to society is not his science, but his ability to write about difficult concepts in simple language. His sense of humor is greatly appreciated. Hawking makes learning fun!

This book showed me how thick I am. I wish i could have really understood it all. For those who give up try Bill Bryson's short history of nearly everything.

Still in the process of reading this but it's really taught me some really cool crap about the universe in general. Amazing read.
