Pop-Up Fans In Need of Something New
Move over pop-up and lift-the-flap books! A new game is in town! Rufus Butler Seder's charming little book about animals in motion - the first ever "Scanimation" picture book - will appeal to the same demographic as the above (that is to say, anyone who likes fun...and um, young children...), with its amazing moving pictures. Guaranteed to keep little tykes engrossed (hey - it worked for me and my co-workers), Gallop has the added benefit of being far less destructible than your averag...more

Seder, Rufus Butler, Gallop!, Workman Publications, 2007, 12 pgs, scanimation board book.
Description: Using simple illustrations of animals overlaid with a sheet of striped acetate, Seder gives the animals an illusion of movement. Children are asked if they can move like the animals.
Review: Infants and toddlers (and even adults) will delight in the way that the animals seem to move across the page in this book. Additionally, Gallop! encourages children to move around and...more

X-man is absolutely obsessed with any moving pictures - he'll stare at any TV that is around for as long as you will let him. He is well on his way to having the same obsession with this book - he just loves the moving pictures.
He's currently too young to work lift-the-flap books, but he can happily turn the page of a book to make the pictures move. He would currently destroy a pop-up book in seconds - but this is a much more robust design.

Gallop!, by Rufus Butler Seder, is a fun little piece that will have young children moving around as they show off their agility and physically respond to questions like “Can you gallop like a horse?” or “Can you flutter like a butterfly?”
There’s not much of a plot here, but that’s not the point. It’s the lyrical rhyming of the text, the colorful lettering of the print, and most of all, the patented Scanimation® pictures that will have children (and their parents) wan...more

I gave this book to just about everyone this past Christmas. I found it impossible to stop playing with--it's so unique and clever!

I thought everything imaginable had been done in kids books. UNTIL I saw this one! Amazing, stimulating, and no batteries, no pens that talk, no buttons to push, no annoying bells and whistles. Now, granted, it's a childrens book, and I did read it standing in the book store...but it took me at least 20 min of turning the pages slowly...then turning them back again..re turning... looking behind..trying to figure out how these moving illustrations worked. Fascinating! I cannot imagine any k...more

I LOVE this book--I've been known to spend excessive amounts of time flipping through it over and over again! It was last year's holiday gift to all the tots in my life.

When Ms.Hoffman let me rent this book to read it to my brother. When i read to myu brother he started to laugh about how i try to act like those animals in the book. Everyday he started to say "Book, book" and i know what it mean, he try to say that he want me to read to him again. When I read he learn how to speak. He know how to say " Hos,rols, doga,at,eg,chim" and that mean, horse, roster, dog, cat, eagle, and chimp. I love this book this is a awesome book.=:)

Someone once recommended pop-up books for kids to look at on a long car trip. I would add this book to that recommendation. It is excellent for a child to enjoy even if you're unable to read it to them at the moment. I don't generally add children's books to my reviews, but if they are particularly good or unusual, I like to share them.

I think this is one of the most inventive illustrations style I have seen in years. Why this did not win the Caldecott I will never know. I had to buy a copy for both of my sisters to keep in their houses. A must for any child. Ages 4+

Wow, a moving picture book! My whole family passed this around. We have no childen younger than 8, so the novelty wore off for us after the firt couple of looks. But my guess is that the younger crowd would LOVE this book over and over!

Another volume of fascinating "illustrations", with text that runs in a similar vein found to that in Rufus Butler Seder's second book, "Swing!". People of all ages will find the scanimation to be an interesting technique.

Very cool book! I just started sending a "family fun" book home each Friday with one of my middle school students, who will read it to a younger person and then briefly journal about the experience. I used this book to kick off "family fun" books, and my kids were super-excited about it! I'm open to suggestions for future "family fun" books. Any favorites?

I used to love the "magic pictures" book I had when I was little. These Scanimation books are so neat, and O really likes it. The only drawback is that the book itself isn't very durable for the very young.

Same thing as Swing. I probably think that they are cooler than the kidos do, but they are awesome! A little on the expensive side, but worth the money!

I find the scanimation fascinating. I don't think my toddler has really noticed it. The book's definitely driven by the scanimation and not the plot.

So cool!!! Seemingly old "technology" that I can't seem to figure out. Open a page and a horse is galloping or a monkey flying through the jungle on a rope, or ...!! I love pop-up books like Robert Sabuda's and this is similar in its' creativity and its presentation. There is motion and it is much more durable for little ones hands!! It can be hard to see the image unless you hold the book at the right angle but that's a minor comment.

A creative, animated picture book, using an illustrating technique with technology. The pictures come to life—in motion with every page turn. There is a definite magical quality. The simple musical language will capture the hearts of young children.

"An exciting merge of technology and wonder that brings the animals to life." Children will love this book!! The animals really "move."
