At 9:00 on the morning of March 6, 1963, in the quiet St. Paul neighborhood of Highland Park, Mrs. Fritz Pearson glanced out her window and saw something almost unimaginable: slumped on the front steps of the home across the street was a woman, partially clothed in a blue bathrobe and bloodied beyond recognition. The woman, Mrs. Pearson would come to learn, was her beloved...more

Janet
An unimaginative book about the murder of Carol Thompson in Minnesota in 1963. Even the name of the book is unimaginative. "Dial M" is a take-off from the movie "Dial M for Murder" in which a husband murders his wife.

After Carol's brutal murder and investigation ensues and there are 7 links in the chain of circumstantial evidence pointing to T. Eugene Thompson as having hired someone to murder his wife. One of the most convincing facts was that he had taken out l...more

I loved this book. It's a true account of a 1960s murder of a housewife in St. Paul. The writing style--and subject--reminds me of In Cold Blood, one of my favorite books. The story is fascinating, and incredibly sad. The author is a former co-worker of mine, and is willing to make appearances at book clubs. He spoke at ours, and it was one of my favorite book club meetings since we formed in '03. A must read. But not at night when you're alone in your house!

This is the story of a midwest housewife who was murdered and subsequently her husband was convicted of the crime. The actual crime story only takes up half of this short book, with the remainder of the book telling the story of their children growing up in the aftermath. This is a somewhat unique idea in the genre, but it wasn't as well done in this book as I had hoped for. There were big gaps in time, and the kids remained largely enigmas even as they grew into their adult lives. Even the ...more

This is a true crime story about a prominent St. Paul, Minnesota attorney who was responsible for the murder of his wife in the early 1960's. Eugene Thompson refused to admit his guilt even after the contract killers confessed to the crime. Thompson was convicted and sent to prison for his role in the crime. This book focuses on the crime and its devastating effects on the couple's children. A sad, but interesting read.

Taking you into the life of T. Eugene Thompson, a once-prominent Minnesota attorney and his family during and after the murder of his wife Carol. Written by a journalist, this isn't flashy literature. Just an investigation into the most famous Minnesota murder case prior to the Congdons. Plenty of Minnesota history if you are curious about the details. It was a quick read.

While reading this true life account of a housewife's murder in St. Paul in the early 1960s, I had to constantly remind myself that I wasn't reading a novel, but a fact-based account, and one that concerns people whom I know. (Carol's oldest son Jeff was my lawyer about 30 years ago.) I knew the story, but not the details. A personal story for me, but one that was well-written, well-presented, and a very quick, easy read, partly 'cause I didn't want to put it down once I got going.

This book was a quick read. It approaches Carol Thompson's murder from a more emotional perspective than most historical non-fiction novels do, focusing on the lives of her motherless children and their way of coping with the past. In that sense, and the fact that I live in the area where the murder occurred, it was intriguing to me.

I had no idea the events in this book had even happened, let alone that they took place in Highland Park. This is pretty standard as far as true crime stories go, but it was interesting to read about Highland Park in the early 1960's.
Brenda
This is a book about a murder that happened in the early 60s in St. Paul. This book is very factual and not with a lot of emotions/stories, etc.
Diane
An average retelling of the story of the murder that shocked Minnesota.

Recommends it for: true crime readers; persons interested in history of the Twin Cities
I was pretty young when this murder took place, but even so, I picked up on it---it was on tv and radio constantly for awhile, inundating us with all the details they could relate. It was pretty scandalous at the time, a lawyer's wife, living in an affluant area of the Twin Cities, stabbed to death in such a brutal fashion. What makes this book stand out from other true crime books is the skillful writing and the amount of space the author devoted to the impact on the children and their relatio...more

This book is really a good read if you are from the Highland Park/St. Paul/Minneapolis area or if you really like murder mystery. A sad and chilling tale of family bllod and cold blood.

I like reading books set in the Twin Cities. This one was interesting, and I liked the way it followed the children's lives. A very sad story.
Julie
I liked the straight-forward accounting of what happened. It was freaky how many connections I could relate to from the area.
