From childhood, Darlene had promised the Lord that she would go where ever he wanted her too, that she wanted to be a missionary. How the Lord used her, and where He took her is an incredible story of faith and miracles, and blessings amidst unbelievable hardships.

Why am I drawn to true stories of people who suffer under the hands of ruthless political leaders? Here's another one. Deibler tells her experience of being a missionary in New Guinea as WWII erupts and when the Japanese invade, she becomes a POW for several years. Her story is insightful but I was uncomfortable with how freely she described deep, profoundly spiritual experiences that sustained her during her imprisonment. Her faith is pure, but some things should be too sacred to share with the...more

This book is the true story of Darlene Deibler's experiences in a Japanese prison camp in New Guinea during WWII. Darlene and her husband Russell were in New Guinea as Christian missionaries, and found themselves taken prisoner by the Japanese when the island was conquered. Darlene endured mistreatment and malnutrition, and was even accused of being a spy and put on "trial" for espionage. Through it all, Darlene's incredible faith pulled her through.

This one is an absolute life-changer. I felt wrenched and doused, depleted but exhilarated after reading this first-hand account. Am ordering a copy and will began again at the beginning and go more slowly - since my interlibrary loan edition was due too soon. This woman was a young missionary overseas (New Guinea) when she was incarcerated in a Japanese prison camp during World War II, and then put into solitary confinement for awhile and tortured, scheduled to be executed. Others that she was...more
Darlene Deibler Rose spent 8 years in New Guinea, over 4 of those as a POW during WWII. She writes, "Viewing those eight years from this far side, I marvel at the wisdom and love of our God, Who controls the curtains of the stage on which the drama of our lives is played; His hand draws aside the curtains of events only far enough for us to view one sequence at a time."

Wow! People will look at this book and think “Oh, it is about God” and not read it. What a shame. This book is all about how one woman learned to survive in a hostile, horrid place that no person deserves to face. It is about how cruel people can be to each other yet one person can stand up and make a difference. How a person will do what they need to survive, include eating worms.

This is the autobiographical story of a young woman who dedicated her life to God as a child. Little suspecting the pain and suffering she would endure in the fulfillment of her promise. But in her trials, the promise of God's faithfulness proved stronger than any disease, any loss, and any Japanese officer. Darlene learned to trust His voice and cling to the riches of his grace and peace as all else was stripped away.

This is the story of Darlene Deibler Rose who was a Christian missionary with her husband during World War II in New Guinea. When the Japanese took over the island, Darlene and her husband were separated into separate Japanese prison camps, one for women and young boys and the other for men. Darlene's story is full of details about what occurred in these camps, but underlying everything, through all of the pain and suffering, Darlene's faith never failed her. Her intense belief in God and strong...more
This is a truly remarkable story of faith and courage in the face of pain and oppression and imprisonment. The loving perseverance of this woman and her friends is riveting and convicting. Even better is how God shows himself present and faithful to her time and again, in ways that will make you want to weep (or at least that was my reaction, but I am kind of a crier). I recommend this to everyone, and even though the writing is a bit amateurish at times, I stopped noticing almost right away and...more

Another heart breaking account of World War II, this time in the jungles of Papua New Guinea. This women's faith is just amazing. To see her responses to the awful conditions of life in a prison camp leaves one believing that God really does have grace for all of us in our times of need. She shed her life on behalf of the peoples all around her. She witnessed even to the prison warden. Her faith kept her safe, hid her in shelter of God's wings.

this is a wonderful book. i first heard darlene diebler rose when i was about 10 years old at a week of missionary speakers at our church. if she had spoken all night we'd have all stayed all night to listen. her life was filled with god's presence. we heard of a baby coming back to life in the arms of his praying father. we heard a miracle involving life-sustaining bananas. and so much more. i grew up and never heard of her again, until i was listening to focus on the family and heard a mission...more
Ms. Rose was serving the Lord as a newlywed missionary in New Guinea when the Japanese invaded. Her and her husband were taken to different POW camps and finally she lost contact of what happened to him. Her sufferings were horrific, but her faith was incredible. There were moments where turning on a God you couldn’t figure out for the moment would have been so easy and tempting, but she choose the path of following God when the results weren’t too positive. The warden of the POW camp was as awf...more
This book is the true story of a young woman's experiences during World War II. She and her husband were missionaries in New Guinea and were put into Japanese prison camps after the war broke out. Her experiences are amazing and unforgettable, and her unshakable faith in God is truly inspiring. I love the way that she trusted in Him even when things looked very dark, such as when her husband died. She showed great courage and fortitude and faith. Reading this book makes me ashamed to complain ab...more
I am amazed that humans can live so long under the terrible conditions and treatment that the Japanese doled out to POWs in WWII. My friend who loaned me this book said it's like the female version of UNBROKEN. I think she's right. The book is full of scripture and miracles that kept the author, Darlene Deibler, sustained for over four years of captivity, and in spite of terrible illnesses and brutality and losses, God protected her and enabled her to minister and witness and not become a bitter...more
I will be haunted by this story for some time. Such unendurable suffering! Imagine fighting the flies for the worms in your rice. We have no idea what suffering means. Through imprisonment, losing her young husband, privation and torture, this young woman not only held onto her faith, but saw it mature and flourish in a way that only suffering could produce. If we had to choose between our bible and the Holy Spirit, which would you choose? She had no choice, but the word was hidden in her heart,...more
Newlyweds Darlene and her husband, Russell, move to New Guinea in order to share God's love with indiginous people groups there, only to find their lives changed forever by the Japanese invasion during World War II. I first read this book a long time ago, when I was first starting in Missions and it was hugely inspirational to me. Darlene faces trials and challenges that most never even have to think about, even facing certain death more than once. Her faith in God is truly what carries her thro...more

A woman's miraculous faith in a Japanese prison during WWII. Darlene, an American missionary endured 4 years of forced labor and cruel deprivation at the hands of the Japanese Army during WW2. She lost all she had except her faith in God. Despite all this, less than 4 years later, she chose to return to New Guinia for nearly 30 more years. (8 years before the war started, she had arrived in the interior of N.G. with her husband Russell on their 1st anniversary)
This is Amy's favorite book, so I figured it was high time I read it! I found it completely absorbing. It starts out a bit "jumpy"; the author bounces between times and locations somewhat erratically. Once she settles in, though, the narrative flows and moves at a good pace. I kept wishing I could hear about the same events from the point of view of others - she sounds like such a character! I wonder if she came across as "holier than thou" or sincere. I'm guessing sincere from the way folks see...more
How can I give five stars to a tale that is full of loss and sadness, one that makes your heart ache for what Darlene and the other women suffered in that Japanese war prison? Because of God's grace that shines brighter and reign ultimate to the sorrows of the moment. Darlene Deibler's testimony of faith as well as God's goodness even in the difficult times is inspiring as well as motivating.

Your heart will break for this idealistic young woman as she sets off for Indonesia and Papau New Guinea with her new husband, to share the light of the Gospel - only to have World War II intervene in their plans. She spends five years in Japanese prison camps, separated from her husband, who eventually dies in prison. But her strong faith in God eventually wins over the prison camp commander. He becomes a believer! Everything about this story amazed me. Just a short snippet to give you an idea...more
Darlene Deibler Rose’s story challenged my faith and made me realize that God causes all things to work together for good. It made me see the power of our great God and how he cares for those who seek him and trust in him.

my favorite biography. I lost my copy but then found another one for $2 on clearance... little did I know at the time that it was signed!!!
here's what Darlene wrote:

May you know and give testimony to the love and greatness of our God!
Without Him, I would not have survived!! But I do thank Him for every thing He allowed in my life ~ it was there I truly came to know Him!

True story of the author's 4+ year internment in a Japanese POW camp in Indonesia during WWII. She was a missionary with her husband when Japanese took over and took all inhabitants of island and separated men and women into work camps. Her husband died during it. She starved, fell ill to disease and malnourishment, saw friends and others beaten to death in front of her eyes, was taken by Kempetai (Japanese secret police that were like German Gestapo) and tortured and convicted on false testimon...more

Just 2 chapters in, I can tell you that this is one book you will not want to put down. Turn off the computer, turn off the phone, and don't answer the door and I am not kidding.
I have read multiple missionary stories and they always touch me. I loved all of Ruth Bell Graham's stories, and all of the Samaritan's Purse missionary tales, plus many others, but not since Hudson Taylor's accounts of his time with China Inland Mission have I been so impacted.

I appreciated this faith-affirming book, especially seeing how God protected and provided for this missionary. I only gave it three stars, instead of four, because some of it moved fairly slowly -- especially the middle of the book when she described the many different people in her barrack. I guess I would have preferred she just clued in on a few key fellow prisoners. However, the story itself is evidence of a beautiful life submitted to the Father, and I appreciated the historical setting.

What a remarkable story and even more remarkable woman! Infused with scriptures and hymns this life story is not at all preachy, a humble tale of how her faith gave her the strength to walk through unimaginable events as a POW during World War II. It starts slow and then gets a bit tedious when she recounts every woman and child in her barracks, other than that I would highly recommend, just have tissue handy in more than one place!
I give this book the highest marks possible. Darlene Deibler Rose was a missionary who lost her first husband and was then subjected to concentration camp like captivity. She had a strength and endurance that helped her to continue her mission throughout her lifetime. Evidence of God's working is peppered all throughout the book. Wow!
It took me a few chapters to appreciate this book. It is written in an older style which sounds idealized. You have to read between the lines to understand that life isn't perfect before the war begins. However, I grew to love the heroic perspective which is inspirational and uplifting. An adventure in life and faith.
