Isaïe Vaudagne et son frère Marcellin vivent chichement au hameau des Vieux-Garçons.

A la suite d'un grave accident de montagne, Isaïe a dû abandonner le métier de guide.

Marcellin ne supporte plus leur vie austère, le manque d'argent, d'être loin des plaisirs de la ville.

This isn't Troyat's greatest achievement, and it's more a novella than a novel, but it's a good example of his skill in characterization, scene-setting, and plot construction, with an ending part-predictable, part-surprising. The jacket of my elderly paperback summarises:
