Mibs Beaumont is going to turn thirteen. She’s waited since her brother Rocket turned thirteen and got his savvy, electricity. Then Fish, her middle brother, received the savvy of thunderstorms. Her mother has a wonderful savvy doing every task perfectly. Every member of Mibs (Mississippi) Beaumont’s family has a savvy. Her grandfather can make land out of nowhere (whenever I read this, I though of the uses with a huge world population). Mibs wonders what her savvy will be, but disaster stri...more

Law, Ingrid. 2008. Savvy.
Savvy is another book that had me at hello. "When my brother Fish turned thirteen, we moved to the deepest part of inland because of the hurricane and, of course, the fact that he'd caused it." Isn't that a great first sentence? Puzzling enough to hook you? I think so. A few pages later we read, "Monday through Wednesday, we called our thin stretch of land Kansaska. Thursday through Saturday, we called it Nebransas. On Sundays, since that was the Lord'...more

Two days before Mississippi “Mibs” Beaumont turns thirteen, her father is critically injured in a car accident and left comatose in Salina Hope Hospital. Coming of age in Mibs’ family is special, though—her mom’s side of the family all have “savvies,” superpowers of sorts ranging from doing everything perfectly (her mother) to her brother Rocket’s command of electricity (he burns out light bulbs when he’s upset but is the only one who can jump-start their ancient station wagon)...more

Savvy, written by newcomer Ingrid Law and scheduled to be published this May, was one of those great books that I just couldn't put down from start to finish. It is definitely a quick read, held my attention the entire time, and had me rooting for every single character involved in the plot, of which there are quite a few!

Mibs Beaumont is turning 13 in just two days and when she does her life will change forever. Not just because she will be a teenager with all the drama and angst that entails, but because the Beaumont's are different - whenever someone in their family turns 13 their savvy hits and there's been some whoppers: 19 year old Rocket controls electricity and 14 year old Fish controls the weather - well, sort of. Really, Rocket and Fish haven't learned to control their savvies yet; the process of cont...more

I liked just about everything about Savvy. Interesting characters--Mibs, Fish, Lester, Lill, Will Junior, Bobbi, all well-developed. I really enjoyed getting to know these characters. I had high hopes for Lester, smiled when Lill brought out the best in him, and worried when trouble met the big pink bus.
While the story concept is intriguing, it's Ingrid Law's writing that made the story shine. She has a wonderful savvy for words, if you will. Mib's description of her father, for insta...more

Mississippi Beaumont, better known as Mibs, is the soon-to-be thirteen-year-old daughter in an extraordinary family, a family whose members, usually on their thirteenth birthday, become aware of and able to use their "savvy," a supernatural gift or power. Don't get me wrong, they're not superheroes, just ordinary people who each have one extraordinary ability. Grandpa can move mountains, literally. Rocket can create electricity, and Fish creates weather (not always under control). Each...more

It was SUCH a fun concept, but for some reason, I found this book dissatisfying.
The premise: in a Midwestern nowheresville known as "Nebraskas" (or possibly "Kansaska") lives the beauregarde family. They appear to be a normal, loving big family, with one exception: when a Beauregarde turns thirteen, he or she develops a "savvy": some odd supernatural ability. Mibs is just about to turn thirteen. Her brothers can control lightning and start hurricanes. She ...more

In Mibs' family, turning thirteen is the most special of birthdays. And Mibs is days away from turning thirteen. In her family, almost everyone gets their savvy on their thirteenth birthday, a special power that they then need to figure out how to harness and use. One of her brothers, Fish, has the power to control wind, and on his thirteenth birthday he created a hurricane. That's why they now live far far from any water in Kansas. As Mibs' birthday approaches, her father is in a terrible ...more

J LAW - fantasy, family tragedy, coming of age.
Mississippi Beaumont is about to have her most important birthday ever, number 13. This will be the day her savvy is revealed and she can start learning to scumble it. Her brother Rocket control electric currents, and Fish causes hurricane, Momma's perfect at making things, and Grandpa can make new land spring up anywhere.
But when Poppa's in a terrible crash the day before Mibs' birthday, she knows nothing will go smoothly. Rocket and Momma go ...more

Her grandfather can make the Earth move. Her brother can make hurricanes. Her mother is perfect. Mibs is normal...so far. But she's coming up on her thirteenth birthday, and that's when her family generally inherits their savvy--their special talent.
Just days before Mibs' very special birthday, though, her father gets in a terrible car accident, and the outlook, well. It's not good. Her mother and oldest brother head to the nearest city while Mibs and the rest of her siblings are stu...more

Savvy is about a very special family. Each Beaumont wakes up on his or her 13th birthday with a magic power, or a “savvy.” When Mibs’ poppa is seriously hurt in an accident just days before her 13th birthday, she is sure her savvy will be the power to wake him up. In her desperation to get to her father, she gets her family (and a boy her age and his older sister) in an adventure full of laugh out loud moments, near disasters, and first kisses.

This magical children's novel reminded me a bit of Joseph Helgerson's "Horns and Wrinkles" with a hefty dose of Nina Kiriki Hoffman thrown in.
In Mibs Beaumont's family, thirteenth birthdays tend to be VERY major occasions. That's when every Beaumont receives his or her Savvy, a magical power that he or she must learn to control. Mibs's brother Fish can control the weather (well, sort of -- he has a tendency to cause hurricanes). Grandpa Beaumont causes earthquakes. And Mibs's m...more

I couldn't put Savvy down until I was finished! It was fun and touching with great characters and a clever premise. When a Beaumont kid turns 13, they get their "savvy." Mib's older brothers have powerful savvys: one can make storms and the other makes electricity. What will Mib's savvy be? Right before Mib's 13th birthday her father is hospitalized from a terrible car accident. She is determined to visit her father at the hospital 90 miles away because she is convinced that her sav...more

There's a sweetness and an old-time storytelling feel to this book that I enjoyed. Although at times, the "voice" could be a little too cloying. But I like the mix of characters--Mibs and her earnestness, Bobbi, Will Junior, etc. I feel like we got a good sense of Mama and Poppa. Even Lester, Lill, and the Preacher's wife. But I feel like we could have gotten more on Samson (why was he just so darn quiet?), Fish (he seemed to be brooding the whole time. He was always on the outside of ...more

The Beaumont family each have a savvy, a supernatural gift that is not revealed until their thirteenth birthday (think "The Giver"). Mibs' 13th is coming up, but her celebration is delayed when her fagther is in an accident. She can't go to visit her father, but she is convinced she must get there to save him. She and some of her siblings try to reach their father, and along the way meet or pick up several quirky characters who go along on the journey (think "Bremen Town Musici...more

Mississippi (A.K.A Mibs) Beaumont, is about to turn 13. She knows when she turns 13, she'll get a little something more than most people, her Savvy. A savvy is a knack for something, Rocket, her older brother makes lightning, Fish (another older brother) makes thunderstorms. You can tell it's a non-public event when they turn 13. But what happens when their father is in a car accident, and their mom leaves to go to the hospital? Miss Rosemary comes over with Will Jr., and Bobbie (her children) a...more

What would it be like to grow up in the Beaumont family knowing that on your thirteenth birthday that something special will happen to you? Mibs can't wait for her birthday to find out what her 'savvy' or special power will be. Her older brothers can move water and electricity. She dreams of all of the things that she will be able to do with her newfound power until her father is hurt in a car accident. Then the only thing that she dreams of is being reunited with her family. When her thirte...more

I would recommend this charming coming-of-age story just for the ticklesome "voice" of Mibs Beaumont. Each person in her family has a supernatural (and often quirky) gift, or savvy, which must be scumbled before they are fit to mingle with the public. Mibs comes to terms with her own disappointing gift and recognizes that even non-Beaumonts wield their own savvies. A delightful book from a first-time author. Comes out in May.

This is definitely a book great for bigger kids and young teens, and I can't help but give it all five stars, even though I'm a boring old grown up. I just fell in love with Ingrid Law's writing style - it's very clever, quite rythmic, and enchanting. Also, her story line and concept for the story were so clever and yet not so far-fetched that I couldn't suspend my disbelief. It was just a great idea and a great story. I can't wait to see what Ingrid comes up with next.
