(Reprinted from the Chicago Center for Literature and Photography []. I am the original author of this essay, as well as the owner of CCLaP; it is not being reprinted here illegally.)

I don't have a whole lot to say about this one; co-authored by two chemistry experts, one of whom is also a veteran of general-interest guides to the subject, The Joy of Chemistry is what the authors call a childlike overview of that world but written specifically for adults, taking an A-B-C approach

As a science teacher looking for some new ideas to relate chemistry to everyday life, I did enjoy this book. There are sections on many different areas of chemistry (solutions, phases, etc). There are also many demonstrations with common household materials that would be easy to adapt for a classroom.

The book did leave me a bit confused as to its potential audience. I get the impression this book is meant to turn the layperson on to the wonders of chemistry. Some of the chapters were written in

I loved it. This book was so enjoyable and I found within it simple analogies and descriptions to topics that students sometimes find difficult. Highly recommended!

This book wasn't written for science majors -- it was marketed to lay people who have an interest in Chemistry. I don't think it did a very good job of appealing to that demographic. Cathy Cobb's writing was too technical and not good at breaking down chemical concepts for casual readers. Some of the experiments she advocated were dangerous. You'd better hope nobody tries them in a poorly ventilated area without safety glasses on.

There are easier, safer experiments she could have recommended. Th

Good reading! For the layperson; the stated purpose being to bridge the gap between chemistry books for children and chemistry textbooks. Or as the authors put it, "a fireside chemistry: a book for the armchair scholar." Includes hands-on demonstration ideas for each topic. Ran out of armchair time before due back at public library, perhaps best a chapter at a time, if I owned a personal copy.

When I first read this amazing book, I realized it should be taught in all Egyptian primary education schools instead of the current chemistry books which should be recycled immediately to make good toilet paper!

I did not finish this entirely. I does not lend itself to straight through reading. I greatly enjoyed picking topics of interest and skipping around here and there. For example, When Good Pizza Goes Bad explained why we liked the oven-fired cheese pizza a lot at dinner but did not like the reheated pieces the next day. The list of over eighty supplies you are to gather is intimidating but most are in your kitchen so do not panic. If you are curious, have kids, or work with kids, you will appreci ...more

This book is fantastic. I just graduated with a degree in political science last year and just started working towards a degree in science or engineering (haven't decided whether I am going to major in chemistry, biology, or chemical engineering). I just started general chemistry 1. The Joy of Chemistry was extremely helpful in helping me prepare for general chemistry. Over e past year I read through a general chemistry textbook and I was amazed to find that The Joy of Chemistry actually explain ...more

This book took me forever to finish for two reasons...

1. I was reading it during breakfast and kept interrupting to keep up on my magazines, and
2. I kept stopping to take down ideas on how to use this book in my teaching.

All in all, an extremely good read if you are interested in an avenue into self-instruction in chemistry. Lots of great suggestions for home experiments, lots of great explanations of the topics, and very readable as well. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to learn (or relea

"The book did leave me a bit confused as to its potential audience. I get the impression this book is meant to turn the layperson on to the wonders of chemistry. Some of the chapters were written in a way a layperson could grab a hold of the content. Some of the chapters were a bit esoteric and assumed vocabulary knowledge that was fairly academic in nature.

In summary, I think if you have an interest and s

This book fills a need: there are very few overviews of chemistry that aren't textbooks (there are many more of physics and of biology). I found it fascinating and well-written. The prose could have been relaxed a bit, and sometimes the discussion assumed more scientific literacy than it should have. But in general, this book is great.

The book was great but it has a difficult language to understand for someone doesn't know a lot about chemistry
So I decided to read it again next summer maybe I'll understand it very well
