This book contains many different types of short stories, e.g. ghost, murder, love. All are quick reads. Some are very short. They cover a variety of settings and characters and are ideal to read in your coffe break. The title story won third prize in the Chudleigh Pheonix Competition 2011. These stories are all crafted with the skill of the practised storyteller. It is a treasure chest of entertainment. There are 20+ stories, several of which are better described as flash fiction rather than short story, but more importantly they feature a wide variety of genre.

My particular favourite was ‘Witch Hunt’ and I certainly didn’t see the ending coming in that one.

Quaint little book of short stories, moral tales and fables. Some were predictable, while others approached the subject matter from a different perspective; one or two were wholly enjoyable. Penny writes impeccably well, delicately and compassionate in her telling of human emotion, especially where the characters are fragile, broken or were children. One suspects that she is a mother herself, having written the bond between parent and child so well. For me, most of the stories were a little shy ...more

The Mermaid is a wide ranging diverse group of well written shorts with two things in common.

One, each story, whether essentially flash fiction or a fully fleshed tale, is about relationships. How essential our desires for or our involvement in relationship are. Whether as a man to a woman, a woman to a man, a child to an adult, or even from an animal to a person. This short book is dense with the possibilities.

Second, directly or indirectly, each story carries the weight of the belief in human
