I thought this book was really great because it is about a girl named Martine and her family in Africa, her grandmother and her white giraffe. I think that it is really cool that Martine has a giraffe that loves her and she gets to ride on it because it lives in the game preserve next to her house. Martine and her classmates are going on a cruise. She leaves and misses her giraffe. Everything seemed just fine until a storm hit the boat and everyone went overboard. Martine and her friends almost More...

A sequel to The White Giraffe. Martin is settling in with her prickly grandmother just as she sets off for two weeks on a boat trip with her class. She has just her one friend, who is not always predictable. A number of the classmates are swept overboard and washed to a 'deserted' island where all Martine's skill's, her healing ability, her decisions to reach out to others and her bravery come into play. African mysticism and Martine's destiny are potent elements of these satisfying novels.

This is not my favorite book by St John, but it is still good. It's a little more like Lord of the Flies and less like the first story in the series. Martine's school field trip goes terribly wrong when the boat sinks and Martine, Ben, and a few others drift to a deserted island. While on the island, they discover a problem that may affect the dolphins in the area.

The setting is great, but the idea of a boat sinking is a little tough to believe. The dolphins are also a little too More...

The sequel to The White Giraffe finds Martine heading out with her school chums on a field trip to see the Sardine Run. While on the trip seven children, including Martine and Ben, are swept overboard in a storm. Dolphins save the children and take them to a deserted island. They must learn to work together to survive and solve the mystery of beached dolphins. Once they discover the danger to the dolphins, can they save them? Will they themselves be rescued? Another charming tale from St. John; More...

This book is a follow-up to the white giraffe, and while that one was just an exciting adventure with a little enviromentalism thrown in, this one is really scary in several parts and has much more of the "save the animals" preaching. I am a little concerned about my 11 year old reading it because I'm afraid she'll freak out at certain parts where it is scary. I liked the fact that the female heroin uses her wits and survival skills to get through these situations, but I won't throw More...

What would you do if you were stuck on a deserted island surrounded by undersea mines and only your stuck-up classmates for comfort?

Martine, an orphan who recently moved to South Africa to live with her grandmother on a wildlife game reserve, enjoys her new life in Africa. Until, that is, she leaves on a class trip to witness the Sardine Run. For her classmates, it's a chance to witness a natural phenomenon. But for Martine, it is her worst nightmare. Not only will she be on a boat More...

I loved this second installment in The White Giraffe series. I must admit that I was a bit skeptical about the setting for the book, which is a deserted island in the Bazaruto Archipelago off the coast of Mozambique, after happily becoming acquainted with the Sawubona Game Reserve (Martine's home) near Cape Town, South Africa in the previous book. However, Lauren St. John has managed to make Dolphin Song just as suspenseful, adventurous, and exciting as The White Giraffe. I love reading about More...

DOLPHIN SONG REVIEW:
BY:LAUREN ST.JOHN

Martine“s class are going on a ocean voyage to see one of the gratest spectacles on Earth, the "Sardine Run". At first the adventure was exiting but then there was a storm causing the ship to sink. It threw Martine“s classmates overboard into shark waters. Martine and a few of her classmates were saved by some dolphins, but they end up in a des More...

One of my favorite books along with the first of this book"The White Girraffe" Great for kids and
teachers, parents, and even teens.Martine now takes a big place in my life and a good lesson for
kids to stand up for what they believe in and for parents/adults to support them and I hope you like the marvelous book about a young girl and her animal friend(s).

Continues the story of Martine and her white elephant friend. In this book, Martine and several classmates are marooned on a tropical island after their ship is almost swamped during a storm. They are rescued by a pod of dolphins and brought to the island, but then in a turnabout of events, Martine and Bed are able to help the dolphins as well. This is a must-listen, as the narrator and her South African accent totally make the book.

A sensitive story about Martine and her unique gift to communicate with and heal dolphins. We first meet her as an internally troubled girl, affected by the death of her parents and other personal issues from childhood, to then triump over them to save herself and her friends.

An enjoyable read of a truely brave girl.

Didn't enjoy this one as much as "White Giraffe" and "The Last Leopard", but St. John's books are wonderfully different in their exotic settings. I hope she writes more about this young girl and her special gift.

I think that this is a good because it is one of my favorite genres, animals, and the author used interesting ways to portray the environment. I also like it because it has a lot of action and isn't boring.

Sequel to The White Giraffe. Good as well. Hoping that when my daughter reads it, she will be able to grasp some of the concepts. It's hard to believe how young the social drama of "friends" begins. Argh.

I thought I would like this a lot more than I did. It was like a cross between Swiss Family Robinson and the Wild Thornberries. It bordered on cheesy for me 90% of the time.
It is an interesting idea - a bunch of kids shipwrecked in the middle of the ocean and saved by Dolphins. Maybe you'll like it more then me!

I loved Lauren St. John's White Giraffe so much that I am so excited to read this one. I did enjoy this one quite a bit. She knows how to write an adventure, that's for sure.

Martine's class is off to help count Dugongs at the sardine run. The only problem is that Martine is terrified of deep water. Can her friends the dolphins help?

This one is so good! I liked the first Martine book, The White Giraffe, better, but I really enjoyed this one also. It is a blend of magical realism and tween angst, but it is a charming story. The best explanation I can give is that it is what Gloria Whelan would write if she wrote fantasy.

I love the strong female main character!
