What I recall about this book is the really clever writing. Peck does not talk down to teenagers, his heroines are likable and resourceful. This was one of my favorites. Read 30 years ago so do not remember much more than the tone and the feeling it evoked.

"Miss Teen Superdoll" is the name of a beauty contest, and when farm girl Verna is invited to go to the big city with her friend Darlene, who's competing in the contest, she jumps at the chance. Along the way, she learns some lessons about the falseness of glamour and what real beauty is, especially in herself. The descriptions of her ride from the airport to Manhattan are enough to entertain any Queens native like myself, and the climax of the story is an absolute knock-out.

A sort of parody of beauty pageants, as I recall, told from the perspective of Verna, a candid Midwestern girl
