Mind Fuck (The Administration #1 )
There are no bad guys or good guys. There are only better guys and worse guys. One of the worse guys is Val Toreth. In a world in which torture is a legitimate part of the investigative process, he works for the Investigation and Interrogation Division, where his colleagues can be more dangerous than the criminals he investigates. One of the better guys is Keir Warrick. Hi...more

This is a Science Fiction Dystopian Thriller with a totalitarian regime set in New London some time in the future. Romance...No. Mind Fuck!....that it is. But Excellent never-the-less...

I originally read this book back in September (yes..Only just getting round to review)... My initial thoughts after reading it, 4 stars - well, here I am a month later and....YES, I am still obsessed with these characters! They have a way of getting inside your head and worming their way under your skin. Trying...more

First off, what a perfectly fitting title. The plot was fascinating and intriguing. A mystery that had everything rolled up into one amazing book: suspense, political intrigue, deception, head games, sex.
It's set in the dystopia future of New London where totalitarianism is in full force. Val Toreth is a para-investigator for the Investigation and Interrogation Division under "The Administration." He does his job without regret. He's manipulative, promiscuous, ruthless, has no conscienc...more

"I fuck minds," Toreth said pleasantly.
Hrrrmmm...mixed feelings. I think I set my expectations too high and didn't quite get there. For reasons completely unknown, I thought I was going to be reading a harder-edged sci-fi. Don't ask me why. I almost figured that I was going to be getting the sci-fi version of Psy-Cop. Maybe it's because of the simulation part of the story, which I thought would be more of a focus.
Truth be told, I would have preferred more of a sci-fi bent. My favorite parts...more

Wow. I'm really shocked that I enjoyed this book as much as I did. I'm not even going to begin trying to give a summary of the book or tell what happens because quite frankly I'm Mind Fucked. I'm STILL trying to wrap my head around some things. Maybe I'm just dense.
1. This was my first real scifi-ish book that I've read. I'm not familiar with the whole other world/dystopian stuff so this was all new for me. I had trouble remembering some of the smaller characters names at times and had tr...more

This was a deep, complicated heavy read for me. Not at all what I was expecting when I started to read. Primarily it was a mystery, who-done-it, wrapped around a world-building, emotional thrill ride where the true focus is on rather dysfunctional (emotionally) characters. There has already been much said about the main characters who are quite complex and are being rolled out and developed, I believe, in the next books. I find Toreth to be fascinating. Well... This was not at all what I expected.
I was prepared to read a dark BDSM story with a hulking brute for a main character and a plot that would serve the sex.
Instead, this story had actual meat. And not of the penis-kind.
The focus was a suspense plot, which was intricately set up and had the political, psychological, sci-fi and dystopian elements nicely weaved together.
There was very little focus on the sex -which was even glossed over at times- and it had the underlying purpose of defi...more
Re-read done: sticking with the 4 stars. when you've read the entire series before, you need to take a big step back in time and I wasn't really up-to-speed in the beginning. I found it difficult to connect with the underlying murder story. and the dynamics between Toreth and Warrick are so different at first! I was soo impatient, God! After a while I settled into the story and i got to appreciate it fully. From a thriller-detective POV this is one of the best i've ever read.... there are no sho...more

I'm always a bit cautious when it comes to stories about dystopias and totalitarian systems: they fascinate and depress me both because they explore a potential for unscrupulousness, selfishness, and a natural obedience in human beings that is both scary and disturbing since it's all too believable, a 'what-if' scenario that I never want to think about but still can't help considering.

This is, by far, the most enjoyable, addictive, and amazing story that I have ever come across in all my readings. And Manna Francis is one of the greatest storytellers.
Mind Fuck has an incredibly intelligent plot. It plays out like a sci-fi mystery blockbuster with sex added in. Manna’s voice is so clear, so focused in telling the tale, that I could see the story unfold before my eyes. The mystery in it is good. It is multi-layered and clever. fans of dark future dystopias and messed-up but really hot m/m romance
I have such a huge future dystopia kink, I can't even tell you. This - next to imaginative portrayals of fallen angels (no, really) - is my favorite thing in all mediums of fiction. Mind Fuck nails that and more, set in a world controlled by a totalitarian "Administration" and rich corporates. The story (an interesting, complex murder mystery/conspiracy thriller) is told through the eyes of sociopathic Interrogator (read: torturer for the state) Toreth, sex-on-legs who'll sleep with anyone who's...more

"People are generally interested for a reason."
"Of course. It has a bearing on what I do for a living. I fuck minds," Toreth said pleasantly.

Now, contrary to popular belief, I'm not a simpleton who only likes one kind of book and can't appreciate anything else. :) I like (sometimes) reading outside my norm and being entertained w/o the typical boy meets boy, falls in love, has steamy sex in every chapter, and live HEA.
I liked Mind Fuck. I DID! (Well, at least the 50% of it that I didn't skim.) Ha!

There was NO WAY, I told myself, that I was going to buy the paperbacks after having read all the ebooks for free. But in the end, I simply couldn't resist the awesomeness that's Manna Francis.

I think that says everything there is to say about The Administration, doesn't it? :)

3.5 Stars. Not what I expected and more than I anticipated.
I’m not sure what I expected but either way I’ve come out the other side with more questions than answers, and not because I skimmed, I held off the skimming and paid attention I promise.
There are masses of technical futuristic administrative procedures or protocol, investigations and interrogation, Sim machine technology, analysis, bio-chemistry and fuck knows what else to wrap your head around – a mind fuck indeed.

At this point, after the second read in less than a month, I think it's fair to admit this series has eaten my brain. And/or taken over my heart. Reading this the second time, I can pace myself a little better - the first time around I was reading almost too fast because I had to know more, read on more quickly. And some things get lost in the progress. There's also the fact that reading the first book of a series after you've finished reading the series also helps you look at the character who'...more
What can I say? I feel totally mind-fucked.
I started reading with certain expectations which got repeatedly blown away. Most of Toreth's actions showed a human side, which I expected would be much more difficult to find. He seemed far more vulnerable and less in control than Warrick. Unexpected and threw me for a while.
But I do like their dynamics.

"It is a historical truism that any technology that can be used for pornography or other applications in the sex industry will succeed."
I want to give this an outright 2 but I can't bring myself to let it fall in the same category as my recent 2-star reads so 3 it is.
Reading this book felt like how I imagine being driven in a Maserati… for a dinner date at a McDonald's. I love me some Chicken McNuggets but it's kind of a let-down considering.

I'm surprised to see so many five stars for this book. This is not a bad book, but the investigation is endless, sex scenes are nonexistent except for one at the beginning. Yes, the description of the research center about virtual reality is convincing, as well as all corporate and political maneuverings. That remember me events of my own corporate history. Even the disappearance of the most beautiful plants to decorate offices set in anticipation of the arrival of someone important reminded me...more
All I can say is 'wow'... This novel is much more a political murder mystery than a romance but if you're in the mood for something dark and gritty, something you can sink your teeth into, then this may be for you. If you have enjoyed Aleksandr Voinov's Scorpion or Dark Edge of Honor, or Brue's Yakuza Pride, then I have no doubt you'll enjoy this story.

Review of 1st reading, July 2010:
3 stars for the 305 pages out of the 499 on my reader. I am stopping here but will probably go back to it another day.
While I think Toreth is a great character (5 stars to him!) and very addictive, my only enjoyment of Mindfuck is from his interaction with Warrick. Unfortunately, these are few and far between and apart from the first encounter in the sim, the rest of the book, thus far, is filled with the tedious details of a very boring murder investigation. The first novel of the Administration series fits with Dorothy L. Sayers's subtitle of one of her novels: "A Love Story with Detective Interruptions" – provided that one treats the word "love" broadly. It's the tale of a torturer and an opponent to torture trying to best one another and being a little too interested in each other to make for an easy power play. Then fate intervenes in the form of a corpse.
At the time of the merger with Investigation, Toreth had been at the Interrogation Divisi...more
I was really impressed by this book. Character dynamics are a big thing for me, and I don't think I've ever read a relationship quite like the one between the two main characters. (Although calling it a "relationship" might be pushing it a bit much.) The dynamic between Toreth and Warrick is 100% power play/vying for control, which is almost unheard of in fiction. Power plays can be tiresome if they're allowed to drag out or dominate a work of fiction, but the author seems to know that, because...more
This was not what I was expecting at all. The story was a very well-crafted mystery/suspense, legalese/corporate espionage thriller set in a not too distant future that was completely believable. The elements of BDSM were quite subtle and well placed to enhance the story but their inclusion in the plot, as well as the main character's fluid sexuality, have most likely doomed this work to the fringes of publishing. I guess the mainstream publishing houses don't think the general public is ready f...more
Really wonderful start to this series. SciFi with a brilliantly developed world (in the near future) with a society run by big business/corporations. In such a fachist society torture is used for any possible anti goverment business. Really nasty place.

A friend was kind enough to loan "Mind Fuck" to me, for which I am grateful. The ten dollar price point is simply unacceptable to me in e-books. Though, I must concede if pricing were based upon volume, then this book would be the closest I have yet seen to being worth that kind of money.

Val Toreth works for Investigation and Interrogation, a department of the Administration known for their political cases and violent methods, and his new case is an unusual one: a pair of apparently causeless deaths that may be tied to a cutting-edge virtual reality machine under development of one Keir Warrick. Mind Fuck is the beginning of the Administration series, and self-/indie-published--and surprisingly good. It's not as edgy as it expects to be: there's a surprisingly lack of sexual co...more

- Very well drawn futuristic, dystopian society. This doesn’t feel like a present-day novel with occasional hints at the story’s world; the setting IS New London. Well done.
- The plot begins slowly but becomes more intriguing the further into the book you get. It’s got quite a snowball effect. (However, see cons below also.)

I've been writing original slash since 2002 — or homoerotic fiction, gay fiction, m/m romance, yaoi, as you prefer. Original slash is my personal term of choice because I feel it best represents my writing in terms of style and what readers can expect to find there — original fiction following the stylistic traditions of slash fanfiction.
