This and Monster are two of the most complete modern-era "black men start life in trouble, and then grow up to, well, not die as quickly" tales.

I really enjoyed his tale, insofar as it has to do with the nature of incarceration in this country. Nathan wants to do well, wants to write, but because of his past, what color he is, and his "debt to society," he's not taken seriously or really given a fair shot. And, as Jayson Blair has shown, while being black is not ...more

This is another book I read a very long time ago (I am guessing high school), but it is certainly a classic and quite memorable. Some of my favorite quotes come from this book, especially the part about pounding the pavement - creatively written. Although it focuses on African-American men, African-American women should read it, too, because we are so full of misunderstandings about them. This book was also a required reading for a cultural course I took in graduate school. I was disappointe...more

Man oh man! This book kicks, punches, and rocks you gently at the end. Should be required reading in high school; there's so much happening in McCall's up from crappy living to productive living; it's brutal (the description of running a train still makes me shudder) and McCall doesn't pull any punchs--very real and not for the weak hearted. I love the ending: it's all about choices, and when you finally recognize you have them.

It's been said that he is not a good writer. He uses (and even misuses) cliches which make you roll your eyes for a moment. But as memoir cliches reveal new detail even when they appear to be, well, cliche. Irony! And as far as memoirs go, no one else has revealed the struggle for self knowledge as perfectly -the fits and starts, terrible mistakes, disecting what it means to me a man.

This book provides a memorable and honest account of one man's internal struggle with his anger which stemmed from the racial inequities in the U.S. Before his incarceration, Nathan's actions and attitudes are at times reprehensible; however, I admire the way that he decided to change paths and turn his life around.

The plight and struggles of African-American youth, particularly men, in America. Informative, but much of the information is redundant.....
