You know that when a doctor gets killed, and his life seems to be squeaky clean, that something's going on behind the scenes. Eve Dallas, detective extraordinaire, is suspicious and begins digging into the good doctor's past. The resolution to the mystery is satisfyingly creepy, the banter is good, and Eve's incredibly wealthy husband Roarke gives her a fabulous leather coat which made me long for a fabulous leather coat of my very own. (That has absolutely nothing to do with the book, but it di...more

Actually my copy is a hardcover - one of those 2/$10 things at Walgreens. Not really important.

I thought I should read at least one book by J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts). I'm glad I did. I may have to read more of her books. This one was a page-turner that I couldn't put down. If her others are as good, she's a good author to follow.

Inside were the lists of books by J.D. Robb and by Nora Roberts. I was interested to see that she wrote a book "with" herself - one listed by Nora Roberts AND J.D. Ro...more

Book Review: 3 Treasure Boxes

Dr. Wilfred B. Icove is renowned for his reconstructive and cosmetic surgeries. He has been dubbed as Dr. Perfect and is loved by everybody. So who would kill him? Eve wants to find this out after he is found dead in his office from a stab wound to the heart. As Eve follows the trail of clues she discovers the shocking truth about this doctor.

To date there are 43 books in the In Death series, with one more expected to be released in September of 2012. These books are...more

This may be my favorite J.D. Robb book. It incorporates a lot of my favorite elements of the In Death series, and it's some decent science fiction (who'd've thought!) to boot. Despite taking place in the 2050s, the series normally doesn't use much science as a jumping-off point: advanced technology mostly manifests in ways to solve or commit crimes in more complex ways, and to show off some neat Jetsons-like inventions I admittedly covet (AutoChef, will you one day be mine?), but Robb doesn't us...more

In some ways this "in Death" book is possibly the best of the series in that it really emphasizes the futuristic element of the books while maintaining the mystery and romance aspects. The premise on which the book is based is fantastic and hopefully will always remain pure fantasy, but it has you reading as fast as you can to find out what will happen next. Once again you know who the killer is early on, but do you? Only in the most superficial way. As the action develops, you learn more and mo...more

Roarke and Eve are discussing the arrival of his relatives from Ireland!... OMG, hilarious!

"Should we have something separate for the children, do you think?"
"What?" Eve frowned at him as she poked at the food on her plate. Oh, that. Hell, I don't know. You're supposed to know how to do this stuff."
His face was a mirror of his frustration. "And how am I supposed to know how to do something I've never done before?" He scowled into his wine. "It's unnerving, that's what it is."
"You could contact t

I really liked this installment to the series. A world renowned reconstructive doctor has been murdered in his office at his place of work. The suspected murderer is caught on security camera casually walking into his office and just as casually walking out again once the deed is done. In order to catch the killer Eve delves into the life of the victim. What she finds is that the victim is not always free and clear of dirt either.

This book really kept me glued to the page. I was very interested...more

The whole series, as regular readers know, is set in the near-future 2150s in New York City. Usually, this is a mechanism to speed up the action without blatantly sacrificing the story's credibility. It avoids much of the real-life tedium of gathering evidence and makes it possible to learn things via computer research that would be difficult to impossible to discover.

Unlike most of the preceding volumes, though, this one features some overtly science-fictional plot twists. But like the best of...more

I'm good with the fact that this series takes place in a near future, and I slid very easily into the plausible advances Roberts has populated her world with. But I found this story line just over my line into "far-fetched;" more problematically, it's such a massive scope that, along with the ongoing personal story lines of the main characters, it's all just too much. The ending feels rushed and unfinished, and even against character, as Dallas basically just hands the fallout over to the feds a...more

A fantastic installment that pulls Eve, Roark and company into the world of genetic cloning and what else --- murder! What starts out as a typical homicide investigation for Eve quickly spirals into a whirlpool of family secrets, ethics and integrity issues that pull Eve into different directions as she must confront her own ethics and integrity while making judgments on others.

Throwing into the mix is the arrival of Roark's LARGE extended family from Ireland to celebrate Thanksgiving, which ple...more

Dr. Wifred Icove is found dead in his office. Who would have possibly wanted him dead? He was Dr. Perfect. He and his son ran a very successful cosmetic and reconstructive surgery practice. Everybody loved him.

Eve Dallas, police lieutenant in the year 2059 believes everything is a bit too perfect. No one is a saint. This looks like a professional hit but who would have wanted the good doctor dead? Dalllas starts out with her dogged persistence and wonderful gut instinct and follows through until...more

I tend to forget that this series is a crime-romance set in the late 2050s (so far). With the exception of all the futuristic technology and weird clothes (McNab) the books don't really make me think it is set in the future. Well Origin in Death was a smack on the face sci-fi dealing with genetic manipulation, cloning and evil doctors playing God.
The thing I loved about this book was how, unsure and ill at ease Roarke was about his hosting his family for thanksgiving throughtout the book. It hu...more

Book 21 in the In Death series. Works as a stand alone, but I suspect you'd get more enjoyment out of it if you started with one of the earlier ones.

Doctor Wilfred Icove Sr. is murdered while sitting at the desk in his office. He's been stabbed through the heart with a scalpel, and the last woman to see him alive is seen on security tapes strolling calmly out of there, cool as a cucumber. Eve Dallas and her partner Delia Peabody were in the building investigating a different homicide, so are amo...more

This series always gives me just what I expect. A good book, with some mystery and detecting, a little romance, and memorable characters. The futuristic aspect is well-done I think. The author gives us a glimpse into a future that doesn't seem too far-fetched to be real. I love the auto-chef and I want one, but I wonder if it will be just as aggravating to program a meal as it is to plan and cook one? The clean up should be easier, right? The basis of the mystery in this volume scared me. I see...more

No matter how much I try, Nora Roberts aka JD Robb is not my cup of tea. First of all, this is no mystery since very early on you know where it's going, all you do is follow the detectives hammer the nails in the coffin, and the surprises are mild. It felt more like the author wanted to be on a soap box regarding genetic tinkering, cloning, designer babies, etc.

The enjoyable part were the characters themselves, I really like Eve, Peabody and of course, the gorgeous (too-good-to-be-true) hubby. I...more

Eve is still my favorite female detective in a fictional work. But this one just wasn't up to the normal standards the 'In Death' books have set. The series is a science fiction series at it's heart and this book certainly helps remind us of that. This may have been one of the funniest of the 'In Deaths' as well. There is character growth. There is so much good stuff here.

But there are very real missed opportunities as well. I want to see the Thanksgiving meal. I want to see the aftermath of the...more

Where do we really come from? What really makes us who we are? Is it what our parents tell us what to do? Is it the environment that makes us who we are? Or is it just DNA? Does our DNA make us think? Make us do things that other people won't do?

What if you had the opportunity to become God, and clone yourself over and over again and become the perfect human being there can ever be? What would you do?

Eve Dallas has a tough case. A very prominant doctor is dead. A doctor that is loved, liked, che...more

It would be nice if the author took longer than an hour to write the last 20 pages of her novels. The writing quality dips dramatically at the end. I know she's trying to create suspense and make it fast paced, but I shouldn't be in suspense about what's actually taking place in the story and it's not fast-paced when I have to re-read a paragraph over again because it barely made sense the first time around.

Also, the lack of consequences after these climactic end-scenes is getting ridiculous at...more

Eve Dallas series hits two dozen, but fresh, fine, suspenseful story awaits in "Origin"!

We continue to be amazed at the quantity and pace at which these "In Death" mystery thrillers continue to emerge from the mind of Nora Roberts writing as JD Robb. And unlike many series that start to get dull and stale after six or seven entries, if anything, Robb's stories are getting better, deserving the switch to hardback that occurred about six books ago. As usual, "Origin" features NYPD Homicide Lt. Eve...more

This is the first Eve Dallas novel I read; I got it used, on impulse, as "an airplane book." I was actually GLAD when the flight was delayed. It gave me time to finish. This is not deep world literature, it is brain candy with a streak of romance that borders on erotica. The science fiction is a bit unrealistic. But I love these books anyway. Eve is a fascinating character with a wonderful snarky internal voice.

I was very aware, though, that I was coming in in the midst of a longer story. The D...more

I love all her titles in this series, but I really loved this one. The witty one liners were totally awesome and the multiple characters interacting were great. The subject matter was creepy and really looked at all angles of what would happen if cloning were to happen. forcing the human race to be perfect by creating perfect human beings? Definite Creep Factor!!!! Deciding how the human race should continue is not up to the hard core science club but to the procreating race it was given.... fla...more

I really enjoyed listening to this book. One of my favorites in the series. It brings up some very interesting questions on the genetics manipulation debate.
Eve is investigating a clearly self defense homicide in a highly reputed reconstructive surgery clinic, when she is called about another homicide at the same clinic. The founder and top surgeon of the clinic is found dead in his office. Signs seem to point to a professional hit. Of course when Eve sinks her teeth into the investigation she l...more

Didn't like this story.. too long winded. Doctors playing God cloning children to be perfect. The doctor's not satisfied making one clone but multiple clones of the same person. Two of these clones killing the doctors to stop the cloning. Uncovering the lab and destroying it before the Feds can step in and take over the case. Secondary story seemed unfinished. Roarke's Irish relatives coming for American Thanksgiving... Eve inviting Mavis, Leonardo, Louise, Charles and Crack for dinner. Yet, the...more

Another winner (well, it's not like I have read one that is a loser!) and one of the few that actually reminds me of science fiction I read years ago. Though the series is set in the future, most of the stories are murder mysteries with some Eve/Roarke steamy action thrown in. I have become so adjusted to reading about the futuristic clothes, vehicles and gadgets that it all seems pretty normal to me now. However, the plot in this particular book revolves around scientific experimentation that i...more

I feel like I'm a broken record in terms of reviewing books in this series. I love the series and everything about it, so at book 24, it's hard to find new adjectives for "fantastic".

There's a reason why Nora Roberts is as successful as she is - she knows how to combine a really good story with characters you will become addicted to. This installment of the "In Death" series delivers that in spades.

While investigating the case of a battered starlet who murdered her abusive boyfriend in self-defe...more

This from a review written by another Goodreads reviewer named Steph:

"One of my least favorite j.d.robb's because the scheme eve undercovers is too grand. though the robb books are all wonderful because they effectively transport you to the future, in this work robb leaves the realm of plausibility or merely does not adequately explain a confusing and rambling plot that seems too large for the reader's imagination too follow, or at least not adequately handled by the author. "

I totally agree.

The 21st book in the In Death series was another success.
In this book Eve faces another case in which technology and medicine are the most important thing. It wasn't one of my favourite cases, but it was curious to know what lies behind the obvious.
It also was the most creepy case I've ever read in any suspense/ policial book. It was kind of scary, really.
J.D.Robb however gets points for being creative and innovative. I've never read any case quite like this one and that's okay really. It was...more
