You know that when a doctor gets killed, and his life seems to be squeaky clean, that something's going on behind the scenes. Eve Dallas, detective extraordinaire, is suspicious and begins digging into the good doctor's past. The resolution to the mystery is satisfyingly creepy, the banter is good, and Eve's incredibly wealthy husband Roarke gives her a fabulous leather coat which made me long for a fabulous leather coat of my very own. (That has absolutely nothing to do with the book, but it...more
Actually my copy is a hardcover - one of those 2/$10 things at Walgreens. Not really important.
I thought I should read at least one book by J.D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts). I'm glad I did. I may have to read more of her books. This one was a page-turner that I couldn't put down. If her others are as good, she's a good author to follow.

In some ways this "in Death" book is possibly the best of the series in that it really emphasizes the futuristic element of the books while maintaining the mystery and romance aspects. The premise on which the book is based is fantastic and hopefully will always remain pure fantasy, but it has you reading as fast as you can to find out what will happen next. Once again you know who the killer is early on, but do you? Only in the most superficial way. As the action develops, you lea...more
The whole series, as regular readers know, is set in the near-future 2150s in New York City. Usually, this is a mechanism to speed up the action without blatantly sacrificing the story's credibility. It avoids much of the real-life tedium of gathering evidence and makes it possible to learn things via computer research that would be difficult to impossible to discover.
Unlike most of the preceding volumes, though, this one features some overtly science-fictional plot twists. But like ...more

I'm good with the fact that this series takes place in a near future, and I slid very easily into the plausible advances Roberts has populated her world with. But I found this story line just over my line into "far-fetched;" more problematically, it's such a massive scope that, along with the ongoing personal story lines of the main characters, it's all just too much. The ending feels rushed and unfinished, and even against character, as Dallas basically just hands the fallout over to ...more
A fantastic installment that pulls Eve, Roark and company into the world of genetic cloning and what else --- murder! What starts out as a typical homicide investigation for Eve quickly spirals into a whirlpool of family secrets, ethics and integrity issues that pull Eve into different directions as she must confront her own ethics and integrity while making judgments on others.

No matter how much I try, Nora Roberts aka JD Robb is not my cup of tea. First of all, this is no mystery since very early on you know where it's going, all you do is follow the detectives hammer the nails in the coffin, and the surprises are mild. It felt more like the author wanted to be on a soap box regarding genetic tinkering, cloning, designer babies, etc.

Eve is still my favorite female detective in a fictional work. But this one just wasn't up to the normal standards the 'In Death' books have set. The series is a science fiction series at it's heart and this book certainly helps remind us of that. This may have been one of the funniest of the 'In Deaths' as well. There is character growth. There is so much good stuff here.

Eve Dallas series hits two dozen, but fresh, fine, suspenseful story awaits in "Origin"!
We continue to be amazed at the quantity and pace at which these "In Death" mystery thrillers continue to emerge from the mind of Nora Roberts writing as JD Robb. And unlike many series that start to get dull and stale after six or seven entries, if anything, Robb's stories are getting better, deserving the switch to hardback that occurred about six books ago. This is the first Eve Dallas novel I read; I got it used, on impulse, as "an airplane book." I was actually GLAD when the flight was delayed. It gave me time to finish. This is not deep world literature, it is brain candy with a streak of romance that borders on erotica. The science fiction is a bit unrealistic. But I love these books anyway. Eve is a fascinating character with a wonderful snarky internal voice.

I really enjoyed listening to this book. One of my favorites in the series. It brings up some very interesting questions on the genetics manipulation debate.
Eve is investigating a clearly self defense homicide in a highly reputed reconstructive surgery clinic, when she is called about another homicide at the same clinic. The founder and top surgeon of the clinic is found dead in his office. Signs seem to point to a professional hit. Of course when Eve sinks her teeth into the investigation...more

Didn't like this story.. too long winded. Doctors playing God cloning children to be perfect. The doctor's not satisfied making one clone but multiple clones of the same person. Two of these clones killing the doctors to stop the cloning. Uncovering the lab and destroying it before the Feds can step in and take over the case. Secondary story seemed unfinished. Roarke's Irish relatives coming for American Thanksgiving... Eve inviting Mavis, Leonardo, Louise, Charles and Crack for dinner. Yet, the...more
This from a review written by another Goodreads reviewer named Steph:
"One of my least favorite j.d.robb's because the scheme eve undercovers is too grand. though the robb books are all wonderful because they effectively transport you to the future, in this work robb leaves the realm of plausibility or merely does not adequately explain a confusing and rambling plot that seems too large for the reader's imagination too follow, or at least not adequately handled by the author. The 21st book in the In Death series was another success.
In this book Eve faces another case in which technology and medicine are the most important thing. It wasn't one of my favourite cases, but it was curious to know what lies behind the obvious.
It also was the most creepy case I've ever read in any suspense/ policial book. It was kind of scary, really.
J.D.Robb however gets points for being creative and innovative. I've never read any case quite like this one and that's o...more

It's Thanksgiving season in the year of 2059 and New York City's top homicide detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas is investigating the murder of Wilfred B. Possible tiny spoiler at the end of 1st paragraph...
I think what I liked so much about this one was twofold. First, as always, Robb's social commentary is superb. She takes issues that are on the burner today and pumps them up for 50 years in the future. And sometimes the look we get is excellent (gun control, birth control, same-sex marriage and interracial relationships a non-issue) and sometimes it's downright scary, as in this book where the focus is on genetics and cloning.

Others than this book deserved 5 stars, just for (my) Roarke alone *cough2*, Origin in Death's story is about the biggest sin and taboo for human life. Which made this book so interesting, and with the basic question : "For the name of science, is it okay to break taboo? Is it okay to break God's law?"
Origin in Death not just about murder or killing. Its more than that. The basic of this story really, really science fiction, and maybe we...more

After just a few chapters, I remembered why I gave up reading this series. It is certainly written well but after the first twenty books in the series the characters no longer interest me. I know that Mavis will be sparkly and mag, Trina will torture Eve with a beauty treatment, Roarke will be perfect and know how to do anything and everything, Eve will be cranky but brilliant, etc. The only reason I lasted through the first twenty books is because I liked Peabody and McNab’s relationship dev...more

Does the sex in these bother anyone? Not the fact that there is sex, I am no prude. But that it is soooo fake?
It is bad tomance novel sex... The girl (Eve Dallas) always gets off 2, 3 or 4 times...
Anyone here in or ever been in a relationship? I have been in a few, and dont get me wrong, I am fairly experienced in the intimate arts, and sure... I have had time when I might get a girl off 2 or 3 times in a single round. But not EVERY TIME... Gimme a break, I know JD Robb, aka...more

Dr. Wilifred Icove, A famous reconstructive surgeon is murdered cooly and efficiently - a scalpel to the heart - right in his office.
Soon after, the surgeon's son, WIll Jr., is also murdered in the exact same manner. Was it the beautiful woman seen leaving the good Dr.'s premises right before his death? Was Will junior's wife involved?

I had really low expectations for this book, thankfully. I read the sneak peek and I wasn't looking forward to being dealt with human cloning, DNA and all the scientific mumbo jumbo.
There wasn't exactly any thrill or viable suspense in this book. The only part that had me gripping my Amazon Kindle was when Icove's "lair" was set to self-destruct mode.
The real killer was way too obvious. Nothing new there as I kind of already had an inkling to "what it is"...more

I started this book a few times and finally kept reading because I didn't have anything else to pick up. It was... ok. It was part sci-fi, part mystery. Set in the future (2060 ish), it was a different kind of read for me. I'm guessing it is a book in the middle of a series, because I felt lost with the characters at some points. Don't know that it is a series I would search out - but if another was readily available and there was nothing else on my list - I would likely pick it up...

This one was really well written and made you think and question. It was more suspense than romance, but the bits between Eve and Roarke were as usual heart warming. I loved the interaction between the characters and how especially Eve has developed personally and professionally. Think my favorite bit was Eve driving through the streets of New York trying to come up with insults to dish out to Sommerset, LMAO! All in all not my favorite In Death book, but definitely up in the top 5.
This is book #21 in the series and I have read all the prior books. Murder, romance, friendship and the rip roaring finish to the end of the story will make this a great read.
Eve and company in the year 2059 have some amazing toys that they use to solve the mysteries and her husband work together as a team which is nice to see.
This book addresses a topic that several people in science are in a quandary over. Give it a read and we can discuss it!

For the most part, I love this entire series; however, I didn't particularly care for this book mainly because the plot became a bit convoluted at times. I found myself reading back a few pages every time I resumed reading.
That said, I still gave the book three stars because of the dialogue and the character development.
In my opinion, this is a must read series for any lover of futuristic and/or suspense/mystery novels.

She wrapped herself around him, and because she could, with him, let the tears fall on his shoulder.....
Eve and Roarke's relationship seems to bloom deeper with each and every book. The longer they're together, the more at ease Eve is with the comfort Roarke gives her. The murder/mystery plot in this book had a little more of a sci-fi feel to it, imo.....but it was still a good and interesting read.

This is already the 21st book in a highly addictive series and the quality always stays on the same high level. Origin in Death is actually one of my favorite ones because it gives you one possible outcome of cloning in the future, and it's a chilling thought. Anyway, as always, I'm already looking forward to the next book.
