As the story unfolds the reader is introduced to atrocities performed over a span from WWII to the present, centering in particular around Bosnia. With a sudden leap into the content of the story, as the characters watch a horrific video of ethnic cleansing, I found myself unsure whether I would be able to read it, but was surprised to find it grab my attention firmly. I think it is a duty to us all to become informed, preferably with the hope that there will someday be an end to crimes against ...more

What is the gravest breach? Is it a breach of national security? A breach of peace? A breach of contract? Or a breach of confidentiality, of trust?

That is one of the things that James Macomber explores in his third John Cann book and newest novel, A Grave Breach.

John Cann would never have agreed to defend a war criminal in a court of law, especially not after seeing the atrocities he performed during the Balkan war, if it hadn't been for one thing: Arthur Matsen - his boss and a man whom he resp

Cann, who is an associate in a law firm, is asked by his friend and mentor, Arthur Matsen, to travel to Germany and defend a war criminal, Dubran Mribic, who appears in a video savagely torturing and murdering several people. Before assuming this new task, he goes to visit Janie Reston, a woman beaten and left with serious disabilities for her association with him, a fact he will feel guilty of his entire life. Both Matseh and Cann have assumed the responsibility of providing her with the best c ...more

It did seem that a WWII revenge is a bit of a stretch, since the people involved would have to be so old. I had trouble imaging these men in their late 80's or 90's being quite so able to get around as they did. Even so, the story of the events in the
