Expresso Bongo is a superb short story that takes place in the late 50's in Soho London. In fact it maybe the ultimate Soho London narrative.

It's about a manager who discovers a pop singer at one of the local coffee clubs. It's a fascinating piece of social history - and in fact inspired Rolling Stones' producer and manager Andrew Loog Oldham to do what he does so well. I would also imagine that this would be essential mod literature as well.
