Technically, there are no elements of actual magic in this, but it skirts the edges closely enough that you will find it filed there.
The main character is sort of a magician's apprentice, in that his "uncle" is a traveling stage magician, and not a very good one. Jago, the nephew and protagonist, is better at it, but their life on the road is one of trickery and thievery, more than honest entertainment.

The cover art is not only hideous, but it also gives you no idea what the book is really about. This is a fantastic historical mystery involving conspiracy, an inheritance, a fake uncle, an apprentice magician, the daughter of a silver thief, and a boat trip to Brazil. It was great. Ignore the cover - I barely managed to, but am quite glad I did!
