Oops. I ordered this thinking it was non-fiction. I am interested in this topic -- deformity, monstrous birth, etc -- in a historical and sociological way, but not so much in fiction. Also, I tend to prefer my fiction plot-heavy and this, despite being labeled a "novel" is more a collection of quite short pieces on a theme: Different people in different times and cultures reflecting on being/meeting/thinking about individuals with physical differences. i LOVE this book. i bought it years ago at Strand. it's absolutely fantastic. it goes through time, from ancient Egypt to Coney Island's heyday, detailing the lives and loves of people born with deformities or as a unique and admired being, depending on the world's viewpoint. it's semi-biographical (most of the people were real people, others are characters based on accounts of people with the same conditions) and very very interesting.
