Caroline Thonger has researched her family history thoroughly. It must have been glorious to trace the good years and heartbreaking to read through the devastation of WWII. The heroine, the banker's daughter and author's grandmother, is engaging and courageous as she lives a glamourous European life and then an exiled life in Peru. In spite of her lack of funds and hardships she makes the most of the situation, exploring the country in often difficult conditions. She is at her most touching when ...more
