Mac is warm and entertaining. He becomes an old friend with the turn of every page, the connection is there. Kate is more aloof, almost hanging in the background, I liked her but the connection was lacking, more development would have made a world of difference in my lukewarm response to her. Mac's newfound career as a PI is interesting to witness as he sheds his military career and ways to the background. His humor will make you smile.

The narrative is layered creating tons of action, never dul

What a great new series! E.Michael Helms knows how to reel-in readers with his delightful blend of savvy wit, southern grit, Semper Fi integrity, and wet-your-whistle suspense. This second installment featuring U.S. Marine, retired, Mac McClellan (come hither P.I.) is every bit as enthralling and tightly crafted as Deadly Catch: A Mac McClellan Mystery - except with a bit more polish!

Mac is one of those characters of delightful contradictions: affably flawed, slightly old-fashioned, aloofly hip

I picked this novel up to “just read a couple of chapters” before bed one night. The next thing I knew the sun was coming up and it was time for work. Helms jumps right into this story from the first sentence and doesn’t let up. It’s like being back with an old friend. He had me mesmerized, trying to unravel the mystery right up until the very last moment.

Helms has an approachable, inviting style. I love the way that he writes in the first person, allowing the main character to tell you his st

Have you ever seen a ghost? Well, according to Mac’s girlfriend, Kate Bell, it wasn’t a ghost. She really saw her ex-boyfriend, Wes Harrison, who has supposedly been dead for twelve years. At first Mac tries to reason with her – maybe it was just someone who resembled Wes — but she was sure it was Wes. The bodies were never found for Wes and two of his buddies who’d been in a boating accident. Mac McClellan agrees to check into it. He has a couple of contacts with the police. He is a retired ...more

There are two kinds of great detective stories in my opinion. The all knowing detective who figures everything out and makes you feel foolish at the end, and the bumbling amateur who happens on clues by accident.
I can't pick a favorite but it is fun to mix it up with some of both.
I would classify Deadly Ruse into more of the second category. While not exactly bumbling, Mac comes by his information mostly through the good will of others and happenstance.
Mac is a well drawn and finely fleshout c

This is the second book in the series. Mac is studying to legally become the private investigator he's been acting like. His sleuthing endangers not only his life but other lives precious to him. His girlfriend, Kate Bell, involves him in this mystery when she thinks she's seen a ghost. Wes Harrison, her old boyfriend who she thought died years ago in a boating accident, is not only alive, but he is involved in some pretty shady activities. Kate and Mac begin work to find out what's really

Ghosts of boyfriend's past? Check. Diamond smuggling? Check. A Texas orphanage? Casinos? Check and check. Yes, all the seemingly random elements that make up a satisfying Mac Mcclellan are present yet again in Deadly Ruse. But it all begins when Kate Bell, Mac's girlfriend, spots her ex-boyfriend outside a movie theater. Only problem is, he's been dead for twelve years. Mac, at his girlfriend's insistence, looks into things, and is quickly drawn into another complicated puzzle to solve. . . if ...more

This is a fun private investigator mystery. I like the protagonists, Mac McClellen and his girlfriend Kate Bell and to me that's important. It also takes place in the Florida panhandle with which I am reasonably familiar and I think that's fun. Mac is a retired Marine sergeant and circumstances have pushed him into the PI business. In this yarn Kate is sure she has seen her ex boyfriend in a local

“Deadly Ruse: A Mac McClellan Mystery” By E. Michael Helms has a plot that is as tight as a night of bondage. The storyline swirls wickedly enticing the reader into deep involvement in the solution of why Mac’s girlfriend, the fetching and fiery Kate, has seen her long dead lover with the eerily mismatched color eyes alive and well as she and Mac exit a movie theatre. Mac does not see him because he bumps into his busty, red-haired companion and his eyes are drawn to her abundant cleavage. Kate ...more

Mac may not have figured out what he's doing with his life for the future yet, but he's prepared to enjoy the present with Kate. What starts out as a pleasant night out starts a journey into Kate's previous relationships back in Destin. He gets to meet the rest of the family, including old family friends, but not exactly the way he planned. Unfortunately, instead of bringing them closer, the more information Mac is able to come up with, the farther Kate seems to drift. Romance aside, the more ...more

Throw together maybe-dead, maybe guilty of something characters in a twisting, turning plot and you get a "...damn stewpot... so full it was in danger of spilling over" in E. Michael Helms' second and newest Mac McClellan mystery. If it's possible, this second installment in the series is even more intriguing than the first.

When Mac's lady friend Kate is sure she's seen an old beau -- a supposedly dead old beau -- Mac can't help but investigate. Like the fisherman Mac is, he casts and reels, and

Deadly Ruse is the second of the Mac McClellen mysteries by E. Michael Helms. I honestly loved this book as much as I liked the first. the second mystery brings back some known characters from the Deadly Catch. Returning to Parkerville, the mystery of Kate’s lost boyfriend goes much further than anyone realized.
The boyfriend’s reappearance tests Kate and Mac’s relationship. Mac cannot understand how Kate can believe her ex is alive after more than 10 years. When murder attempts on Kate and Mac’

Missed ya Mac. I'm addicted to this series - read the entire book in three sittings, couldn't put it down.

When leaving a showing of the classic movie Dead Men Walking, Kate spots an ex boyfriend - a much altered ex boyfriend - who happens to be dead. As the story unfolds, Kate's past and present intertwine and Mac is drawn into the action and danger. The story action ranges between Georgia and Florida as past and present collide in an explosive finale.

I was drawn into the mystery from the first page. I was intrigued that Kate swore she saw her supposedly dead ex. As the mystery progressed, I found it impossible to put down. Mac is a retired marine still figuring out what to do with his life besides drinking beer and scotch, fishing, and spending time with his girlfriend Kate. I love the fact that he's just a regular guy. He stumbles onto clues, follows leads, and does his best to fit the pieces together, though he sometimes makes mistakes. I ...more

Kate is so insistent that Mac promises to investigate. He has a few contacts with the local police.
The more he discovers the bigger and more dangerous the mystery gets.

Deadly Ruse is a mystery that dives straight in. Mac is out on a date with his girlfriend Kate, when she thinks she sees a face from the past. The only bad thing is her ex-boyfriend is supposed to be dead. Mac doesn't immediately believe her, but he changes his mind after he considers it. After all, she's never lied to him before, and what reason would she have to?

Wes was supposed to have died in a boating accident, but his body was never found. It's up to Mac to unravel the mystery and help to

Great book! I didn't read the first book in the series, but I was able to pick up everything from this one. Mac is a veteran pursuing a career as a PI investigating a sighting of his girlfriend's ex at a movie showing. Lots of adventure and great location (FL panhandle & Georgia). While there were some unanswered questions about a few characters whom were thought to be still around, I can only guess that there will be another sequal. Some of the female characters were a bit cliched but ...more

Mac McClellan has a pretty good life. He retired from the Marines after 24 years, he's almost learned to ask instead of order and he has a great looking girlfriend, Kate Bell. He's pursuing his private investigator's license and everything is hunky-dory. Then Kate claims she saw her ex-boyfriend, Wes. So, big deal, right? Well, actually, it is because Wes died a few years back! So, of course, Mac and Kate have to investigate and then... Full disclosure: I received an advance copy of this book ...more

This story gripped me from the very beginning and I couldn't wait for Mac McClellan to sort out the clues and save his sweetheart, Kate Bell's, sanity. The plot and pacing were excellent and kept me reading well into the night to see how Mac would sort out Kate's dilemma and bring her some peace. Mac is no stranger to trouble, but this time, he's bitten off (maybe) more than he can chew. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but Mac's investigation is a clever and fascinating odyssey. Retired marine, private eye, sexy girls, whiskey, drugs, diamonds, casinos, the good ol’ South… what more could you ask for in a genre crime novel?

I enjoyed my second adventure with Mac McClennan. Despite the self-depricating B-movie references to its own plot points, closing a Mac McClennan book always leaves me wanting more Mac.
