Oh yes, Divine Healing is pretty big in my tradition. It is one of four cardinal doctrines, right up there with Salvation, The Baptism in the Spirit and the Second Coming of Christ. I fondly remember extended times of prayer on Sunday nights when I was little. I’d walk around helping my dad lay hands on people kneeling at the front pews, often my little hand on a polyester clad buttock. I don’t know how many were praying for healing but I remember the desperation with which these old saints More...

I loved this book. Jack Deere explains both Biblical and experientially the gifts of the Spirit. It made me realize how many passages of Scripture I have overlooked. I've never had a cessationist mindset, and yet, I find myself at times living out that mindset in practice without realizing it. This book made me hungry for more of God and the Holy Spirit.

Great book. A must read for anyone interested in sorting out the cessationist/noncessatonist debate. He addresses points put forward by John McArthur and others who hold strong disagreements with his position. He examines the broad Biblical narritive to defend his argument. Quite readable. Wish I'd read it earlier. I found it persuasive.

A very readable defense of Charismatic theology, from a former Dallas Seminary professor, although I can't say I'm convinced yet.

Deals well with gifts given by the Spirit, empowered through obedience by people in accordance with God's providence.

A great, not too heavy, read about some amazing first-hand stories. We serve an incredible God!

An excellent argument for the existence and use of the miraculous gifts of the Spirit in the present. It spoke to me as a saint, sinner, and student. I should have read this 10 years ago!

I read this a while ago, but I remember that I really liked the theological content, like the Scriptural arguments against cessationism, as well as the sections about practical concerns (why God doesn't always act, what to do to avoid fraud and exaggeration). I remember that he described some cool things that had happened in churches where he'd been and that he didn't spend the entire book telling stories, which I appreciated. It made him seem more honest.

Jack Deere explains the spiritual gifts like no one else. He has a Presbyterian upbringing but a Charismatic awakening. He fills this pseudo-theological book with stories and Scripture references to argue his point about how the Holy Spirit is a relevant being today.

Any person wanting to learn more the power of the Holy Spirit and what it means for Christians today should read this.

i loved reading about the experiences and the encounters Deere and others had regarding The Holy Spirit. i browsed over most of the references to scripture that he provided to sort of 'prove' The Holy Spirit is very much alive, and very much making himself known to us daily. i'm already down with that.

See review for Surprised by the Voice of God -- I think I mixed them up. Regardless, both were good -- I read them back to back about 7 years ago and felt like they gave me a context for communicating with God in my day-to-day life (the kind of christianity I signed up for -- but hadn't really experienced).

I've been exploring the depths of the holy spirit over the last couple of years. This was a great introduction book and I'm so thankful for the friend who let me borrow this one! Would recommend to anyone who has questions about what the holy spirit looks like in our lives today. :) AWESOME!

Jack Deere does a good job dissecting many of the standard arguments used by cessationists. I still have a lot of questions, but he has driven me back to the Scriptures and caused me to ask different questions than I had before.
