'Seance' by Tinsley Collins, is a veritable chocolate box of surprises. Seguing smoothly between humour, mystery, romance, and even flirting on occasion with Grand Giugnol, this book is beautifully paced and difficult to put down. Collins' characters - especially the painfully shy, repressed Theo - are engaging and wonderfully flawed. The author handles well the double narrative, moving between 1890s and 1990s London, and at times I was put in mind of the narrative arc of A.S. Byatt's ...more

Admittedly I enjoy books with a paranormal element, but try and avoid those with a “Dare you read this alone!” approach which has no appeal at all. For that reason this one seemed more up my street and in fact I could not have chosen better as the introduction of the ghostly element is subtle and strangely believable. The two main protagonists are Theo who owns a run down bookshop in 1990s Notting Hill and Mary in 1890 Clerkenwell, and the connection between is them that Theo comes across her ...more
