When Lightning Strikes (1-800-Where-R-You #1)
by
Meg Cabot
Jess Mastriani has never been what you'd call a typical Midwestern teenager—her extracurricular activities, instead of cheerleading or 4-H, include fist-fights with the football team and month-long stints in detention. A part of Jess would like to be the prom queen her mother has always envisioned her being, but another part is secretly counting the days until she's saved ...more

Meg Cabot is one of my favorite authors, and I continue to be surprised by how well she does in such a variety of genres. This is the first in her 1-800-WHERE-R-YOU series of young adult paranormals. The tone is pretty similar to that of most of Cabot's other books, and her blog - you get the definite feeling that she writes the way she speaks. When Lightning Strikes tells the story of a teen girl who is hit by lightning and acquires the ability to look at a picture of a person before bed and...more
I bought the bind ups of the 1-800-Where-Are-You series a while back but never got around to starting them until this past week. Boy, let me tell you I totally regret not starting them early! Once again Meg Cabot amazes me with her great understanding of the teenage mind. If I remember correctly, I picked up Safe House (book three) years ago, but was really young when I read it. Not only did I read it out of order, but I never finished it. I'm so glad I picked up book one because this series wil...more
16 year old Jess Mastriani has problems: She has a crush on guy that no one close to her approves of, her brother is schizophrenic, her mother makes her wear matching dresses, and her best friend is now constantly insisting in a lot of exercise just because of one "fat" comment made towards her; oh, and on top of that, she gets hit by lightening and now every morning she wakes up knowing where missing children are located.

Jessica Mastriani is a detention-lifer: not because she's a "Bad Kid", but because she isn't afraid to punch-out anyone who talks smack about her brother, her best friend, or herself. While walking home from detention with her best friend Ruth, Jessica is struck by lightning and here's where our story really begins. Thanks to that lightning strike, Jess can now locate missing persons. However, Jess learns the hard way that not everyone wants to be found and that others want her 'gif...more
As anyone that's been following my reviews for some time knows, I'm a fan of Meg Cabot.
I like her tough girl heroines. They're smart, sassy (and whiny), and sometimes physically violent. Jess, the protagonist of this series, has a lot in common with Suze of the Mediator series. While Suze has grown up with her gift of talking to ghosts, Jess has her gift thrust upon her by a lightening strike. When she wakes up the next morning, she knows the location of two kids that she had see...more

I stumbled on Meg Cabot's 1-800-Where-R-You series in the library and it really caught my interest. I have always been fascinated by mistery and fantasy books.
Th main protagonist in this book is Jess Mastriani. She is a misunderstood teen who has anger issues, according to her guidance counselor. When Jess was walking home from her daily detention, she was struck by lightning. But, she survive- she seems fine and feels fine. After the incident her life is changed forever when she ...more

I really loved this series maybe even more than the Mediator, which i know is strange because just about EVERYONE loved the Mediator series..... Anyway, i think its great that When Lightning Strikes and Code Name Cassandra (the sequel) are being rereleased as Vanished even if the new title is a bit misleading. The 1-800 books where great but not that many people know about them and i think the new title and cover will appeal to the YA audience a lot now.

Okay, maybe Cabot is really bad at writing teenage girls. I could not find anything likeable or enjoyable about her main character (similar to how i felt about her Mediator girl). the story is enjoyable and has real potential. Her main character is quick to over react and I am tired of Cabots grrrls with anger issues. While I respect a girl who can throw a mean punch and isn't afraid to take on a guy three times her size, I also really want to care what happens to her.
The thing I appreciate the most here, especially as I've read more and more books in the genre, is that the author doesn't mess around with delaying movement in the story. Every time I read a book or see a tv series with a character who spends most of the time procrastinating or trying to figure out some vague vision they've had, I think of this series. The ability is simple: character goes to sleep, character wakes up knowing exactly how to find someone whose picture she looked at that day be...more
I am a nice person. Rarely say bad things about others and I quite generous when I criticise something.
However, in this book, I give it 5 stars whole heartedly. Seriously. With all my heart. Meg, one of your best series.
First of all the heroine. Well, I just adore her. Even though she's a bit typicall in the "no feminism" area, I have to admit that she's the best of them. Wity and sarcastic, she loves bikes, has an opinion for them and is generally a bit of bad girl - thou...more

I loved these as a teenager. They are not a bad re-read as an adult either. In fact, they are kind of a refreshing break from age-relevant fiction I read now. The paranormal stuff is relatively straight forward, love is uncomplicated and the romance is young. I like this series (and the Mediator series). The writing is solid with strong first person pov characters. If there are cliches, they are well executed. these books also benefit i think from being written ahead for the most part of the r...more
This was a really quick read but highly enjoyable. I thought the characters could use some filling out, there were quite a few important people apart from Jess, including the love interest Rob and her best friend, Ruth, who was very present at the beginning and then disappeared. In the next couple of books I would like to see Ruth given a chance and of course I really want to know what happens between Jess and Rob. While Rob is from the bad side of town, rides a bike and is on probation (for som...more
I first read this book when I was in high school, but it has remained one of my favorites. I was first drawn to the characters. Jess, who is tough but still manages to be both vulnerable and relatable. Rob, the mysterious bad boy who is so easy to like. Ruth, the best friend everyone wants to have. Douglas, who has problems but is perhaps the most lovable character simply for the relationship between him and Jess.

Well, this book probably is more like a two and a half stars but today is a generous day. My biggest beef with the book is that the characters swear near as much as they breathe. I really don't think it is all that necessary. The story itself is an interesting idea. What if you went through some tragic, usually fatal, accident and wound up with a "super" power. Now what would you do since it came on all sudden like? Especially, if you are a sixteen year old and have a penchant fo...more
This book is about this girl named Jessica. She is always getting in trouble cause of her violence towards the football team; whenever they say something bad about her slightly heavy friend Ruth, she would beat them up even though they're twice her size. She didn't mind detention since her crush, a senior guy named Rob was also there. One day, Ruth wanted to walk home from school so Jessica went with her. In the middle of walking home, Jessica and Ruth got stuck in a storm and Jessica got struck...more
When Lightening Strikes, by Meg Cabot, is one of my other favorite books known to man. It's an 8 point AR test and is a simple thrill. Reading each page was a freaking turn. Though, I do have to admit, that when I first picked it up, I thought I wasn't going to like it. But now, after I finished the entire series of 1-800-WhereAreYou I want to read them all over again and again until I can't anymore. Or at least until I find another fabulous series that makes me smile and laugh, yell at the book...more
A good introduction to the series.
Jess and Rob = Love?
kidding
Ruth wants to walk home because some jerk called her fat.
So she comes back to walk with Jess and on their way out of school one of Jess's detention buddies asked Jess if she wanted a ride, which she had to refused because she was with Ruth.
And that's how it starts.
I liked it.

What can I say other than I love Meg Cabot. I ordered this series from Barnes and Noble because I loved her Mediator series written for teens, and was hoping for something similar. I enjoyed this book, and thought that the concept was great. A teenage girl is struck by lightning on her way home from school and the only thing she has to show for it immediately after is a red star shaped burn mark on her chest. The next morning however she wakes up knowing the whereabouts of two missing ...more
Fun read with trademark Cabot sense-of-humor. Jessica gets struck by lightning and finds she has the power to know where missing children/people are located. This makes her terribly interesting to the U.S. military. When she rescues one boy who was actually abducted for his safety by his mother and was living a happy life, Jess tries to make amends. What follows is a cross-midwest chase and rescue by motorcycle and fellow detentionee. Jess is a fun character - tongue-in-cheek, smart, slightl...more

I hate Meg Cabot. she is a terrible writer. she doesn't write sentinces, she writes fragments and then puts more fragments at the end to clear up what was perfectly clear in the first place. she leaves out things that are important. she doesn't describe stuff. her prose stinks. how on EARTH she became a best selling and popular author, i have no idea.

I adore Jess. I adore this book. Jess is the sort of I'll-beat-you-up-if-you-try-anything girl, and I just ADORE her. ADORE! DO YOU HEAR ME?
It's totally Meg Cabot. And even though this supposedly hot guy I kept picturing as a weird ugly hobo guy, oh well. He was dreamy anyway. Which sounds a little disturbing, maybe? Although I am rather suspicious about... *clears throat* Oh, never mind. Just read it, and read it now. (:

I really liked this. For one, I liked how the girls are so spunky in her novels (i.e. The Mediator series) Also, of course, her trademark use of the set words "I mean" which she uses profusely in her stories. If you've read them, you know what 'I mean'. And who doesn't like her choice of "hotties"- just reading her descriptions can make a girl flush, and not from embarrassment! I like the sass, love the crass, and if you haven't read it yet, you are a deprived being that shou...more
I’ve decided that it really doesn’t matter what Meg Cabot writes about, she’s such a talented author that I’m pretty much guaranteed to like any of her books. Meg Cabot novels have solid, fast-paced plots, wonderful characters with unique voices and great dialogue. Throw in Ms. Cabot’s patented humor and you’ve got a book like When Lightning Strikes - truly entertaining.
Jessica Mastriani is a pretty typical high school sophomore. Well, typical with a few issues (anger managemen...more
