FRom BBC Radio 4 Extra - The Return of Sherlock Holmes:
The Baker Street sleuth investigates who's following music teacher Violet Smith. Stars Clive Merrison and Michael Williams.

In this story, Holmes is contacted by Miss Violet Smith of Farnham, Surrey about an unusual turn in her and her mother’s lives. Violet’s father has recently died, and left his wife and daughter rather poor. However, a notice appeared in the newspaper not much later inquiring as to their whereabouts. Answering it, they met Mr. Carruthers and Mr. Woodley, the former a pleasant enough man, but the latter a bully. They had come from South Africa, where they had known Violet’s uncle Ralph Smith, who ...more

Frankly, I was disappointed in this book. One comes to expect a certain level of superiority from a mystery written by an author so renowned as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and that level was not achieved for me in this book. I gave this book 2 out of 5 stars because this book was depressingly predictable for a mystery book, with all of the villains easily spotted and the whole plot playing out in the most boring and unimaginative way possible. Honestly, the only reason I didn't give the book one sta ...more

In spite of all the great story I have read about, Sherlock this one was not up to the mark.

It was as a light case even for Sherlock himself that is why, Watson is rather more engaged in chores of the story.

Over and above, reading it wont take centuries, so take it read it enjoy it.

Very intriguing. As usual, Arthur Conan Doyle's story retains its interest and prose over 100 years after it is written.

Mr. Sherlock Holmes just keeps digging his proverbial "pipe" into deeper and potentially more dangerous crimes isn't he? With The Adventure of The Solitary Cyclist, Mr. Holmes and the ever-faithful John Watson attempt to discover the singular problems of the beautiful and athletic Violet Smith.

All-in-all, this tale provides a fresh breath of country air. A dash of danger and love triangles, and perhaps most importantly, plenty of snooping and deducing to go around!

Goed geschreven. Meer heb ik er eigenlijk niet over te zeggen.

I liked it mostly, but I didn't like this shit where they were all arguing about who would get to 'own' Violet. Violet can bloody well choose whoever she wants to, or doesn't want to marry, no more of this abduction and forced marriage please.

The women surrounding Sherlock Holmes are always mysterious and this case at first seems innocent and unimportant, becomes an adventure for him and Dr. Watson.

This story seemed more messy than the others. It all fell a bit flat for me, it was still engaging but didn't feel up to the standard of the others.

I was very intrigued by this one... don't like it when Sherlock yells on Watson though!

Getting a bit ho-hum with Holmes. It is getting close to time for a break.

Arthur Conan Doyle was born the third of ten siblings on 22 May 1859 in Edinburgh, Scotland. His father, Charles Altamont Doyle, was born in England of Irish descent, and his mother, born Mary Foley, was Irish. They were married in 1855.

Although he is now referred to as "Conan Doyle", the origin of this compound surname (if that is how he meant it to be understood) is uncertain. His baptism record
