Cute, enjoyable retelling of The Frog Prince. The story follows De Fawg Pin (horrible speech problem from a large frog tongue), after he is turned into a frog by the hag. He learns to be a frog from a girl frog (Jade, whom he names at one point because frogs don't usually have names.) They make a frog family which is also unusual since frogs don't form attachments. Once your egg is fertilized you are on your own. By trying to save the life of his son Jimmy, Pin is accidentally turned back into a...more
I think The Prince of the Pond is aimed at younger readers, perhaps an 8-10 age range. And with that in mind, I was surprised at how detailed and sometimes poignant a story Napoli was able to tell in only 151 pages of point-14 type. This is the story of Pin, the frog prince, told from the perspective of a female frog he meets in the pond. The narrator spends the story trying to teach Pin what it is to be a frog, and in the process he teaches her a bit of what it is to be human. So let’s dive rig...more
When a spiteful witch turns a handsome prince into a frog, he doesn’t know what to do – literally. Jade, a friendly green frog, happens upon the prince shortly after he is transformed. At first, the prince doesn’t know that he is a frog. Once he realizes that he is one, he doesn’t know how to be one. He can’t hop correctly, he won’t eat bugs, and his new tongue even makes it difficult for him to speak. This trouble is reflected in the humorous way he speaks; he calls himself de Fawg Pin because...more
GAAAAHHHH … Okay, it was driving me crazy trying to remember what this book was called. My third or fourth grade teacher read it to us … maybe more than one teacher read it. I don't remember. I loved this book, though––a very sweet story about how, before he turns back into a person, the frog prince goes off and has a relationship with a girl frog. Actually, the end was very sad because he turned back into a person. ANYWAY I really loved this book when I was a kid. Great concept, nice story. I l...more

2003- Now, this was not a terrible book, but it wasn't great either. It starts when Jade, a frog who tells the story, discovers a strange new frog. It's a prince who has been transformed by an old hag. We never learn why, so that bugged me. Jade calls the prince ""Pin"", for the prince cannot speak correctly with his new tongue, which can be annoying sometimes. I found the pictures to be a nice addition. Overall, a cute story that later veers away and becomes serious...which ruins the whole thin...more

Also a find in JFiction. Loved this! The pictures are great and the heart is wonderful. It's also reassuring to me that Napoli can not only weave a good yarn, but she can also have a happy ending. (Breath was not such a "happily ever after...") I would love, love, love it if she filled it in and at least made it a YA read. As it was, it was pushing 100 pages and that was with the pictures. FInd this one and pick it up for a quick read. It would be lovely as a read-aloud.
What a fun book! The frog prince, or "De Fawg Pin" as he's known due to some difficulty with certain consonants, has a happy frog life with his frog wife and little froglings before being turned back into a prince. He even manages to change the way frogs interact with each other. This would be a fun book for a science class to read if they were studying frogs. There's definitely a lot of frog information in here.
I thought this book was a fairly cute retelling of the well-known frog prince fairy tale. He is turned into a frog my an old lady but optimistically decides to make the best of it. He is taught how to be a frog by a female frog and together they have a family. Although it was a cute story, there was nothing about it that made me fall in love with it, or anything special worth pointing out.
Your never too old for child like fairy tales. This book is what made me grow into the bookworm I am today. This book goes deeper into the story. It's about the prince's point of view as a frog. A female frog hops by and see him. To her he is the biggest dummy for being in the wild open, frogs don't do that. She teaches him frog values and he teaches her human values, like love.
Great for a read aloud! Students enjoy the fairy tale aspect of the story, being that a prince is turned into a frog...however, there is less emphasis placed on the fairy and more on the tale. Basically, the story starts off like any other fairy tale, but the plot shines through and takes the reader on the main character's personal journey. Fun story!
I came across this book serendipitously in my search for some fiction to supplement this month's habitat theme of "rivers/lakes/ponds." As it turned out, this was more than I could have hoped for. Not only was it a delightful and bittersweet fairy tale (a retelling of the frog-prince), but also a fairly accurate lesson in general pond life and frogs in particular. We all (Stayc included) really enjoyed it.
As a side note: I'd never heard of the author before, but when my husband saw the book he s...more

Prince of the Pond is a nice retelling of The Frog Prince. In this story the prince (Pin) is turned into a “very unfroglike frog” and meets up with a female frog who narrates the story. She is instrumental in teaching Pin the ways of the pond and helping him adapt to being a frog. Pin is not your typical frog; he doesn’t like flies and is not afraid of turtles. What I find interesting about this story is that the frog prince in every way appears the same as those around him, yet it is the way th...more

Charming and delightful story. A princess' view of the a classic story. Great for young readers, offers lots of extras - topics to talk about off point from the main story line. Funny, a little sad, and very engaging.
Okay, I must explain my rating. The first third of the book, I give two stars for pure weirdness. Then, up until the last two pages, I give four stars for witty writing and cute storyline. Here we get to the important part. I give the last two pages of that book a BIG FAT ZERO STARS! What a CRAPPY ending. Ugh. Sorely disappointed.
This book is quite short and has a few illustrations. But hey, it all comes down to that horrid ending.
So I give this book one star, because the middle was good. Okay...more

This one struck my heart in a way the frog prince story never has before. Well done -- very well done.
The Prince of the Pond is a new and interesting take on the frog prince fairy tale. Napoli has chosen to focus her story after the prince has been turned into a frog up until he is turned back into a human. 'De fawg pin' must learn how to swim, jump, talk, eat *gulp* bugs, and above all, become a frog. He changes other frogs' perceptions about themselves and enjoys a sweet love story. Additionally, the author throws in a lot of science about frogs, pond life, and amphibians -- what I call sneaky...more
