Sons of Heaven is an epic novel set against the backdrop of one of modern history's most haunting events: the Tiananmen Square Massacre. In June 1989, the world watched in horror as China's military was mobilized to suppress a student movement that stood for peaceful democracy. Hundreds were killed; others say thousands. No one knows for sure. But the image that remains mo...more

I stumbled across this book rather by accident but decided to read it because it looked somewhat compelling. This is a novel containing a fictionalized account of the Tiananmen Square incident. The story itself is told through the eyes of 3 different people so you get more of a whole perspective. We hear the story through the dissident protester (younger brother), through the soldier called into Beijing to help squash the rebellion (older brother) and through the eyes of the old Chinese ruler De...more

Hits the ground running... right into the Tiananmen Square massacre of 1989. Wow. Cheng's writing is very stunning. This book takes the perspective of three people: "The soldier" and big brother, Lu. "The dissident" and little brother, Xiao-Di. "The Comrade" and leader of China, Deng Xiaopeng. I almost feel like I've met Xiao-Di before -- very real, very relatable (even Deng Xiaopeng is made very real!). This should be read by anyone wanting a dose of easily readable history of China. I think it...more

Membaca kisah tentang negri Cina memang sangat menarik.
Saya membayangkan bagaimana asik nya melakukan...more

Accidentaly I got this book years ago from QB bookstore. This book is good to read. Story telling about 2 characters, Xiao Di and his elder brother Lu, with Tiananmen Tragedy. The conflict occured between them when they seperated and find themself that they stood in different line. Xiao-Di stood with the demonstrant and his elder brother Lu fought back for militery. A brief background of those characters are, Xiao-Di got scholarship continue his study in United States which make a different pers...more

I bought this book on Jakarta Book Fair, June 2007. If you go to major bookstores, the prize is about IDR55000, or you may save 20% if you directly order it from the publisher. Lucky me again, I only had to pay IDR20000 on the book fair.

The story is fictitious, but the background is real, kind of historical story I like to explore. It's about the life of a Chinese boy graduated from America and found himself involved in student movement in Tiananmen Square, Beijing, June 1989. The interesting pa...more

A novel inspired by the young Chinese man who faced down a tank during the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989. The story is told from the widely varying perspectives of that imagined character, his brother (a soldier in the People's Army who is particularly ruthless in dealing with the dissidents), and Deng Xiaoping, the reformist ruler who, at age 85, ordered the crackdown. Only the dissident's chapters, however, are told in first person. The story is interesting, but not, somehow, as moving as...more

Terrence Cheng is a master storyteller - through this story, we come to know three major characters in the confrontation at Tiannamen Square. Done in alternating points of view, the reader comes to understand what motivates each person and why they do what they do in this conflict.

Terrence's efficiency in word use makes this story strong. I love his descriptive passages that never feel flowery or over-descriptive. He brings all his characters to their resolution in a satisfying story arc.

I really enjoyed this book, the author did a fantastic job of painting a vivid picture of the environment and the time period. It's a very creative, fictional account of what happened in Tiananmen Square China.

Terrence is a good friend of mine. If you're interested in the personal and cultural politics surrounding Tiannamen Square, you'll dig this.

Tiannnamen Square from the point of view of two brothers, one who stopped the tank, one in the army. Fabulous.

This is a fictionalized account of the events in Tiannaman Square in Beijing. I found it to be very good.

Characterization: 5
Conflict: 5
Conclusion: 5

Additional Thoughts:
The story is based on the man who famously stood up to the tanks in Tiananmen Square in 1989. It takes the view point of the "dissidant" the "soldier" and the "comrade" who is Deng Xiaoping. Despite all of the characters representing different aspects of the same event, they are all relatable characters who you commiserate with their decisions that they have to make, whatever the consequences.
