The novel was originally published as The Anoited in 1937. Contrary to popular belief (and official movie credits), this book was never made into a film.
How the hell MGM ever derived "Adventure" from this book is beyond me. It probably went down something like this:

MGM Exec: Hey, there's this book about an uneducated, seafaring man searching for his purpose in life. After a series of mind altering adventures, he realizes he needs book learning to understand the world and starts a relationship
