High priest of hedonism and godfather of gonzo journalism, Hunter S. Thompson was renowned for his counterculture masterpiece Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, which described his chemical-addled adventures in 1970s America. Taken from Thompson's brilliantly entertaining autobiography, Kingdom of Fear - the last book published before his death earlier this year - these piece ...more

Years ago someone lent me Fear and loathing in Las Vegas to read, but it didn't 'work' for me at the time. My enjoyment of Thompson's pieces in this taster may allow me to go back to his famous book with more understanding and appreciation. His crisp, clear style makes the bizarre events and people he portrays understandable, logical, almost everyday. But bizarre they are, like his birthday surprise for Jack Nicholson (not shy to drop names is old HST) gone spectacularly wrong. He adds interesti ...more

I'm not sure I'm comfortable admiring—maybe even idolising—a man as much a maniac as Hunter S. Thompson. What a wild wit. I believe this is just excerpts from an autobiography (would usually scorn such a thing, but I picked it up as part of a three-books-for-a-euro charity shop offer; nuts, right?), and I shall immediately source the full book and probably tear through it as rapaciously as I did this. This is a writer to guzzle.

Nice morning read.
I love the way Thompson makes me feel free and full of wanderlust.
He is a Dr. after all.

I enjoyed much of Thompson's writing, especially Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. This wee book was a bit of a disappointment. It is a slapdish collection of assorted short bits from later in Thompson's career, where his writing clearly had suffered due to long-term boozing and drinking. It offers a couple giggles, but mostly it is HST shtick and really farfetched tales. At a scant 54 pages, one can buzz through this collection in an hour.

The man is a genius. And a massive dickhead.
Here's someone who can SCARE Jack Nicholson out of his skin. Wow.
A good introduction, before reading the other stuff. Actually, I'm even thinking about writing a dissertation about the guy & his work.

A small collection of stories from Kingdom of fear - so if you have KoF already you might not want to bother, but the stories that are here flow well together and make a short, snappy book.

A great short and humorous read. Was perfect for riding the metro when I didn't have much of a time commitment.
