Welcome to the thrillingly erotic world of Follow Your Fantasy – a world where you, the reader, chooses what happens next.
As the story deliciously unfolds, exciting, sexy and downright naughty adventures await your every decision…
You might end up in steamy encounters with one man or woman, or more! In hotel rooms or high class casinos, on porno sets or at bachelor parties. Or, if there’s just too much choice, you can always go back and try again.
Remember, even if you choose submission, the control is still all yours.
Follow Your Fantasy is a new type of Erotica which gives the power back to the reader. It’s a collection of short stories based around a central thread and with recurring characters. But the most important character is You – a daring, sexy, open to adventures You on a night where anything can happen. Where will your fantasies take you?
I'm the author of Follow Your Fantasy, Harper Impulse. It's a very different twist on Erotica and the idea came to me in bed - alone. Unfortunately for me, my best Erotica only gets written when I'm single and a second book is in progress. When I'm not writing books, I'm writing 4 blogs, writing in at writer's group, Madrid Writer's Club, critiquing friend's writing...yep, pretty much writing is my life! Other than I date a lot (and write it up!), move around a lot (7 countries and counting), and have a crippling addiction to sugar and jigsaws.
Erotic novels are usually not my “thing”, but after hearing so many positive comments from people on Twitter and Facebook, my curiosity was awakened.
I am really glad that I did go out of my comfort zone and gave Follow Your Fantasy a try. I loved that the reader is in control the whole time. By clicking on what you want to happen next, you determine the outcome of the story and also how “far” you want the characters to be involved with each other.
Follow Your Fantasy is extremely cleverly written and designed. I am sure that it will hit a wide target audience as you, the reader, chose the outcome. There are certain paths in the story that appeal to everyone – the faint-hearted (me!) and the more daring…
Is it naughty? Definitely! I kept blushing whilst reading so it might not be the best idea to read this on a train, a crowded bus or similar, but in the comfort of your own living room.
I've always been a fan of erotica and when I saw this was in the "Choose Your Own Adventure" format I eagerly snatched it up. I should have saved my money. My first warning that I was going to be disappointed was the flat, amateurish writing. OK, that's pretty common in erotica, but it's still annoying. Then I noticed something more disturbing. The author kept trying to push the reader in particular directions, ones that inevitably led to some demeaning situation for the female character ("you"). The first came when the protagonist got the chance to impersonate a prostitute. I chose against this option because I, as a woman, wouldn't not demean myself to a man like that. But on the very next step I'm given a chance to change my mind. Then it happens again. It was like the author was saying, "No, you really want to be a whore!" It kept going on and on like this, from one demeaning situation to another, and really made me wonder if "Nicola Jane" is actually a pen name for a man. The book was certainly written with a man's sensibilities, and not a decent man at that. If Nicola really is a woman, she needs to read up on feminism and rethink her views on sexuality. Don't buy erotica that insults women, either their bodies or their intelligence. If you're looking for a hot read, look elsewhere.
What a great concept. Numerous scenarios with recurring characters but, you get to choose how the story proceeds. How far would you go? Fun and entertaining.
I'm reviewing Follow Your Fantasy despite the fact that I haven't finished it yet. Does that make me an inconsiderate lover? Book lover, I mean? Well, it's not exactly true anyway: I've already enjoyed multiple climaxes--I don't know how you ladies handle it--and even so I'm more than ready to go again. Or I will be. Just give me a minute, let me catch my breath.
So look, here's the deal, stop me if you've heard this before: a woman in a red dress gets stood up at a bar, but just as she's about to give up and go home, some handsome stranger slips her an envelope full of cash and a hotel key card on his way to the elevators... Except it's not just some woman, it's You. So, to paraphrase the movie Speed: Pop Quiz, hot-chick: what do you do?
It turns out, the answer is whatever you feel like. Thanks to Nicola Jane, I've been a good little girl once or twice and a considerably naughtier one rather more often. Some of my encounters were fairly vanilla, some of them fruity--so far no chocolate, just to carry the ice-cream metaphor to an uncomfortable extreme. Actually, so far no ice-cream either... but I wouldn't bet against it cropping up, somewhere in there.
The reason I'm comfortable reviewing before I read the last page is that FYF isn't exactly a novel. It's more like a short story that branches off in various different directions--most of them featuring what might euphemistically be called "a happy ending". Or, to put it another way, it's a whole bunch of short stories that all happen to start out the same. But those endings? Seriously different.
Reading from the comfortable privacy of a Kindle, as you follow your chosen path you jump around through the book in an unpredictable order. It is possible to finish one route and go back to find out what would have happened if you'd said "No" instead of "Yes" (or to back away from something if you don't fancy where it's heading), but I enjoyed it more in small doses. But then, I'm a guy, and it doesn't take a lot to get us in the mood, am I right, fellas?
...fellas?
Well, maybe I'm the only guy reading it.
Anyway, fun as it is to dip into the fantasy from time to time, I can't spend all day every day being picked up in bars, diving into threesomes--or foursomes, or moresomes--until I and all the possibilities are exhausted. Tempting though it may be, I'll have to be strong.
That tall, dark stranger with the big wad of cash, though? Him I couldn't resist. Once, at least.
Follow Your Fantasy: Deeper, by Nicola Jane, where you can choose your own storyline. Every chapter ends with two links where you can choose which to follow. There’s a hint in most links (such as “Meet her and her lover and have a threesome” or “stay home”), which prepared the reader for what was to come. I’m sure readers would appreciate the hints if they’re squeamish with certain types of scenes. With reading this type of "choice" book, realize that this book is really 6-7 short stories in one. Each storyline is not as fleshed out as expected from a full-length book. There is no real character development or any rhyme or reason, basically just choosing ways for the main character to get off. I had a feeling this would be the case going in, but there was still an abruptness of each ending. I would have appreciated at least some feeling of an end, at least on the HEA storylines. A minor thing, instead of “The End”, I wish it was more like “Back”. I had to scroll all the way back to go through my choices. At one point, I stumbled upon a book map, which was nice to have. This helped with knowing if you covered all parts. But again, it just had me scrambling all the way back and then flipping the pages until I got to the choices. Overall, the concept of the book was fun, going back and forth to see how many “happy endings” (wink wink) you can find. The reason for the three stars isn’t because of the “Back” button or the abrupt endings, that’s relatively minor of this type of book. The lack of stars was more for the main character. The story follows around a woman (did we ever learn her name?), I’ll call her Pretend Giselle (PG). She meets her doppelganger, Giselle, who happens to be a high-end escort. In the first couple of pages the author paints PG as this pathetic figure and does little to remedy this in any of the storylines. I felt PG should have claimed each scene more. If she did something to that hinted at empowering, the story ended and you had to go all the way back to the description of her being pathetic again. In the end, although more relatable than Giselle, PG just wasn’t for me.
This book was provided by NetGalley for an honest review.
Follow Your Fantasy's concept that you the reader chooses which fantasy to pursue intrigued me. I am not generally a fan of erotica preferring erotic romance which has a definite story line and real emotional connection between the characters.
In this collection of stories truth, dare and consequences all feature. So it will appeal to fans of risk free risqué entertainment. 'Follow Your Fantasy' provides the reader with an adult interpretation of the 'What If... scenario.
Pure escapism for the mature adult it is explicit. The kind of book most people would probably blush reading in any public setting. That said it is entertaining and well written and the alternatives offered to the reader at the end of each scene range from flirty to scorching hot and extraordinary so it has something for all tastes.
'Follow Your Fantasy' could be the catalyst for some very interesting truth and dare party games but you would certainly have to pick your companions carefully... Only joking.
If you enjoy erotic romance and want to experience the erotic without the happy ever after then I would recommend you give 'Follow Your Fantasy' a chance.
I received a copy of this book from Harper Collins UK - Harper Impulse via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
I would like to thank @harperimpulse for approving me on Net Galley to read this book, in exchange for a fair and honest review.
As I say I am more a reader of other fantasy novels, not the erotic type of fantasy but sometimes it is good to read something different. I had read the follow your adventure books when I was younger and loved them, so follow your fantasy I knew how the format worked but not how it would work in this case....
The books are written as though you the reader is in a bar, when a stranger hands you an envelope stuffed with cash and a key card, here is where your adventure starts.
Do you do a runner with the money? (Couldn't help but follow this one). Do you hand it in? (Nah that's boring). Do you go up to the room? (daring), I loved trying the different scenarios, and even when I did taking a different turn each time, some where steamy, some I didn't expect what happened next.
All I can say is I hope there are more of these books, I have had this books few weeks and still keep picking it up and following another fantasy a different way, think I may have exhausted them all by now, loved it.
Nicola's writing makes each scenario believable and that is why I kept trying the different scenarios. An absolute must if your like something a bit different.
I think I might have to go hunting for some follow your own adventure books for old times sake.
Harperimpulse please release more like these books
This is so different than any other book I have read. It's actually funny because I was going through my kids' books and found a create your own adventure book and told my teenager how I loved those books when I was young.
SO when I saw this one I had to jump on and see what it was all about. I will say after reading all the books that I have in first and third person reading in second always throws me. But with this one it is supposed to be about me so it makes sense I suppose. I think that it would have worked just as well if it were in first person.
I had thought at first okay, how many different things can actually happen? Some of them I think ended too fast. I wish I would have been given another option, to continue it.
It was fun and not the norm. So if you are looking for something fun and different this would be a fun one. You get to pick what you would want to happen from the choices there. Usually it is only 3 options do one thing, do another or go back to the last part you were at to make a different choice there.
Although it was fun, I'm not all that sold on it as an adult. I think I like a full novel that I can connect to the people in the book and watch it all play out from start to finish. Not bounce around.
I am sure some will absolutely love this book and I know many will find it just something fun to read. :)
Follow Your Fantasy is a delightful surprise; the "choose your own adventure" concept I grew up with, applied skillfully to tell a collection of short stories with a common start: you are a woman in a red dress that has been stood up at an hotel bar. As events unfold and you make choices, you are rewarded with different tales on how a not very exciting botched date can turn into one of the hottest nights in the life of someone.
As a long time lover of "What if" stories, I loved the approach, and I enjoyed the crescendo of naughtiness as I took first the seemingly tamer and sensible options, and then I retraced my steps and followed the more daring paths. My disbelief was suspended effectively long enough to follow through to the more extraordinary scenarios without losing ability to enjoy.
The sex scenes are varied and interesting, and the author strives to keep away from common places, sparing you from the dreaded "I have already read this" sensation that is so frequent when reading erotica. This variety will probably ensure at least a couple stories will really hit home with you, same as they did with me.
Looking forward to the next one. I wonder where the next choice will lead me.
The idea of this book is fantastic, a choose your own adventure erotica; I really hope it becomes a ‘thing’ as it’s incredibly enjoyable. I also loved the 2nd person narrative. The writing style is perfect for this concept as it goes against most erotica I’ve read in being rather light on the descriptions of characters, which allows your mind to fill in the blanks. It’s more of a guide for fantasies in a way!
What makes me not rate it as a 5 is due to some personal opinions rather than the quality of the book. While I do understand this is fantasy and these dislikes of mine unfortunately tend to present in most erotica and porn anyway, they still bothered me a bit. 1. I found it rather hard to let go of my natural paranoia of STIs as there are quite a lot of multiple partner/orgy scenarios. 2. At first it seemed to me that the more morally dubious options tend to bring sex, and I’ve always disliked the idea that sex is something bad, dirty or naughty. 3. Not mad on the prostitution angle, but this can be quite hot for some and probably allowed for the most scenarios.
I'm so glad I only paid $1.99. I still regret wasting even that much money when I could have bought something to snack on instead, figuratively and literally.
I was honestly expecting this 'book' to be better, considering it's published by a well-known romance publisher. Well, if you think this sounds like a fun book, I'll just let you know now that the 'choices' don't go anywhere. You choose one path, and it ends in the following 'chapter'. You may get lucky and get two 'chapters' instead, but that's the most you'll get. I was expecting to have romantic story line choices, with developing stories and characters, but these were just boring little sexual encounters that ended after a page or two.
Cheap, just like the 'character' and unsatisfying. Not worth the money, not even two bucks.
I also found the lack of condoms a complete turnoff and disgusting, because I could only imagine the character contracting STDs. That's not erotic at all.
ARC received from publisher, via Netgalley, in exchange for a review
The whole idea of this book intrigued me and when I started to read it yes it is a very clever idea. It is also well written and, depending on which path you follow through the book, has some very heated scenes.
Basically you read the first chapter of the book (it's written as if it is you that is the actual character) and you are then faced with certain decisions to make. You click the link on the page that corresponds to your decision and you jump to the next chapter and so on. Going back to the beginning and changing your choices changes the story completely! Almost a never-ending, always changing, story.
But the first time I tried to read this, I was in bed and feeling sleepy and to be honest it all seemed too much hard work. The following day I tried again and yes it worked.
Follow Your Fantasy is the most fantastic idea! Taking inspiration from the 'Choose your Own Adventure' books popular with children in the 80s and 90s, Follow Your Fantasy is a risqué version of this. At different points in the story you get given options of what you want to happen next, offering different opportunities every time you read.
Follow Your Fantasy was great fun, and I can imagine it would be popular with the new adult /erotica audience. Whilst I loved having the chance to 'mix and match' a story of my own, there were times I thought the writing could have been more engaging. I appreciate it is hard to do that when the story could leap about in any permutation, but it did cause there to be some distance between the characters and the reader which I think are particularly important in erotic fiction.
Book Pairing:- M/F Did it give me a book hangover :- No Is this a review book or personal read :- Review read
Why I chose this book?
The Blurb sounded interesting so I applied for a copy on netgalley and was approved.
What I liked about this book.
* In theory the idea of choosing the plot yourself was good. * The writing was good.
What I didn't like about this book.
* Although the idea was good I don't think it worked too well as I kept ending up at the same part over and over again. * I got more annoyed then entertained by this read
Would I read more from this author?
Yes I'll give her another shot as for what I read was good.
Daring, steaming fantasy… just kidding. (I have met the author of this book, do I have to include some sort of disclaimer?).
A well executed twist (ha!) on the type of books you tend to associate more with D&D than with S&M —though just one path gets you that far. Her style is quite refreshing —you know what I mean— in that she describes the right things with the right style, and gets to surprise you with a few insightful gems (“maddening imprecision” and “velvet violence” were my two favourites).
It is easy to lose yourself in the tiny scenes. I have absolutely no complaints about the book. If it had been a date, I would definitely call again and schedule another nice weekend getaway.
So the concept to this book is absolutely fantastic. You being the character and choosing what way the story goes is unique, refreshing and incredibly exciting. Not only that you get to read it over and over again choosing new ways and therefore giving you a brand new story. How good is that please? It's like a game for adults and treasure for us book geeks.
Now, although impressive. I did think the story side to it all could have been just a bit better and a lot longer. As soon as I'd started and got into my stride it was game over. At first I thought OK start over, but it continued to be short. Yes OK short and at times very sexy, but still disappointing. It's a shame it really is because this should be a five star book, but for the reasons stated I can't give it that.
I cant really rate this book because it is to hard to read using my kindle and I couldn't sort through the parts I needed to skip too. I think if I actually had the book in hand it would have been OK, but word of advice don't even bother on an E-reader.
A fun little book, it reminds me of some of the adventure books I read as a child where you chose what happens next. I would like to see more choices and a bit more steamy sexyness but all in all a good book to pass a spare hour.
Of course this is a shameless clone of A GIRL WALKS INTO A BAR. Not only that; this is the cheap, terribly written, free-handout copy of that one. Bad, bad, really bad. No vocabulary, awkward turns of phrase...
