I did not use this book in a course, but bought it as a reference before returning to college after 20 years. The book shines in three ways. First, it provides a detailed explanation of literary terms that need to be understood to succeed in an undergraduate English literature course. Everything from characterization and plot for fiction, to rhythm and symbolic allusion in poetry to tragic and comic vision in drama. This was a simple and easy to understand English Lit book. I enjoyed it, however it seems to have a little too many descriptive when trying to explain things. The material was a little easier to understand than I thought it should have been, considering it is a college course.

Of all of the non-major books I've had to purchase, this was one of my favorites. I would have kept it even if the bookstore would not have taken it back.
