This is the first historical erotica I've read with medium BDSM elements, and it was rather nicely done. Tobias Lynsted had a dark past, and his work is more like that of a Bow Street Runner than a mere solicitor for the Earl of Culverstone. When the Earl blackmails him into mailing his daughter, Jane, Tobias has no choice but to capitulate else his activities at La Maison des Plaisirs Noir (House of Dark Pleasures) an exclusive club catering to men's wildest desires (usually along the lines of ...more

Emotionally riveting and stunningly sensual, Monica Burns’ His Mistress is a novel you won’t want to miss. The first installment in the Self-Made Men series pushes all the boundaries of the traditional historical romance and leaves you wanting more! His Mistress is a great start to a fabulous series about wild men and the dominating women who love them.

For readers tired of the same bland historical romance, His Mistress should touch all the right places. Even with that being said, fans of the t

5 stars is so not enough to describe how much I love this story of tobias and jane! :) I am usually not into female dominates but this one being done in historical times really made me smile! Jane is the kind of woman I would have wanted to be! doing what I liked whithout being forced! and Tobias has demons on jane can understand! :) she helps him figure out what he needs and he sees what she needs both in a club and in private! which are the best most intense parts! when tobias and Jane come ...more

If you know me at all, or have at least followed this blog for any length of time you know that I don’t read historical romance. Ok, that’s a lie because I’ve read some but as a general rule, nope, not for me. In fact when I went looking for reviewers one of the criteria was people who read historical since we get a lot of requests for it. I have tried countless times with countless different authors to read historical romance and it never works. I’m not crazy about the time periods, the ...more

La Maison des Plaisirs Sombres is the premier BDSM club in London, but to enter you must be granted membership by Angélique Bissette. Leather and silk bindings, floggers, whips, feather dusters and ropes are all welcome here. Women and men enter this world to be sexual free and they use domination or submission to achieve it. La Maison des Plaisirs Sombres is their sexual sanctuary, but someone is threatening to rip the veil away and exposes them all.

I finished this book a couple of days ago, but have had a hard time formulating a review.

This is a new to me author, and I must say she is an awesome story teller. Her writing is descriptive without being overpowering. The world and character building was second to none. For those reasons alone I could not rate this book any less than 4 stars.

If you enjoy historical romance, blackmail and scandal, with a side of kink you will love this story.

An erotic historical that will make you sit up and take notice!
Tobias and Jane are perfect for each other in both worlds..the world of every day..and the world of doms and subs. This story has a twist though...Tobias has secrets. Secrets that torture his soul and Jane may be the only one who can save him! I thoroughly loved reading this story! It was hot and steamy! And I loved how Jane held her own with Tobias. A great weekend read!! <3

ARC provided by author for honest review. Loved this book. Loved that it is set in London in 1892 before chivalry all but disappeared. Love Tobias and that he is a smart alpha male but able to surrender to the right woman. Jane is wonderful and I enjoyed every moment reading about her. She is smart, really smart, practical and no nonsense. Loved their pairing. There is some intrigue and spice that I won't spoil for you but overall a totally fabulous read….Can't wait for the sequel...

Emotional and scorching, His Mistress by Monica Burns tells a story of one man, a solicitor and one woman, a spinster blackmailed into marrying each other. Both are hiding secrets that would ruin them in the ton’s eyes. This is Ms. Burns’ first book in her new Self-Made Men series and I loved this story. Yes, it is an erotic but it also has romance.

To be honest, I was not expecting to be blown away by this book. In fact, I am not a fan of the dom-sub trope in romance but I decided to read it bec

Yes, this is definitely a book you want to read. Once I started I couldn't put it down. The book is well written and will keep you turning the pages. Tobias Lynstead is a solicitor caught up in an interesting situation that has him blackmailed into an agreement to do something he had no intention of doing. Lady Jane has her own issues to deal with, one being a father who has been blinded by his desire for his new bride that has made him sell his daughter to rid her from the home. Jane has been ...more

HIS MISTRESS by Monica Burns is an exciting Historical Erotica Romance set in 1892 London. Volume 1 in "The Self-Made Man series", and what a beginning. A quick read to me. I read it in one setting.
A lady with dark desires, meets a gentleman with a tortured past who also enjoys dark desires. A marriage of convenience and blackmail is just the beginning in this tale of submission, sensuality, bondage, dominance, and the power of love to heal old wounds.

Wow! I actually didn't know what to expect when I read that this was a BDSM. Am I the only one who didn't know what that meant? LOL! I have never read a book by Monica Burns that I didn't enjoy, so this 60+ year old jumped right in. Now that I've read it, I can tell you that Monica has written an intensely seductive Victorian-era romance that kept me riveted to the story and the characters from the front page to the last.

The writing, as is always the case with Monica, is beautiful and polished.

Monica Burns has a way with keeping things classy yet steamy!! She has an incredible ability to draw you into the world she has created. "His Mistress" is a beautiful combination of a historical romance and BDSM. If you have never read a BDSM genre and really enjoy historical romance, this is definitely a great intro to the BDSM genre.

I am fascinated by the juxtaposition of the buttoned-up facade of the Victorian era—this novel is set in 1892—against the uninhibited world of sexual pleasures. “Those uptight and proper Victorians” as my good friend likes to say. They just didn’t discuss such things in Polite Society. One’s foibles, weaknesses, and desires were completely private and, if discovered, meant almost certain ruin, scandal, and possibly even arrest.

This was a very well written book, like others of Monica Burns' books I have read.
More romance than anything, truly. Although it does delve into Tobias darker secrets-as well as Jane's.
Jane is new to commanding a man in the bedroom, but has been commanded by men all her life. She has found an outlet that allows her to show her strength.
Since this is a historical romance book, the author does try to stay with the times in her wording. The sex scenes with Jane and Tobias are well written without
3.5 stars. Jane is provided a choice. Marry or end up on the street with nothing. Her father wants her out of the house at the prodding of his fiancee Irene and Irene and Jane don't get along. She doesn't want to marry and turn her life over to a husband, but when Tobias asks she accepts making him agree they will live separate lives.

Tobias isn't there out of deep love for Jane, he's just been blackmailed by her father to marry her or have his name dragged through the mud as a result of Tobias'

If you are looking for a well written historic mildly BDSM erotic book this one fits the bill on those many levels, although it seems a nearly impossible task. The book, His Mistress, I won in a Goodreads giveaway but it would have been one that I would have enjoyed picking up anyway.
The story is set in the latter days of Victorian England, but no year is given, just hints of many years passing since the French Revolution and cables can be sent from the Continent. (But since I am American and in

I read this book because I was in the mood for a historical romance but wanted something a bit different, and this fit the bill perfectly. Before this book I had been in somewhat of a historical romance book slump never making it past the 40% mark, so I was so relieved when this one stuck. This was just a wonderful, moving read.

What I enjoyed was that while this book had elements of BDSM, it wasn't the whole book and it still stayed true to the time period that the book took place. Both the mai

Monica Burns has taken your standard historical romance and turned it in to something extraordinary. She has introduced historical fans to the seedy and delightful pleasures of the world of BDSM with a dominating female character in Jane and a complex and sexy hero in Tobias.

Their story develops similar to the historical romances that readers are used to, but takes the reader on a deep emotional journey through layers of personal demons and intricately erotic sexual encounters. It’s the undoing

Wonderful erotic historical romance about a man who enjoys the challenge of submitting to a woman's will in order to pleasure her. Little does he know the one woman who has set her mind on his complete and utter submission, is the woman he has just been blackmailed into marrying. It started and ended pretty strong with great possibility. But in between there I wanted to really stop reading after a while. Because if it wasn't Jane's lack of courage one minute. It was the author's overly excessive use of the characters names and the name of the brothel where the main characters engaged in their BDSM relationship like 12 or so times per chapter. Not to mention the fact that although I know the author said it wouldn't be as historically accurate in regards to the actual BDSM ...more

This is the first time to read this author. I selected the book based on the storyline - which started off quite well. Unfortunately, it didn't live upto it's exciting promise. Firstly, there was too much revelation of his and her POV thinking and not much in talking. Which is rather frustrating as it slowed the pace of the book. In some instances, the same scene was told from his POV followed by her POV. I ended up feeling I was re-reading parts of it. Secondly, more could have been done to ...more

Since I finished this book last night I've been trying to form my thoughts of the book. The book sounded good from the blurb but I still don't know if I liked the book or not. To me the book was slow and didn't flow well. I'm just not sure of why because there were parts that I really liked and that's why I gave it a 3* rating. It might be that I just couldn't get into the fem/dom roll. There were parts that were very sexy and then parts I didn't like at all. I did like the characters a lot. ...more

I challenge ALL readers to find a historical romance that doesn't use the word "rasp." Seriously, have you ever used it in a sentence? How about "lave"?

All these writers use a template. Troubled boy meets troubled girl. Misunderstandings. Confused self-analysis. He/she struggle with their passions/vulnerability. Get together.

You too can write a romance novel! Check out Amazon. There's a romance writer's dictionary/thesaurus.

Seriously, you could write this stuff in your sleep. Probably

I received this book as a first read. I can't say how much I enjoyed this book. These days most of the erotica out there has become a written form of porn - unnecessarily vulgar and lacking emotion. This was nothing like that. It stimulates the imagination and allows the reader to feel the sensuality the author artistically describes. She sets the scene so well that you feel like you're playing along with Jane and Tobias, anxiously anticipating the next move. I will definitely read more from ...more
