One evening as my parent's were settling down for Jack Paar's Tonight Show, I was summoned out of bed to the living room of our Levitowner house in the Meadowdale development near Carpentersville. Their faces were grave. "Your mother has something important to tell you," Dad said. I was seven, still sleeping in a blue one-piece with booties, pajamas kept inside a zippered tiger on the bed during the day. They had been warned by Dr. Spock that this was a crucial event, telling the o...more

Let's note first that this book isn't actually intended as a readaloud book, nor is it intended for children much younger than the age of six.
The format of the book reflects this. It's a bit long for toddlers (who aren't known for having great attention spans), and the different spreads are disconnected - when a kid is at the age where they struggle to read "All, Ball, We All Play Ball", the last thing they need to worry about is what they read two pages before!

Why I hate theis wonderful book.
“HOP ON POP”
by Gerard C. Smith
Come "Hop on Pop," my Lisa said
And hop of course is what she did
Her brother joined in with a jump
On Poppa’s tum he went crash-bump
Lisa hopped and hopped some more
She knocked poor Poppa to the floor
Both kids did bounce, each up and down
Poor Pop was trounced and he did frown
Now he hates that bastard T. Geisel
And hopes the rotter roasts in hell

This book is great for beginning or struggling readers. It teaches kids the rhyming scheme, which is such an important skill to have when leanring how to read. Children can hear the words that rhyme. I read this book to my two year old nephew. It is one of his favorites. He has heard it so many times that when I leave out a word he says the word that is coming up. I use this as a teaching time to point to the word as he says it. Then I repeat the sentence and point to the words as I read them. R...more

The worst of Seuss's easy reader books. It's plotless, interminable, and stupid.
(To paraphrase Monty Python: "This is a book for laying down and avoiding. At the opening of the Sydney Bridge Club, they were fishing them out of the main sewers every 'alf an 'our.")
Be warned--your toddler might like it, and then you're in for two years of supervised community service--worse than picking up butts alongside the Freeway.
I'm irascible--I never liked Curious George, either.

Call me old fashioned but I think that there is far too much pop hopping going on in America these days. It's disgusting and then they turn around and turn it into a children's book. What's next? Leaving a cat alone with two unsupervised children? An elephant wedging an egg in his butt? A fox wearing human undergarments? Oobleck? That just has to be filthy. Where does it end?

It just didn't do it for me--no character development, no irony, to existential angst, it was almost like a children's book.

I have a funny story about a friend and this book.
A friend of mine told me that in 8th grade she was assigned the task of writing a book report. My friend noted that the teacher said nothing about the length or level of the book and took full advantage. She chose Hop on Pop. The best part is that she made her book report about parental abuse....

For me, this is THE book! I remember starting to learn to read on my own just looking at the front cover. Four whole letters in my repertoire. The rest followed soon after with the vowels throwing me a curve. I'll be forever grateful to Mr. Geisel and an older sister (now a kindergarten teacher) for giving me the tools to put it all together.

An ambitious exploration of social dexterity, "Hop on Pop" may be the most important book of our time. Rather than viewing Pop-hopping as rude or cruel, Seuss argues that it is a delightful, possibly necessary act.
"Hop on Pop" is the most important, timely book you will ever read. Now excuse me, I've got to find my Pop.

Okay I just had to add this one, as a joke, because it's this book, and ones similar that I spend most of my time reading these days, but hey Alex loves it, and I love that he loves to hear stories, so I can't complain.

This is the book that I first read on my own. My daddy and I were sitting and I read it front to back all on my own, never having read it before. I was only 2, beaming, and looking expectantly at my dad. It was a moment I'll never forget. (I mean, by golly, it opened a whole new dimension in my life).

My daughter and I had a great time with this book when she was in the very first stages of learning to read. This is probably one of the easiest of of the Dr. Seuss books. We laughed the most when we decided to say all of the words using the wrong vowel sounds e.g. "Hope on Pope" :)

"The simplest Seuss for youngest use". Indeed. Most illustrations come in pairs with the punch-line in the second one. Gotta love a book that shows a kid aggressively biting a tiger's tail or two kids hitting one another in the head with tennis racquets. The man is a genius.

this is the first book I ever read. I remember specifically stopping at the last page, which contains four lines *in a row* and then I remember distinctly getting through those lines to achieve my crowning glory as a new reader: one book finished.

Our all time favorite learn-to-read book. Deals with word families so kids start to see how it all works. And makes it easier to read since they know the ending sounds.

I am currently reading this book. And I'll be reading it again in 5 minutes. And 10 minutes after that. It is my daughter's favorite book. A special thanks to Dr. Seuss for making this book tolerable to read over and over.

Cooper is reading this to us and will be finishing it tonight. His first whole book! We get to add it to the list for the Summer Reading program at the library. I do hope he learns to love reading as much as we do.

Hop on Pop was just another one of those Dr. Seuss books that are just fun to read. Hop on Pop is just a fun book to read. They're bouncing all over the place including their dad, hints the title Hop On Pop!

This nnbook supports violence in young children!!! You wonder why some children kill their parents, and this is the reason! This book is filled with senceless violence, and inapropriate humor!!!
