This was a well done short story that really leaves you begging for more. Great backstories into the characters past as they try to survive the apocalypse around them. This story is only a snapshot of what could be an amazing full length novel. Leigh Winterstine provides a chillingly dark and twisted outlook on the 'end of the world' genre with a Stephen King twist.

Caught in Stilled Flame is another example of Winterstine's excellent writing. The gritty detail and description of this story make it compelling to read. Immediately you're drawn into the world of these characters who are are lost in a sense of hopelessness regarding the changes in their world, and are struggling to organize a way of life that is based upon sheer survival.

Each character has a unique personality that you come to understand in time. Winterstine successfully places you in the mind

“The girl’s pretty green eyes became as big as saucers. They jabbed an uninvited hook into his heart, again proving it to be not so steeled or unaffected, after all.” 0 likes
“The truck pulled away. When the girl finally opened her eyes, the strange man was looking down at her. She trembled under his gaze, praying that none of this day had ever happened and she was really only dreaming. Why had she walked so far from home? Walking and walking until she couldn’t have found her way back, even if she tried? Why hadn’t she brought any candy with her? And why did she have to wear these shoes? Why was any of this happening?” 0 likes
