Mandy Baldwin does an excellent job of creating deep, interesting, and complex characters. Her settings are very descriptive, and she has a different-in-a-good-way of sorting the story, switching from third to first person viewpoint, and telling the story in bits and pieces in a non linear fashion.

I was drawn in and interested in the characters and in the past mysteries the narrative kept hinting at, that I couldn't put my ipad down until I knew what happened.

The story covers a very long pe

This was a lovely story of how lives and events are connected and how those connections, even if they are unknown to us, affect our lives and our actions.
Baldwin tells the life stories of a group of girls in the mid-seventies, in a small English sea side town, and how one summer changed the direction of all their lives.
The novel starts in the present, with Amber, and then goes back to her childhood and her father’s childhoods.
Each chapter tells as story of one of the girls and as we read on, we

Quarter Past Summer is another, well written and enjoyable book from Mandy Baldwin. The story charts several generations of the Lee/Faulkes family living in the fictional Sussex town of Westering. World events help shape the fates of the family members and they are forced to deal with the impact of conflicts from the First World War to the war in Afghanistan. There are some beautifully drawn, vivid characters all set in a complex and demanding story. The writing is balanced and evocative with a ...more

A lovely unassuming story of intertwined lives that at times was a bit confusing but most of the time I was hooked. We all have moments in our lives that have shaped us and connected us to others and the group of girls in this story have faced guilt from theirs. I enjoyed the feelings that were beautifully described and would definitely recommend this book for a great read on a long weekend.

I received a free copy of this book from Goodreads and all opinions are my own.

A little confusing a first due to the many characters, but it all pull together nicely in the end. A good read and I liked the Britishness!

For the longest time, I couldn't read past the first few pages. For one thing, I don't like stories that are in first person POV because I always mix up the voices in my head and they would sound all the same to me which sucks.

Another thing is cultural difference, I am more used to reading American literature and I could not get the scenes working in my head. But after forcing myself past the first few pages, I finally got into the groove of reading this book and I must say it is a pretty intere
