Meet Madeline! She lives in an old house in Paris that is covered with vines and is one of twelve little girls. As we soon discover, Madeline might be the smallest of the girls but she is also brave and adventurous. She is not afraid of mice, loves winter, snow, and ice, and says “Pooh-hooh” to a tiger at the zoo. Two of the girls’ adventures happen right in the house. The other four happen after the girls set out at nine in two straight lines to explore Paris. You can read all six adventures in...more
Mad About Madeline is a lovely hardbound collection of the six Madeline tales published during Ludwig Bemelmans's lifetime. He wrote a seventh story called Madeline in America and Other Holiday Tales that was published posthumously in 1999. Besides the Madeline stories, there is an introduction by Anna Quindlen on how the stories have enriched her life as a parent and at the end of the volume, there are sketches and a brief history of the Madeline stories.

It took me a while to become accustomed to the rhyming flow of Bemelmans Madeline books, but once I did, they were a joy to read to my son. I wasn't sure if my Hot Wheels-loving boy would get into a story about a girl's adventure in a boarding school, but occasionally he even requests these books at bedtime.
Charming stories about a small French girl's moxie.

It's not just the characters and the stories, but the art is quite wonderful too. I intended to read "Madeline's Christmas" before going to sleep last night and instead, I ended up reading all the stories again. Some of the passages were even read aloud to my beagle, Shea. He loves a good book too.

Recommends it for:
children of all ages, especially very young children
This volume contains the complete "Madeline" books: Madeline, Madeline and The Bad Hat, Madeline's Rescue, Madeline and The Gypsies, Madeline in London, and Madeline's Christmas. These books are loved, especially by young children, because all have wonderful paintings and drawings on every page and because of engaging rhyme & meter in the stories. The stories are about the spunky Parisian girl named Madeline. I always assumed she lived in an orphanage with 11 other little girls and t...more
Just found this hardcover collection of Madeline books......has like 6 books in it and if those books were bought individually, would cost triple this book! (this book costs $23 on Amazon) So excited for C who will be getting this in her Easter basket.
If you like Madeline, this is definitely a book you'll want to own. It's all the Madeline books in one. The stories are charming and the illustrations are fantastic (especially if you love Paris). I can't wait until my daughter's old enough for these.
I was given this book at age three and still go back and read it every so often. A classic and a forever favorite! Madeline is absolutely perfect for what it is. All other books of its genre should strive for this book's level.
The Madeline books are super fun to read aloud. The words just float off your tongue. I think the first Madeline book is the best, but all of them are charming.
I received this book many years ago as an unexpected gift from a friend. I don't even remember telling her how much I love Madeline. This book is the ultimate gift for Madeline enthusiasts. It contains all of Ludwig Bemelmans's tales about the beloved little schoolgirl Madeline. The collection also contains some early sketches Bemelmans made of his most famous character, as well as a brief background of how Madeline was created.

I read this as a kid and today I sat down and read a collection of Madeline stories...just as engaging...and what fond memories.
This is one of my favorite books from my childhood, now I'm reading it to my little sister.
A lovely set of poems and stories that brought back found memories of reading these as a child.
i love this one soo much because i have it and guess what i got it for my first x-mas
i do love all the madeleine books. :)
Always have loved Madeline.
I love Madeline :-)
Our daughter LOVED these books growing up ... she loved the rhyming way that the author tells these stories. I first read them to her as read alouds before she could read well and she would love to repeat the opening lines before I would have a chance to say them ... "In an old house in Paris all covered with vines lived twelve little girls in two straight lines. In two straight lines they broke their bread and brushed their teeth and went to bed ..." !!
the girls (and i) love to read madeline books! this is great because it's got all of them in one volume, with the original illustrations - a classic for your kiddo's bookshelf! the only caveat to an all-in-one volume is i constantly get suckered into reading all the stories in one sitting, since the girls consider it to be "one" bedtime story! :-)
Who can't resist the cadence of these stories. And who wouldn't want to be Madeline, the one that stands out of the crowd, has adventures, speaks her mind. The gypsies, the injured veteran, the spanish ambassador, geneveive, the menagerie, the scar, daily walks ... the bad hat.

I loved these books when I was young. The poetry format is great. My favorite character is the Bad Hat. I love him so much. He is such a misunderstood character in the beginning and I'm so glad Madeline takes the time to befriend him.
As a kid I identified with Madeline. She was mischievous -- and she had an appendectomy, just like me. My kids never liked the Madeline stories as much as I did but I have very fond memories of them.
Meg loves this although prefers her own retelling to mine
This book has been with us for years. An old favorite of my two older kids, it has become a delight too for my toddler and we spend numerous night reading this as one of her faves.
I got this for Christmas a few years back, I will add my advocacy to the Amazon review above: it really is one of the best gift books on the planet.
It's obvious why Madeline likes these books. I think the kids also enjoy the playful rhyme too. I love the original illustrations.
My daughter has been requesting a Madeline story at every nap-time and bed-time. Glad she's enjoying classic children's literature.
I don't remember reading Madeline stories when I was young, but I wish I had. I totally love them!
Madeline is one of my boy's favorites..this is a fun book because they are all in one place.
