Orphaned Diane Albret finds herself in the headmistress's office to be punished under the eyes of her mysterious guardian, Daniel St. John.

Daniel soon realizes his young charge is no longer a child he thought he knew and she no longer belongs into a school. He takes her to his home in Paris, a home he shares with his sister.

As Diane's guardian, Daniel buys her a new wardrobe and takes her to the theater, not realizing the impact such attention might have on his young char More...

A friend at work challenged me to read this series (that she owns), which contains no vampires or mythological creatures. I was reluctant. While I cut my reading teeth on my mom's romance novels, I tired of re-reading cliche and sexist stereotypes about weak women who need a big, strong (and sometimes violent) man to show them how to live.

I enjoyed this book, despite it's cheesy romance title, more than I thought I would. Lots of the seemingly "necessary" romance novel e More...

I felt this story told by Madeline Hunter, was deserving of 3 1/2 stars.

If you notice my lack of enthusiasm in my review, it's because it wasn't overtly bad, leaving me compelled to warn you all off from it. Nor was it mind bendingly fantastic, making me talk incessently to all my friends at home and GR alike.

It was.... just good. A little dry on the storyline, and the dialogue between Diane and Daniel didn't share the same wit as the hero and heroine in the last book I' More...

I struggled to rate this book, because on the one hand the actual romance between Daniel and Diane was satisfying, but on the other as a reader I was too lost for too long even up until the end.

Even after all was revealed, I still wasn't sure that I understood absolutely everything that took place. That kind of spoiled my enjoyment of the book. I was more interested in the other players in the book and wanted to know who their hookups were. I will continue with the series as I know th More...

I had a lot of questions reading this book, even up to the very end. I was content to move forward because I thought I'd be rewarded for the build up in the end. Though my attention was piqued I still felt like something was slightly off. I still can't put my finger on it but it feels just a little too forced - like the author felt compelled to end the story, and end it now with everything just so easily and conveniently explained. Hmmm.... still, I did enjoy the characters and the world tha More...

There have been many long summaries of the storyline and I try my best to keep it shor even it’s difficult with this story.
Wealthy shipmangnat Daniel St. John is a kind of guardian for young orphan Diane whom he some kind of filed away into a shool for young girls in France until she comes of age (the story takes place after the French Revolution and plays in France and England). They hardly know each other but when Diane comes of age he decides to introduce her into society first in franc More...

Daniel St. John takes his ward away from her school when he discovers she's older than he thought. He realizes how attractive she is and decides to use her as a pawn to a game of revenge he's been playing for almost a decade. Nobody knows much about his past and there are many tales about his success with the wives of some peers. But the innocent woman he plans to use lures him like no other and makes it difficult to hold on to his original plans.

I really liked this dark romance. I More...

I read an article in Publisher's Weekly that named this author as the "literary heir" of Jane Austen. Well, I don't think I could agree with that, and not because of the sex scenes. (You really have to judge romances based on more than their sex scenes and cheesy titles/covers. Otherwise it's impossible to consider them objectively.) This was a very interesting historical, suspenseful romance that captured the class inequities in England and the French anger in Paris in post-Napoleon F More...

3.5 I am grateful that I had first read The Charmer without knowing it was a series. I loved it and decided to start with the beginning novel,The Seducer, I found it much slower-it didn't have the same addicting allure. The last 100 or so pages redeemed it for me, the ending was very touching. Madeline Hunter is a great writer (even will it's not at her very best)a and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

This book didn't work for me at all. I couldn't relate to either the hero or the heroine - they might as well have been from Mars for all that I could understand of their actions and motivations (most of which on the hero's part were only revealed at the very end of the book - I hate that). Individual scenes in the book were well-written, but as a whole it just didn't come together. If it had been written by an author who was new to me, I would've dropped it before even getting half-way through, More...

Skipped over middle section because it was slow reading, thus I do not know what Tyndale did. Not at all motivated to read the middle section to find out. I think I read too fast for this author's writing pace.

I read the entire Seducer series but I read it out of order. It is a good series with character the a common in all of the books. While each book is a stand alone I think it would be better read in order.

I would give this a 2.5 because I didn't skim the book. I think the problems with this story is it felt like it wasn't progressing, and I didn't get any type of connection with the characters.

I am about 3/4 of the way through this book and am still thouroghly confused. I still don't know what happened to Diane and Daniel... I swear I keep reading to find out, but not in the page turner/high drama way.

The life of a stron girl growing into a strong woman is a great plot. Add a legendary lover and things heat up. A nice read from a talented author.

Weirdly enough I can't remember if I've already read this or perhaps just read the first chapter as they sometimes have them at the end of other books. I know I'd at least read the beginning, but as I can't remember what happens I'm continuing. I think for some reason I really did just read the beginning. I certainly enjoy Hunter's writing and her way of depicting characters.

So no, I had not read it, but as there were first chapters from two further books of hers at the back of this More...

Wouldn't you know, my public library has the saint and the seducer, but not the charmer. Annoying. At least this book was a pleasant read.

Read about 100 pages and gave up, it is more suspenseful than romantic. Not my cup of tea.

Sorry to those who may love this read but;

The book was not at all as i expected, rather a long drawn out saga that read as though written in the period it was set.

Love scenes were way to taste full for me and the characters were a little hard to warm to.

I give the book two stars as it did hold a small occasional charm but unfortuantely too small and hidden under the wealth of blah blah blah and felt like the book was never going to end (not a good sign).

The best Madeline Hunter book that I've read so far :D
I loved how Diane grew up a lonely girl and learnt to love the "Devil Man" :D
And loved even more the fact that she learned that she didn't need to find a member of her family to be happy. His love was enough :D

Ooh! I love it when a story (especially a romance) veers into the unexpected - and multiple POVs! Delightful and full of suspense. :)
