It was difficult for me to like Sophia at first. She is not your typical heroine in these types of romance novels. She is the one with the money, power, and title. What I reacted to most was her attitude of non-chalance, and what came off as irresponsibility and selfishness. I realized later that it was her way of protecting herself from the hurt and from being used by others. Really not atypical of a reaction as male characters would exhibit in the same situation. I just wasn't ready to f

The last section of this book, in contrast to the previous one in this series, is perfect and makes this book a keeper for me. I'm not sure about the opening scene, though - when you look at the book as a whole, the "seraglio" scene has no relation to what happens in the rest of the book, or to Sophia's character as it develops in the rest of the book. Almost seems like it was stuck into the book to grab the reader's superficial interest ...

While not as appealing as The Saint, it was still a pretty good book. I understood in the end why Sophia ran away and stayed in France, it took me awhile to get there and to the point that I liked her. I liked Adrian and wished that he could have told his "father" where he could stick his good will. There were a few bright moments in the book, but beyond that it was just good.

I like that the woman in this love story was the one with the title, the estate, etc. Rare for a romance novel. Hunter writes characters that have depth and interest to them. The back stories and supporting players are rich and detailed. But they're packaged up with most of the typical plot twists and turns, and that's a drawback for me.

I like Madeline Hunter, but this wasn't one of my favorites. I got through it, but it didn't make a big impression. As I'm writing this, I"m having trouble remembering the plot, and that's usually an indication that it was just so-so for me.

Who knew I would actually learn some history in a Regency romance? Hunter deftly weaves in the historical backdrop within the scope of this story. I enjoyed it and the characters. :)

This is my first book by Hunter and I really like her style. The relationship between Adrian and Sophia went far beyond physical. I also felt that Sophia's relationship problems were legitimate. They didn't come across as a plot device.
The only thing I would change are the mysteries. There was one that attention without derailing the story. Then towards the end there were others that I couldn't care less about. However, this wasn't a big issue.

Sophia is the only child of the Duke of Everdon, When he dies, in 1831, Adrian is sent to fetch her home to take up the reins of power. She doesn’t want them, doesn’t want to marry the man she thinks her father wanted her to marry, doesn’t want any of it, but Adrian can’t let her refuse. He’s the only man she trusts in the least. There’s a big mystery, lots of political intrigue, and good stuff. I really liked this one.

This book was ok. I really like Ms.Hunters other books, but this one was not as good as the books I have previously read. I will continue to trudge threw this series and finish it anyway like the sucker that I am. Still hoping that the series gets better.

3 1/2 stars - Heroine overly annoying at times with her trying to run away; but I enjoy Madeline Hunter's style of writing that it makes it ok.
