Isabel was born in Portugal and her parents were King John I of Portugal and Philippa of Lancaster. So Isabel was John of Gaunt's granddaughter. She received a very good education and learned Latin, French, English and Italian in the process. In addition she took part in some "feminine interests" such as song and needlework, but she also displayed much interest in books and politics.

I made it through this, because I wanted to see how it ended. It was a bit of a slog, though. It was as if the author sat surrounded by historical sources and simply pieced them together to write a book rather than creating something new. I appreciate that this is what you get sometimes when reading history, but still...
