I'm a sucker for books about misanthropes, drunks, fuck-ups, and characters grinding against the tired American Dream...so this book is, admittedly, right up my alley. Grochalski, however, does his book a tremendous service by avoiding the kinds of deeply melodramatic pitfalls that sometimes comes with this kind of book, resists taking quick and easy ways out, and the narrative is all the more believable for it. 21st century America sucks for all of us, even the Kardashians, but most people have their heads too far up their butts to realize it. Grochalski does not have his head up his butt and neither does his protagonist, which is why his protagonist drinks and often. I am toasting this book right now with a frozen margarita. Salud.

The Librarian is the debut novel of Brooklyn based poet/writer John Grochalski, published by Six Gallery Press back in December 2013. As usual, I am late to the party. Not late to the party in a fashionable kind of way, more like in a kicking yourself because it was a fucking great party and you wished you'd been there from the start kind of way.
