This is a true story about the swans in Sun Valley, Idaho. The author was sitting near the pond at the lodge and saw the swans "turn in" for the night. Eccles was amazed at how the swan "parents" got ready for bed and how the littlest cygnet followed--while two larger cygnets played around in the water until the last moment. Thus, the story related in this book was born.

This book was okay, but if I had read it as a child I would not have liked it. There were not very many pictures, and the ones that were there were overwhelmed with full pages of text and big words like "obstreperous." The pictures lacked much color. I understand that swans are white, but the backgrounds could have been more colorful to make them stand out. The climax of the book—when one of the cygnets gets eaten by a fox—is barely discussed and no one seems to really care that it happened. I ...more
Okay, I'll start with the positive. The illustrations in this book were beautiful! I really enjoyed looking at them. But for me, that is where the positives end. Yes the illustrations were beautiful, but they were so tiny and there were so few of them that this "picture book" came off as excessively wordy. Also, the writing was terribly boring and horribly depressing. I would have a hard time reading this to a child because even I felt really down after reading this. If the book was lightened up ...more
