Number eleven in the pilgrimage series. The end is almost in sight! Miriam makes a decision at the end of this novel to leave London and move to the country; cutting many ties and leaving her job. As ever the plot is not the main thing and drifts along as usual.
Amabel plays an important role. It is easy to place the novel historically as it is the height of the suffragette protests and Amabel gets herself arrested and jailed. The relationship between Amabel and Miriam is close. Interestingly Mi

The last chapter in Dorothy Richardson’s Pilgrimage – the tenth of thirteen – ended at a point when Miriam Henderson had been given the life and space, during a visit to the country, to come to understand herself and her situation a little more than she had before, and to made some decisions about what she might do next in life. That made her happier and more purposeful than she had been for quite some time.

This next chapter – the last to be published as a single volume – finds her back in Londo

Richardson was born in Abingdon in 1873. Her family moved to Worthing, West Sussex in 1880 and then Putney, London in 1883. At seventeen, because of her father's financial difficulties she went to work as a governess and teacher, first in 1891 for six months at a finishing school in Germany.
