Just Friends
by
Norma Klein
Everyone thinks of Isabel and Stuart as "just friends." So it's no big deal when their pals Ketti, Lois and Andria decide that Smart will be Ketti's next "love" target.
No one suspects the truth: that Iz has always thought of Stuart as hers, and that it's just a matter of time before they fall in love and live happily ever after. As far as Iz is concerned they've been engag...more

I read this book in high school (probably 1995-97) after the children's librarian told me a woman had been very upset that her daughter had been allowed to check the book out. Mrs. Eaton asked if I would read it and see if it was appropriate for teens. It was this book that brought about the move of the YA books from the children's room to a corner of the adult room (upstairs). Before this point, I'm not even sure the YA books were marked any differently from the children's books.

I was definitely too young to read this book when I read it. I can't even remember how I came to own it, but I'm pretty sure I hid it from my mom. I remember Norma Klein being really edgy back in the day because the books had actual sex in them. This one is no exception. Definitely an eye-opener. I want to say I was in 7th grade when I read this but in reality it was probably 6th.

This was Norma Klein's last book, and I vividly remember when I read this book, getting to that last page and seeing on the author bio that she had died upset me very much. I believe it wasn't 100% finished (the writing was obviously done but not the production process) as I caught 2 copyediting inconsistencies that I've never seen in other of her books. This book I identified with more than all her others. It was the first one where the main female character had girlfriends. Not just one (or so...more
