This book is an easy read and felt short to me. Clearly, Jack accomplished a lot in his career. But after reading the book, it is not clear (to me) how he did it.

He worked hard, demanded excellence, fired the bottom 10% each year, and came up with new initiatives every few years.

The most valuable part of the book, in my opinion, was a description of GE's 4 Es rating system.
E: Energy
E: Energize (the people around you)
E: Edge - ability to make a decision.
E: Execution

Book Review: Jack Straight from the Gut

Jack Welch led General Electric for over 20 years. He was arguably one of the best CEOs in the country at that time. After literally blowing the roof off one of the factories, he went on to lead the company through some very profitable years (pp. 27-36).

Great autobiography of Jack's rise through GE, very open and frank, as well as insightful about what it's taken for him to succeed.

Biggest learnings are around:
- people. That's key. Honest dialog about performance and unrelenting search for the best
- ambition. Always looking for the next opportunity and always selling himself as the best person for each new role
- deep dives. Not always, but often, drilling down deep into key areas and doing whatever it takes to understand them and add value

The book will be quite inspiring for all those who are very passionate and very ambitious about their career and are too eager to bring in a change in the organization for good.

This book will take you through the tough times faced by WELCH @ GE and how boldly he managed to overcome these and brought a drastic change to the organization after he was promoted to higher position.

It had some good nuggets about corporate america...and how he ran GE. It's an autobiography, but 98% about his work at GE, so sometimes it got sloooow. And over my head when they talk about stock options and deals. And Six Sigma. A glossary in the back would have been helpful.

Although I liked this book, I also found it unsettling.
It is indisputable that Mr. Welch achieved phenomenal success as a businessman.
But throughout the book, I kept wondering "Where is his family?" "What about his faith?"
Mr. Welch and those around him apparently lived and breathed business 24/7 for most of their lives and achieved what they believe to be "success." While that life certainly doesn't appeal to me, I guess I'm glad that there are people who are willing to work that hard to create...more

This book blurs the line between an autobiography, a corporate history book, and a management instructional; and it does it well. This has been one of the most engaging books on the subject matter, taking a relatively benign subject (how a hard working nobody become a CEO and superstar of an appliance and technology company), and makes it personable.

I will always remember my purchase of this book. It was made available on Amazon.com on September 11, 2001. I had just completed my order when I saw the news flash about a plane crashing into the World Trade Center in New York.

The book is a very honest account of Jack's philosophy and a pretty detailed description of every event that happened in his career with his rise to the top of GE. It's a pretty good book for an insight in understanding Jack Welch. I believe other authors speak highly of him, as one of the more humble CEO who looks inward when things go wrong, and outward when things are great.
His philosophies and principles may not be popular with some, but he is arguably one of the best leaders around.

An excellent and candid insight into the billion dollar company and the CEO who played a huge part in it. For those who are looking for management insight to his secrets they may be disappointed because its really just a general overview.

His methods confirm my prejudices about his management style, for example, he uses an A B C D type of ranking. I highly doubt i would love to work under him, but it it is enlightening to see how he justifies his style as good and human.

I read this because I heard he was a legendary executive. It was an eye opening experience into the ultra competitive world of GE. I was surprised to learn Welch has a PhD (engineering) and accidentally blew up a factory early in his career.

I read this book because Jack Welch mentored my parent company's CEO. If you've ever wondered what "boundaryless" means, this book sort of explains it. Jack is entirely too long. Welch makes the mistake of trying to give a narrative of his entire career instead of organizing the book around a central theme and cutting the fluff. It’s the sections dealing specifically with his managerial successes at GE. None of the methods he applied at GE were groundbreaking. But there is something to seeing them in action. GE stock paid for much of my college education, so I owe Jack a nod of appreciation for building such a powerhouse corporation that was able to keep stock values growing when other companies were struggling.

The book provides a nice overview of the history of GE under Jack Welch, including the policies and deals he set up. While it does touch on policy specifics, it's much more of a memoir than a how-to manual.

Interesting read, but if I didn't have a history with GE, I probably wouldn't have made...more
