Glamour, Gidgets, and the Girl Next Door: Television's Iconic Women from the 50's, 60's, and 70's by Herbie J. Pilato is a 2014 Taylor Trade Publishing release. I was provided a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

If you are a pop culture enthusiast or someone you know is, then you will not want to pass up this wonderful, fully illustrated book. I love pop culture so this one appealed to me instantly. This hardcover edition is not as large as many “coffee table” books in length

This book had a few pages dedicated to those women who were famous during these time periods. The author freely admitted in the introduction that he did not interview each (those still with us) but got his information from various public sources, so really, no new material.

I mostly thumbed through and read some of the entries which were OK. The author only included one picture per star and each had 2-3 pages so this really was a very condensed version of their famous lives.

Again I am transported to the days of childhood with such favorite characters as Ann Marie (That Girl), Honey West (Honey West) Marcia Brady (The Brady Bunch and a slew of TV women from the 1960's to 1970's! Divided into sections this is a delight!!!!!!!

Pilato (The Essential Elizabeth Montgomery) highlights 45 female television stars from the 1950s through the 1970s, focusing on the archetypal and nubile characters they portrayed. Dividing the actresses into six sections—from Gilligan's Island, Tina Louise (Ginger) is a "Liberated Soul" while Dawn Wells (Mary Ann) is a "Country Girl"—Pilato provides a three- to five-page overview of each actress's life, characters, and TV productions, and closes with a summary of iconic facts. It's impossible ...more

Brought back some memories of my favorite childhood shows, but ultimately the book was, by the author's own admission, just a compilation of factoids from wickipedia and biography.com -- very little style to the writing, and no new or first-hand information. I would love to have read some behind-the-scenes gossip about the shows and the co-stars, but there wasn't much background on the actresses or their lives, and still less about what became of them after their shows were over (except their ...more
