A good look at China when it was on the verge of moving from a long-time Communist state to the current economic powerhouse. Already, the book's writers noted the changes in attitudes concerning state-ruled communes. Many common people were starting to recognize the possibilities of a "freer" market. The cultural details were interesting and I wonder how much of that has survived the changes in the last 30 years. Photos are the usual excellent National Geographic quality.

Got this book for fifty cents at the thrift store yesterday. I'm enjoying reading the captions for all the photos. Chapters are set up by areas of the country and begin with 6-8 pages of text followed by many, many photographs and their captions.

Browsed this coffee table book off and on for months. National Geographic reportage and imagery at its best. Especially fascinating since it was made just as Reformation and Opening was starting. Glimpses of a China already lost to the past.

National Geographics seems to have turned a couple photographers loose in the newly open China and told them to take lots of pictures and fast, then rushed this to print.

i enjoyed this book for the opportunity to armchair travel. This book was published in 1982 and the text is likely outdated.
