Fly Guy #4: There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Fly Guy (Fly Guy #4)
by
Tedd Arnold
The fourth book in a humorous, easy-to-read series about a boy and his pet fly! Each book in the series has a fun foil cover!
Buzz is visiting Grandma, and Fly Guy comes along for the ride. Oops! Grandma swallows Fly Guy, then a spider, then a bird, then a cat, then a dog. . . .
She's about to swallow a horse, when Fly Guy shouts: "BUZZZ!" Buzz is starting to worry, but ther...more

There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Fly Guy is a decent read for Preschoolers to 2nd graders. The repetitive text is great for those learning to read, but I find that the book lacks creativity. It's almost exactly like the old folk tale/song it's based off of. Buzz visits his grandmother with his pet fly, Fly Guy. Buzz's grandmother inadvertently swallows Fly Guy which leads to a chain of swallowing various animals. The plot is silly and the young ones will laugh at it. The illustrations really...more
Buzz visits his grandma with Fly Guy and the unthinkable happens - Grandma swallows Fly Guy. A take off of the original there was an old lady who swallowed a fly. Read this for a kindergarten visit to the library for SRP, the kids loved it. I followed this up with an action rhyme using:
Fly Guy, Fly Guy-clap, clap, clap
Fly Guy, Fly Guy-tap, tap, tap
Fly Guy, Fly Guy-snap, snap, snap
Fly Guy, Fly Guy-flap, flap, flap
Fly Guy, Fly Guy-up and down
Fly Guy, Fly Guy-turn around
Fly Guy, Fly Guy-sit right d...more

The latest installment in Tedd Arnold’s Fly Guy series starts with Buzz and his pet fly, Fly Guy, going out to visit Buzz’s grandmother. Just as Buzz is introducing his pet to Grandma, Fly Guy gets knocked down Grandma’s throat. As Fly Guy checks out his new surroundings, flying past an apple core and other half digested food, Grandma starts to swallow other animals. Hilarity ensues as familiar animals start to follow down Grandma’s throat and start to mak...more

3 1/2 stars. The fun part of this book is experiencing the "There Was an Old Lady..." song from the fly's perspective. It is also fun to sing the words of the book to the familiar song. (Assuming, of course, that your preschooler does not get upset with you for not "reading" it.) It does help to have read the original Hi! Fly Guy, but not required to enjoy this book.

Another early reader book made better by the young learner reading it to me. Even as a kid I was too logical for the Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly bit (I couldn't tolerate Amelia Bedelia either), but today I appreciated how the rhythm encouraged fluency with the student.
All that said, Tedd Arnold's Fly Guy series is very popular in my first grade cooperating classroom. The fiction books are entertaining for the kids and provide practice with familiar words.

Was expecting this to be cute and clever. It was cute as far as you may think of Fly Guy as being a cute cartoon, and clever only in the sense that it borrowed almost entirely from the original old lady fly swallower, but really offered nothing to make it uniquely Fly Guy's own. Our 5 year old flipped through it in triple-time as if to say, "Seen It"!
I really enjoyed reading this book. I can see that many of my students who still need repetitive text would enjoy reading this book. It is a fun story and I can see many boys liking it too. It is set up as a chapter book, but I would not consider it a chapter book really. Keep this one in mind for your struggling readers who need a little motivation.
The Fly Guy books are hits with my students, so I figured I better read one to see what the hype is all about! Very cute story about a grandma who swallows her grandson's pet fly and a lot of other animals until she gets to the horse, of course! I read this to my 4K class and they were rolling on the floor with laughter, so it was a hit!
Buzz went to visit his grandma, who promptly swallowed Buzz's new pet fly aptly named Fly Guy. Grandma was mortified...so she swallowed a spider to catch the fly, and swallowed a bird to catch the spider. You get the idea. Good thing it all ends up with a happy ending.

I really liked this story because I've read may of the "THERE WAS AN OLD WOMAN WHO SWALLOWED A..." Books. I like how the author banks off of this series and incorporates his character as the fly in the very first story of the series. And this book could be used to talk about sequencing and predictions.
I think it's really neat how this is a spin off story of the "There was an Old Lady" books. This is a simple book for beginning readers. It's cute, and I'm sure young readers would enjoy this book! Also, this book is so wild. The author used his crazy imagination to write this one.
This book is like the classic book There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly with a twist. I like getting to read the story from the flies perspective.
Buzz has a pet fly. When Buzz went to go visit his Grandma she accidentally swallowed him. So in order to get the fly, she swallowed a whole bunch of other animals. Finally the fly yelled buzz and they all fell out of the grandma's belly. All was well.
This is a twist on the original story There Was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly. Buzz takes Fly Guy to meet his grandmother but she accidentally swallows him. I think children will enjoy this book especially if they are familiar with the original story.

Readers of all ages, especially those with adventurous senses of humor.
I love this whole series. The art work is great and the sense of humor is also rich. My favorite in the series is "Fly Guy vs. the Flyswatter." Kudos to Mr. Arnold for a terrific, simple, fun achievement on which he's vamping like a champ.

This is a fun twist on the classic ditty about the little old lady who swallowed a fly. I remember learining it in Kindergarten and thinking that it was hilarious. This story has a much happier ending, though!
This book did not have a very good ending; however, I laughed. Students would love hearing about all the grandma swallowed and would love thinking about what would come next to catch the previous animal.
Not the best book in the world. It's funny how it goes with the there was an old lady who swallowed, stories, but it was too quick and easy to read for almost any level. The pictures are cute though.
Yes, it's a take off of "There was an old lady who..." story, but Tedd Arnold has a great Fly Guy twist to this story. My son and I enjoyed reading this book together, and highly recommend it.
This is another story to add to the Fly Guy series. I think kids would enjoy reading this because they would find it funny and the text is very basic for beginning readers.

Kids love the books in this series. This would be a great story for a compare and contrast and sequencing. Other than that, it is a silly book that engages some kids.

Tedd grew up with three brothers. His family lived on a farm in Pennsylvania for several years then returned to Elmira until Tedd was ten years old. His father's work then required that they move to Gainesville, Florida. There, Tedd's first art lessons in an abandoned dentist's office over the Happy Hour pool hall eventually led to a fine arts degree from the University of Florida.
